Christmas carols in shopping malls and pine trees along the side of

the road may make you smile with antici-pation and excitement – or run a mile! For most it is a stressful time as you need to be on your best behaviour with family and sometimes even pretend that you are not who you are at all – if you know what I mean. All I want to do for lunch on Christ-mas day is explore delicious tastes of fresh fruit and vegetables with sensational spic-es and herbs, but what I will end up doing is making a variety of meat dishes under duress as I am the only vegetarian at the table! I don’t do puddings and I don’t really drink. How cheerful does that sound!

Diffi cult relatives we've managed to keep at arm’s length, and spending more than we can realistically afford will require of us to be honest with ourselves and with oth-ers to stop this annual show of pretence. And don’t you think it’s time?

And I would like to ban television for a few days, so that people get off the couches

and think about other ways to amuse themselves. I’m going to take out the board games, craft box and crayons and everyone can help make decorations for the tree! My children will play the piano and the guests will pay me not to sing! We will play music and dance, and really BE together.

In the busy-ness of holidays and prepara-tions for Christmas and New Year, it's easy to lose yourself. If you're feeling uptight, overwhelmed by people and noise, or just tired, take a few minutes to lie down some-where you'll be undisturbed, and breathe deeply. Take a long, deep bath, listen to music, or take a short walk by yourself or with someone who'll be happy to share your thoughts. Just 10 to 15 minutes doing what you need for yourself can break the tension cycle.

Plan your holiday, even if you are receiving guests in your home, bearing in mind that you'll be out of your usual routine and re-quired to do things like cook and entertain many more people than usual. Make lists

HIJKE YOGHURT

I am a regular at Vernuft Deli (The Woodmill, Stellenbosch) where Hester Hoogendijk sells one of the best yoghurts I have ever tasted.

The need for natural healthy food without unnecessary additives resulted in the founding of Hijke Yoghurt 14 years ago when Hester started making her yoghurt by hanging cultured milk in cloth to drain the whey.

Today, the manufacturing and cleaning processes are con-trolled from a touchscreen computer! Yoghurt produced by Hijke has no additives, however, the cloth separation is replaced by computer-controlled extraction of the water from the milk prior to incubation.

Plain Hijke yoghurt contains no carbohydrates, no sugar and no thickeners. All the nutrients are concentrated be-cause the yield from 100 litres of milk is 50 litres of yo-ghurt. The low fat yoghurt (fat content is between 2 and 3%) is available at various retail outlets and there is also a double thick natural yoghurt which is only available at Vernuft Deli.

Hijke yoghurt is especially suita-ble for diabetics, persons on zero carbohydrates, and also children, because the nutrients are highly concentrated.

Hijke fruit yoghurt contains 5,7% pro-tein and the fruit concentrate is pro-duced to meet Hijke requirements. I say yum! and double yum!! to the dou-ble thick.

that are reasonable and easy to achieve, and build in fl exibility – the best-laid plans can change and you need to be able to adapt. Limit the number of large family gatherings if you fi nd them stressful. Set a few ground rules that are non-negotiable, and then let go of those that are less im-portant.

See page 80 for the article on travelling tips. I’ve put together tips and ideas that could keep you healthy (if not the other side of sane) on your holiday here or away.

Most importantly, share with those who may not be blessed with the gifts you have. And share your family by inviting someone who is alone to spend the day with you. Remind yourself what it means to give, and to be grateful for what you have. Now that’s a Christmas I look forward to!

So many people all over the world have been touched by the work of Dr Masaru Emoto, Chairman of Non-Profi t Organization Emoto Peace Project. He became a Doctor of Alter-native Medicine in 1992.

The work of Dr Emoto revealed that water re-tains memory. He showed that when a snow-fl ake is photographed, defrosted and frozen again, it remembers its crystaline structure, as the subsequent photograph of it will show. And no two snowfl akes have the same crysta-line structure. Ice crystals give us information about the state of the water. Wow! Dr Emoto set out to dertermine if water crystals looked different under different circumstances. And he establised, through his photographs, that depending on its origin (tap water or water from a natural spring) the crystals would take on a completely different shape.

Water reacts to the ‘experiences’ it goes through during its journey and stores that in-formation. Water from a spring, for example, formed beautiful regular hexagons under observation, while water from a dam hardly ever achieved a complete crystal. Water from

a chloride-ridden tap gave Emoto’s experi-ments the most shocking results. He wrote in his book, The Healing Power of Water: ‘It can be really painful to see water that has been mistreated in such a way if you know what marvellous crystals natural water can form…’ He believed that these changes could be eliminated by exposing water to ultraviolet light or certain electromagnetic waves.

After studying the variation in water crystals from samples taken from different locations around the world, Emoto decided to study what would happen to the formation of ice crystals from distilled water after the liquid was exposed to music, then showing letters and pictures to water and praying to water. Beautiful crystals were observed after giv-ing good words and beautiful images; play-ing good music and offering pure prayer to water. On the other hand, disfi gured crystals were observed in the opposite situation. Dr Emoto’s results were published as photograph book collections such as Messages from Wa-ter, Water Knows the Answer, Love Thyself and The Healing Power of Water. For example the words ‘thank you’ and ‘you fool’ were writ-

bias is prevented or minimised. A double blind procedure in which a photographer would not know what water sample he or she was pho-tographing would have made his claims con-siderably more credible. Having said that, his claims have neither been substantiated nor disproved by research scientists.

‘The common language that the people of the world have been seeking is found in water crystals. Water speaks for what is in our mind. Water awakens the subconscious memory in each person.… I now know why water is indis-pensable to the phenomenon of life, and why alternative therapies exist and why they’re ef-fective. Water helped me understand religion and prayer and gave me a clue to understand-ing the nature of energy. It helped me under-stand the relationship between humanity and the cosmos. It gave me a clue to help me un-derstand what dimentionality is. I could come one step closer to understanding the eternal theme of humanity that asks where we come from, why we are here, and what happens when we die.’ From his book Love Thyself. Love Thyself

ten in various languages on paper and placed under the distilled water samples, and his published photos show that samples that had been exposed to the words ‘thank you’ exhib-ited beautiful crystals, while samples that had been exposed to the words ‘you fool’ would not form crystals at all.

‘… the photograph of crystals is neither sci-ence nor religion. I hope it is enjoyed as a new type of art. Nevertheless, the world it shows is truth, and there is no doubt that many mes-sages essential to our lives are hidden in it.’ Masaru Emoto

It is just incredible to see how water mimics the images and sounds it is given. For ex-ample, Emoto had the shape of a heart on a water bottle. Then a crystaline structure of the water showed a heart shape! Mandala* pictures placed under a water bottle, result-ed in the structure of the water crystal being mandala-like. Water also responds to sound and, for me, the most breathtaking crystalline structure formed was when ‘Ave Maria’ was sung by Susan Osborn. Another soul stirring image is the structure of water after an au-diotape of the Koran was played, sung in the traditional manner – deeply and richly without musical instrument accompaniment.

Emoto on water: ‘Since the beginning of time, it has been seen as the symbol of the soul and regarded as the prime substance of the universe.’

In conclusion, the scientifi c community has critisised Dr Emoto, saying that his procedure for photographing crystals has no controlled means of ensuring that the experimenter’s

For the past couple of months I’ve been researching the Banting debate

quite extensively and I’ve found many, many untruths, inconsistencies, poor science, and unsubstantiated claims with regard to this fad.

Professor Tim Noakes, author of The Real Meal Revolution (RMR), was pre-diabetic in 2012, diabetic in 2013 and is still diabetic in 2014. Therefore, his diet has not reversed his own diabetes, even though this is the reason he changed his diet.

A major problem with ‘Banting’, though, is that there is no nation, culture or group of people who have eaten Low Carb/High Fat and who have lived long and healthy lives. There is zero evidence to substantiate any claim of healthy longevity on this diet. Neither Professor Noakes nor co-author Sally-Ann Creed can provide proof of safety.

Furthermore, Professor Noakes encourages people to eat hormone/antibiotic laden meat over any carbohydrate (as stated in the May/June 2013 edition of Health Intelligence). This is yet another example of these fanatical ‘low carbers’ putting all foods that contain carbohy-drates in the same category. The unsuspect-ing general public is being deceived on a huge

scale about carbohydrates. After reading the RMR, instead of being scared of eating fat they are now scared of eating ALL carbohydrates! It’s totally ridiculous!

People who follow the Banting diet are get-ting short-term benefi ts merely because they are cutting out refi ned foods. Any diet will do that. One has to look at the overall picture of long-term health. Weight loss does not equal health gain.

People are going ‘Banting’ without appreciat-ing the dangers of this type of diet and un-derstanding the backgrounds of the people who are advising them. People need to make informed decisions, but there is not enough information upon which to base their deci-sions. S.K.

LOYAL READERI love your magazine! I have been a subscriber for about

four years now. Apart from the very in-formative articles, the photographs and layout are always fresh and original. I do not know how you manage to come up with such magnifi cent covers all the time. I am also involved with maga-zines and know what goes into it and how quickly those deadlines can creep up on you.

Each issue always has at least one ar-ticle that feels like it was written espe-cially for me – you are really working your health magic! Keep up the good work! E.A.

THE EDITOR REPLIES: Thank you for your kind words. I am delighted you reap so many ben-efi ts from our publication. And hearing from our readers is a great motivator for us!

Thank you for a wonderful magazine which I have been

reading for years. Your magazine has grown from strength to strength while I, as a pharmacist, have noticed that many pharmacy magazines have closed. Could you do an article on acupressure? There is a great need for it as tablets can't unblock pres-sure points and meridians. Fenugreek is another underused herb – it has so many uses. Could you explore natural treatment for drug addiction as it does not make sense to go from tik to Sabu-trex! And then I came across a very interesting application for the Comra device that you advertise. Dr Kondrot, President of the board of the Arizona Homeopathic & Integrative Medical Association (AHIMA) uses it to restore lost vision and improve health. Keep up the good work! R.C.

THE EDITOR REPLIES: Your request for an article on acupressure has been heard. We look forward to publishing questions and answers on acupuncture in our next issue.

I am sure you will fi nd that as interesting as acupressure and yes, you make a very good point – there is no drug that unblocks a me-ridian or pressure point. Food for thought. I will be happy to write on fenugreek. We have just published an article on addiction, please see issue 113 page 104 ‘Addiction – steps to recovery’. Dr Kondrot uses the Cold Laser which uses a red near infrared light, ultrasound and syntonic light to treat eye disease. On his website, he refers to sev-eral studies that have shown that the cold laser treatment over the closed eyelid can reverse damage from macular degeneration and glaucoma. Thank you for publishing the very interesting article on colloidal silver

in your November issue. Colloidal silver was used extensively as a natural antibi-otic until the 1940s when the advent of ‘modern' antibiotics became popular. Did you know that one of the most important medical roles for colloidal silver is its abil-ity to destroy deadly pathogens like me-thicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the flesh-eating super bug?! The MRSA cure was discovered during research in the 1970s at Syracuse University. Dr Robert O. Becker’s research has been all but discredited by the FDA who helped to downplay his findings. Funding for con-tinued research dried up in 1980, forcing poor Becker to close his lab and stop his research.

which revealed exactly what its name sug-gests, was buried and kept secret for years. In essence, investigators determined that simple silver solutions neutralise viruses like Arenavirus and Filovirus, both of which are related to Ebola!

According to the Natural Solutions Founda-tion (NSF), efforts to ship nanosilver into Sierra Leone now during the Ebola out-break, have thus far failed. The organisa-tion has been trying to deliver a shipment of 200 bottles of nanosilver and tubes of nanosilver gel, to no avail. F.A.

My mother suffers from very pain-ful varicose veins. What causes

this condition and how can she find relief? M.G.

THE EDITOR REPLIES: I am sorry to hear that your mother is suffering from this extremely uncom-fortable condition which affects one in two peo-ple over the age of 50.

To put it simply varicose veins are bulging, twisted, widened veins with valves that are not performing properly. The engorged veins which show through the skin are blue in colour because they are hold-ing de-oxygenated blood which needs to get to the heart.

Apart from advancing age, risk factors for varicose veins include a genetic predisposition, extended periods of standing or sitting and obesity. Preg-nancy, especially multiple pregnancies, plays a part.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common complication of varicose veins and can produce symptoms such as oedema, changes in the ap-pearance of the skin and ulcers. CVI and varicose veins are classified under the term ‘chronic venous disorders’.

Chronic venous disorders can occur when the one-way valves in veins which ensure that blood is kept flowing in the right direction towards the heart become faulty. When this happens there is ‘reflux’ and blood pools in the vein causing swelling, con-gestion, heaviness and pain.

Conventional medical intervention for these types of disorders may require the surgical removal of the malfunctioning vein/s. This operation is done under anaesthetic and does not always come with a 100% guarantee of success.

Other surgical procedures are less invasive. Am-bulatory phlebectomy removes veins through

small incisions in the skin. With endovenous laser therapy (performed under local anaesthetic) a la-ser placed into the vein inflicts thermal damage to the lining of the vein which then collapses and seals.

There are a variety of natural treatments for ve-nous disorders.

Homeopathic treatments such as Pulsatilla, Calc fluor and Calc carb are effective, but consult your homeopath first.

Aromatherapy treatment with essential oils en-courages circulation, soothes irritation and re-lieves pain and congestion. Applications include cold massage, cold compressing, gels and baths.

When applied as poultices, spices such as black pepper, cayenne pepper, cardamom, ginger, cin-namon and clove bud dilate capillaries and en-courage blood flow.

Herbal remedies such as horse chestnut and red vine leaf extract have been shown to strengthen veins. In a study carried out on a large patient sample daily doses of 360 mg and 720 mg of red vine leaf extract appeared safe and effective, reducing lower led oedema and circumference while improving key CVI-related symptoms.¹

Horse chestnut seed extract has been shown to reduce some of the symptoms of poor blood cir-culation including varicose veins, pain, oedema and itching.²

As always, if possible, prevention is always bet-ter than cure so look after your veins: Exercise regularly; avoid restrictive clothing such as tight socks, stockings, panties etc,; don’t sit with crossed legs; don’t stand or sit for too long; avoid constipation by eating plenty of high-fibre foods and fruit and veg; don’t smoke; and maintain your ideal body weight.

DECEMBER 2014 | 047

Why has the ADHD epidemic — now fi rmly established in the United States — almost completely passed

over children in France? Is ADHD a biolog-ical-neurological disorder? Surprisingly, the answer to this question depends on whether you live in France or in the United States. In the United States, child psychiatrists consider ADHD to be a biological disorder with biolog-ical causes. The preferred treatment is also biological – psycho stimulant medications such as Ritalin.

French child psychiatrists, on the other hand, view ADHD as a medical condition that has psychosocial and situational causes. Instead of treating children's focussing and behav-ioural problems with drugs, French doctors prefer to look for the underlying issue that is causing the child distress — not in the child's brain but in the child's social context. They then choose to treat the underlying social context problem with psychotherapy or fam-ily counselling. This is a very different way of seeing things from the American tendency to attribute all symptoms to a biological dys-function such as a chemical imbalance in the child's brain.

French children don't need medications to control their behaviour.

CONTEXTUAL CAUSESFrench child psychiatrists don't use the same system of classifi cation of childhood emo-tional problems as American psychiatrists. They do not use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM. Accord-ing to sociologist Manuel Vallée, the French Federation of Psychiatry developed an alter-native classifi cation system as a resistance to the infl uence of the DSM. This alternative* was fi rst released in 1983, and updated in 1988 and 2000. The focus is on identifying and addressing the underlying psychosocial causes of children's symptoms, not on fi nd-ing the best pharmacological bandaids with which to mask symptoms.

ADHD or normal behaviour? To the extent that French clinicians are suc-cessful at fi nding and repairing what has gone awry in the child's social context, fewer chil-dren qualify for the ADHD diagnosis. Moreo-ver, the defi nition of ADHD is not as broad as in the American system, which, in my view, tends to ‘pathologise’ much of what is normal childhood behaviour. The DSM specifi cally does not consider underlying causes. It thus leads clinicians to give the ADHD diagnosis to a much larger number of symptomatic chil-dren, while also encouraging them to treat those children with pharmaceuticals.

increases your chance for

PTIMUM NUTRITI N

All pregnant women know how important it is to eat a healthy diet in order to produce a healthy baby. What most moms-to-be don’t know, however, is that a healthy diet during pregnancy assists in optimising the potential for a natural and intervention-free birth.

Dr Gowri Motha, a famous obste-trician, has developed a special

programme to help women through their pregnancies. This programme equips them with the potential for a natural birth. In her wonderful book, Gentle Birth Method, she describes that working as an obstetrician in the UK she came to the conclusion that many births needing intervention were partly due to an obstruction in the pelvis caused by oedema (water retention) and weight gain.

This coupled with unfi t, unprepared mothers and a pre-conceived fear of pain greatly lim-ited any chance of gentle, natural childbirth. A part of her programme is nutritional advice to help women avoid this ‘pelvic oedema’ and to generally become healthier in their pregnancies.

The healthier and fi tter you are during preg-nancy the greater your chances are for a natu-ral birth. In the following nutritional advice I

1. Lip check. In our efforts to protect ourselves from the ravages of the sun, our lips often get overlooked – and the fact that so many lipsticks and balms still don’t contain sun protection doesn’t make things any easier.

Ultraviolet light can be damaging to lips, which are thin to begin with and lack the ability to produce melanin, the tanning pigment that protects skin. So get in the habit of packing a natural lip balm that also offers sun protec-tion.

2. The sunless tan. For a sun-kissed look with-out sun damage, try a self-tanning product which safely darken your skin into a believable tan. I love Tanasia, Xen Tan and TanOrganic (a new organic self-tanning product). I also love Caribbean Tan – a sunscreen range that protects your skin while it bronzes it.

3. Shield your eyes. Invest in good sun-glasses. Without consistent protection from the sun, your eyes are vulnerable to corneal

damage and cataracts. Cheap over-the-coun-ter sunglasses are unlikely to give you the pro-tection you’re looking for. Ask for UV coating for prescription eyewear, too – for clear as well as for tinted lenses. And think of as many ex-cuses as possible to wear a broad-brimmed hat.

4. Summer can be hell on skin and hair. Make sure you use a good moisturiser such as Busby’s Liquid Gold for hands and body, Soy Lite’s Luxury Beauty Oil with organic Baobab and Marula oil, Cream Mask from Esse and Dr Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream. Also try Mis-sissippi Mud Pie, face and body mask from Hey Gorgeous, 100% natural and leaves skin glowing and radiant.

Chlorine, salt water, wind, and sun – you can’t fi nd a worse combination, especially if you colour your hair. To help seal your strands against at least some of the damage, choose an SPF-enriched shampoo and conditioner to protect your hair the same way you do your

Adaptogenic herbs counteract the impact of stress upon the body

caused by physical exertion, chemical or pathogenic exposure, emotional trauma and electromagnetic stress.

The following recommendations are based on traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic me-dicinal wisdom that is thousands of years old. I include the top adaptogenic herbs on the planet because of their time-proven ability to remove the causes of ageing and to create incredible, abundant health.

Angelica root (dong quai) Commonly known as a primary yin jing ‘fe-male’ herb in Chinese medicine, angelica root carries analgesic, anti-infl ammatory, anti-spasmodic, aphrodisiac, blood tonifying, and sedative effects. As a hormone regulator, an-

gelica root is a valuable botanical for keeping the immune system operating optimally and providing the body with the energy it needs to carry out detoxifi cation. Dong quai inhibits estradiol synthesis (lowers age-related bad oestrogen).

Warning: Angelica root is fairly toxic when fresh; it must be dried thoroughly before use. When using angelica root, you may be more susceptible to sunburn. Angelica root should not be used by people with diabe-tes, nor should it be used in large doses by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Restore the body and the soul with Watsu – a water therapy that brings healing on many levels.

Harold Dull, the developer of Watsu (an advanced form of Water Shiat-

su) and also the President of the Worldwide Aquatic Body Association (WABA), says this form of aquatic therapy evolved into what many considered as the most profound de-velopment of bodywork in our time.1

WHAT IS IT?This still sounds very foggy, so let me embroi-der on the topic. Watsu is a specialised form of Aqua Therapy where the receiver is passive and fl oated in thermoneutral water which is at 33 to 34oC. That means that the water is at a temperature that does not let the body temperature increase or decrease. The only support the practitioner offers the receiver is an arm under the neck or a hand under the head to gently move the body in rhythmical, graceful and fl uid movements.

WHAT DOES IT DO?Watsu promotes a deep state of relaxation and taps into the central nervous system where it seeks to balance the sympathetic nervous system (that is our fi ght, fl ight or freeze response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (that is where all the ‘re’s’ in our bodies happen of which re-lax, re-store, re-generate, re-juvenate, re-gain and re-create are only a few). It reminds the body how to self-heal2 and also enhances the immune sys-tem response.3

HOW DOES IT DO IT?‘How on earth is all of this done?’, you might ask. Let’s add some more detail. The warm water relaxes the muscles and because the body fl oats, our joints – and especially our spines – can be mobilised in a very unique way. Good relaxation of muscles is promoted

‘Who else is the enemy of Nature but he who mistakes himself for more intelligent than Nature, though it is the highest school for all of us?’ Paracelsus (1493 – 1541)

My childhood memories are domi-nated by images of myself alone

in nature: comfortable with the plants and trees – more so than with people, school and family – this was ‘home’.

As I got a bit older, I ventured alone into wilder places, the marshlands not far from our home along the coast of Northwest England, where I got to know the birds, the plants that dominated the vast expanse of human-less land, the water holes and the insects and water creatures that there aboded. As I explored the outer world, an inner wildness was starting to develop that would carve the way of my life, a calling that I cannot describe but that came from deep inside my belly.

Without knowing it I learned to tune into each member of the plant world that lived nearby and recognise their ‘feel’ – the way they related to me and me to them. I ma-noeuvred myself on earth, not by remem-bering place names, street maps or road systems but by knowing what grew where and how they made me feel.

It seemed natural to become a herbalist, but one of the questions that seemed to bother me more than other fellow herb-alists when I was training and since was: ‘What is it to know a plant? ’ I couldn’t be-lieve that the scientifi c view of reducing a plant uniquely to its chemical constitu-ents would be enough to be an effective herbalist. I read many books on plant
