Most women cringe when they hear words likePMS, hot lash, or night-sweat. These seem-ingly unavoidable conditions plague most women inAmerica, some to the point o complete debilitation.

But what i it didnt have to be that way? I was veryamazed to learn that women in un-industrializedcountries rarely ace the supposedly inevitablesymptoms commonly associated with PMS and Meno-pause. In act, or most o these women, the transitionthrough the change o li e is pretty much seamless.

When I irst began researching natural progester-one supplementation, I was quite in the dark.I was still years rom experiencing menopause my-sel , and really hadnt spoken to many menopausalwomen about what they were going through. So Iimmersed mysel in books on the subject o naturalhormone balance, and simultaneously began inter-rogating every woman I knew regarding their per-sonal experiences. Many pieces o a puzzle startedto come together in my mind. Almost without ex-ception, every woman I spoke with complained o amultitude o symptoms ranging rom uncom ortableto li e-threatening. I also interviewed many youngwomen in their 20s and 30s, only to ind that theywere dealing with a host o serious reproduction-related problems themselves. The symptoms wereremarkably consistent rom woman to woman, andas I read, it became clear that they all pointed to pro-gesterone de iciency.

    Who was Dr. Lee?

In my reading, I quickly stumbled upon Dr. John R.Lees books on natural hormone balance. He is hailedor his research on natural hormone balance, as well

as spearheading natural progesterone supplementa-tion therapy as a sa e alternative to conventional HRT(Hormone Replacement Therapy), which has beenproven to cause terrible side-e ects and even can-cer.

    Symptoms o hormonal imbalance

The ollowing is a list o symptoms that many wom-en with hormonal imbalance experience. It is byno means comprehensive. Some women have a ewo the symptoms, while others have many.

    Hot ashes

Allergy symptom, including asthma, hives, rashes, sinus congestionHypoglycemia

    In ertility and early miscarriage

    Depression with anxiety or agitation

    Fibrocystic breasts

Uterine broids (which can cause requent

    urination)PMS

    Endometriosis

    Irregular menstrual periods

    Water retention

    Vaginal dryness and atrophy

Fat and weight gain, especially in the hips, thighs, and abdomen

    Sleep disturbances (insomnia, less REM-time

    sleep)Decreased libido (sex drive)

    Mood swingsdepression, irritability, memorylossHeadaches, atigue

    Dry, thin, wrinkly skin

    Thinning scalp hair

Facial hair and hair in other places that it

    shouldnt beBone mineral loss (osteoporosis)

    Difuse body aches and pains

    Acceleration o the aging process

    Breast cancer, uterine cancer

Autoimmune disorders such as lupus erythematosis and thyroiditisThyroid dys unction

Do you know anyone with any o these symptomI think most o the women I know have at leasome o these, including mysel . I have always loovery young or my age, as do my mom and sistetake good care o mysel , drink a lot o water, take ish oil, but lately Ive been very bothered ththe skin on my hands has begun to look extremeldry, thin, shrunken, and wrinkly. What is Progesterone, anyway?

In a nutshell, progesterone is one o the primary re-productive hormones in the emalebody, ollowed by the estrogens andtestosterone. Progesterone is neces-sary or conception as well as carryinga baby to term.

In the ovaries, progesterone is theprecursor o estrogen, testosterone, and other adrenal hormones, as wellas steroids which are responsible orstress response, sugar and electrolytebalance, and blood sugar. This meansthat progesterone de iciency cancause a wide range o ailments, manyo which seem unrelated to reproduc-tive problems.

So why are women in industrialized countries sus-ceptible to progesterone de iciency, while womenin undeveloped countries are not? There are several key reasons or this, most o whichare ound in our synthetic environment. Exposureto xenohormones, stress, eating soy products (know-ingly or not), using hormonal contraception, chemicalexposure in the womb, using HRT, and hysterectomycan all play into our imbalance. Well scratch the sur-

ace o these topics, and you can dig deeper on your

    own.Xeno-what???

The term xenohormone and xenoestrogen re erto substances not ound in nature that have hor-monal e ects. Most o us come in contact with thesesubstances on a daily basis.

All xenohormones should be considered toxic; the ma- jority of them have estrogenic effects on both male and female bodies, say Dr. John R. Lee and Dr. Jesse Hanleyin their book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause . The ollowing list is also tak-en rom their book. Comments in parentheses mine.

Common Sources o XenohormonesSolvents and adhesives ( ngernail polish, super glue, contact cement, etc.)

Petrochemically derived pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides (On the grass, your apple, or theside of the road)

    Car exhaust

Emulsi ers found in soaps and cosmetics

Nearly all plastics (Dont we allstore our food and water in plastic?)

Industrial waste such as poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) anddioxins

Meat from livestock fed es-trogenic drugs to fatten them up (Anddairy products)

Synthetic estrogens and proges-tins found in the urine of millions of women who take birth control pills andhormone replacement therapy (HRT),which is ushed down the toilet and

eventually works its way into the food chain.(Yuck!!!)

What is Estrogen Dominance andwhat causes it?Waaayyy too much Estrogen!

So what does estrogen dominance mean? It simplmeans that the body has too much estrogen andnot enough progesterone. As Dr. Lee puts it, estrogedominance describes a condition where a woman cahave de icient, normal, or excessive estrogen but havlittle or no progesteroneto balance its e ects inthe body. Even a womanwith low estrogen lev-els can have estrogen-dominance symptomsi she doesnt have anyprogesterone. Xeno-hormones which we areexposed to on a daily basis mimic estrogen in oubodies causing this serious imbalance. To top this omany doctors prescribe women synthetic estrogen

to deal with the symptoms o estrogen dominancewhich leads to even worse estrogen dominance.

    Whats wrong with not ovulating?

Estrogen dominance results in lack o ovulation. short, a ter the egg, or ovum, is released at ovultion, the emptied ollicle becomes the corpus luteumthat makes progesterone. This is the primary way woman produces progesterone. So i you dont ovlate, your body wont make progesterone in any signi icant quantity. It can appear as i you are hav

a normal menstrual cycle even though you haventovulated, but the lack o progesterone can still causesymptoms associated with PMS, as well as makingconception impossible. Even i one ovulation cycleresults in conception, the lack o progesterone in thebody usually results in early miscarriage.

    Remember: Pro-Gest-erone = goodgestation.STTRRRESSS!

Stress can also cause an anovulatory cycle (a cyclein which there is no ovulation). So can heavy exer-cise, serious illness, dieting, and extremely low calorieintake. Women who try juggling careers and amilyor have demanding or competitive jobs also tend tohave anovulatory cycles. Su icient sleep is absolutelyessential to keep your bodys stress

levels down!Exposure to xenohormones inthe womb

In addition, xenoestrogen exposurein the uterus can cause ollicle ailureor women later in li e. This means that

epidemic numbers o women are in ertile becauseo the glass cleaners, plant growth ormulas, inger-nail polish, and spray paints their mothers used whilethey were in the womb. It takes very little exposure tostill experience the devastating e ects o these pow-er ul xenoestrogens. The reproductive organs o bothboys and girls are extremely vulnerable to permanentdamage while in the womb. What you cant see canhurt you, and your unborn child!

    Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy is also a common cause o estrogendominance. Doctors convince women to havehysterectomies to deal with the symptoms o estro-gen dominance. Un ortunately, conventional medi-cine compounds this problem by prescribing onlyestrogen and no progesterone (called unopposedestrogen) to these women. Many doctors lack propereducation about the use o natural progesterone, asthe pharmaceutical companies cannot patent, andthere ore cannot capitalize on the prescription o these highly e ective natural alternatives to conven-tional HRT. A sad but true act is that pharmaceuticalcompanies are the primary educators o our doctors, regarding the drugs that they sell. There is good rea-son that they dont know about the natural, non-pat-

entable, alternatives such as Natural Progesterone.

    Hormonal Contraception

The majority o modern birth control methodcontain synthetic hormones, or progestins, whicare not the same as the progesterone produced bythe body. These synthesized hormones have a longlist o side-e ects ranging rom uncom ortabli e-threatening, including causing cancer. Theman-made hormones ool the body into not cyclinproperly, and thus conception is avoided. Almost acontraceptive methods pushed on the public todaycontain hormones. Beware! Your body cannot remaiin balance when inundated with such a barrage ohormones.

Did you say that I ate estrogen??

    O. K. I think this one could be thhardest to avoid or some people

Did you know that soy is not really ood, but a drug? It is extremely hi

in estrogen, unless ermented. And thhard part is that soy is in just about everything, rom baby ormula to hea

ood crackers and cereals, to ast hamburgers and canned tuna ish. Jus

read the ingredient list on any box o ood you bIn addition to soy, many oods contain high concetrations o xenoestrogens rom the pesticides angrowth hormones used to produce them. The three

oods highest in pesticide content, and thus highesin xenoestrogens, are milk, co ee, and meat.

    Cholesterol You Need It!

The body needs good cholesterol, such as that ounin butter, coconut oil, ish oil, and extra virgin oloil, to manu acture progesterone. I it doesnt hathis vital building block, it cannot build. In contrarancid or hydrogenated oils like margarine, corn oshortening, peanut oil, and MOST other commonused oils inter ere with thyroid and hormonal balan

in every way conceivable. Please, give me some hope!

So what hope to women have? In a society wherxenoestrogens lurk around every corner, we cachoose to make li estyle changes to protect our owhealth and that o our amilies. O course, there some things that we cant change, but many we can

your hormonal health and that o youramily

Avoid exposure to chemicals that you know aredangerous.

Make lifestyle changes that lessen your stressload. (Dont starve yourself, exercise too much, or take on too many responsibilities that you dont

have to!)Eat a nutritious whole foods diet and drink lots of water.

Dont store or heat your food in plastic.

Consume healthy oils and fats such as coconutoil. Avoid hydrogenated oils at all costs!

Get plenty of sleepthe ultimate healer.

Avoid hormonal contraception and HRT like the plague.

Help bring hormonal balance through using a Natural Progesterone Cream.

    What is Natural Progesterone?

Natural Progesterone is bio-identical to the pro-gesterone produced by the human body. Thismeans that the molecular structure o Natural Pro-gesterone cannot be di erentiated when comparedto the molecular structure o the progesterone pro-duced by the body. When applied properly, a goodNatural Progesterone cream will give the body thephysiologic amount o progesterone needed to helpbring balance to the hormonal system. It o sets es-trogen dominance, bringing relie to a multitude o ailments including PMS and symptoms commonly as-sociated with Menopause.

    What about Wild Yam?

Wild Yam hasa long andwell-document-ed history o helping womensbodies to gainhormonal bal-ance. It is espe-cially good orcramping. While

this is true, there is a great deal o con usion aboutthe di erence between progesterone and Wild Yam.

In volume 13 o Cancer Forum, Dr. Lee sheds lion the issue by explaining that in the body, wemake (synthesize) progesterone from cholesterol. In thelab, the chemist makes (synthesizes) progesterone fromdiosgenin. This diosgenin from the wild yamlike thestigmasterol from soybeansis actually a precursor of a number of hormones. Thus, with only slight modifica-tion it can be made to duplicate the progesterone mol-ecule the body produces so that it can be fully utilized asneeded. This CANNOT be done by the human boI a woman is de icient in progesterone, Wild Yam be use ul, and may very well aid the body in gainibalance, but it is NOT progesterone, and cannot dwhat progesterone can do.

Creams are better than oral doses o pro-gesterone

Progesterone absorbs rapidly through the skin, intothe at, and then into the bloodstream, while ordoses o progesterone have to ilter through the livlessening the bene its exponentially. This means tha transdermal application takes much less actual progesterone to get the same bene its as a mega dosetaken orally. In addition, using a progesterone creamis much less burdensome on the liver.

Natural Progesterone is NOT a drug.

It is not a drug, like the many progestins pushed bpharmaceutical companies, and thus, cannot bepatented. This is one reason why many women ar

unaware o its incredible bene its. As stated bethere is big money behind HRT drugs, and someondoesnt want you to know that theres something saand much less expensive that might replace theidrugs.

    Side-efects o Natural Progesterone

Natural progesterone very rarely has side e ects, unlike its synthetic version. According to Dr. Lee,almost all side e ects are caused by gross overdoseor mixing other hormones such as estrogen and tes-tosterone. Some women report that they experienceestrogen dominance symptoms or up to two weeksa ter starting to use Natural Progesterone Cream, caused by a sensitization o estrogen receptors. Breasttenderness is common, but temporary. I a menstruat-ing woman takes natural progesterone out o phasewith her cycle, it could change the timing o her pe-riod or cause some spotting. All in all, it is extremelyrare or a woman to experience genuine side-e ects

    rom properly using Natural Progesterone.

As Dr. Lee repeats many times in his books, moreis not better! Use common sense and ollow Dr.Lees guidelines. I you do the math, a 2 oz. containershould last between 2-3 months, depending on indi-vidual usage.

Not all Progesterone creams are createdequal!

There are many natural progesterone creams onthe market today, but the majority o these creamcontain other chemicals as preservatives or or grance. Ironically, some o these chemicals act as xnoestrogens, sending con using signals and causin

urther hormone imbalance to the body. Dr. John Lrecommends that a progesterone cream contain 900-1000mg. o USP progesterone (concentration is reglated by the United States Pharmacopoeia) per 2 ozcontainer. Many progesterone creams, or so-calleWild Yam creams, on the market do not indicahow much actual progesterone is in their product, ouse obscure language to cloud or con use the readeThis is because USP progesterone is expensive. Masure that the ingredient listing indicates exactly howmany milligrams o USP progesterone are in eacontainer.
