Erie County Forest • Erie county’s reforestation program began here.• Two 1.75 mile trails through secondgrowth forest are marked by yellowpaint blazes. there also is a brailletrail. Along the trails wild berriesgrow, as well as jack in the pulpit, trillium, and columbine.• white tailed deer, raccoon, fox, and mink may be seen in the area.• The easier trail begins on the south-ern side of Genesee Rd. just downfrom the saw mill. It has naturestudy stations along the way. In win-ter, this path can be used for cross-country skiing and snowshoe-ing. The more difficult trailbegins across Genesee Rd. It covers some rough terrain, and has nonature study stations.In Spring, maple sugar ismade in a sugarhouse onthe premises.Directions: Take Rt. 240south to the Genesee Rd.Exit. Go left On Genesee Rd.Park up the road 3.5 miles on right.
ellicott creek parkThis 165 acre park is connected to theellicott creek bicycle path. the creek isideal for canoeing & kayaking andthere are opportunities to observebirds and other wildlife. Nearby is ellicott creek island park, a secludedspot with small pavilions for picnics.
eighteen mile creekbegins south of boston and flowsnorth to the village of hamburg, andthen west to lake erie. the creek mean-
ders through a deep gorgewhose well-exposed bluffsreveal ancient (Middle and
late devonian) rock strata.contained in the rocks
are abundant fossilsincluding corals,
brachiopods,crinoids, and trilobites. Anexcellent placeto fish or hikeis at Hobuckflats. There is a
bridge over thecreek and you can
drive to the park-ing area adjacent to
the creek. This site, developed by the towns of
Hamburg and Evans, can be accessedfrom Versailles Plank Rd. from either routes 5 or 20.
Knox Farm State ParkThis 633 acre park located in EastAurora includes a historic farm com-plex, farm animals, open grasslandsand pastures, ponds and woods. Thepark has biking, hiking, cross-countryskiing, and bird watching. Guidednature walks, horseback riding andstable tours are available. For moreinformation call 655-7200.
Scoby DamScoby Dam is a county owned parklocated in the Village of Springville. Itis a passive use linear strip of landalong Cattaraugus Creek from ScobyHill Road to Route 219. On the creek is adam and a small turn-of-the-centuryhydroelectric generating facility thatgenerated some electricity for theVillage of Springville in the past.
The historical building and damare listed on the National Registerof Historic Places. During certaintimes of the year, the waters belowthe dam are a popular fishing spotfor steelhead trout.

Penn DixiePaleontological andOutdoor Educational Center• This 49 acre site contains a richdeposit of Devonian fossils,Wetlands, And Wooded Areas. • Penn Dixie is InternationallyKnown for abundant & easily accessible invertebrate marine fossils, including brachiopods,crinoids, corals, trilobites andnumerous other animal remainsthat once occupied the warm tropical seas that covered WNY 380 million years ago. • Two shelters, over 1,400 ft. of barrier free trails & informationpanels are on site, with plans toconstruct an education centerbuilding, astronomy pad, addition-al barrier free trails and informa-tional panels throughout the site.• Fossil, geology, astronomy, birding and a variety of NaturePrograms are available. Alden Town Park & joe panza trailThis 60 acre park is located onEllicott Creek in the town ofAlden. It contains the 1.4 mileinterpretive Joe Panza naturetrail covered with wood chipsand gravel for easy walking andnature study. Good for cross-country skiing in the Winter.Wildlife consists of deer, fox,opossum, and a variety of birdsand fish. plants and trees,including hemlock, beech,yellow birch, and sugarmaples, line the trail.Directions: Take Rt. 20(Broadway) to village ofAlden. Take first left ontoChurch St. The park is across the street.
Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve• Nearly 300 acres of forests,ponds and wetlands, includingold growth American beech/sugar maple forest. Residentwildlife species include whitetailed deer, beaver, great blueheron, pileated woodpecker andspotted salamander.• Access to the preserve is limitedto the following times: Free guided nature walks offeredWednesday & Saturday at 10:00am(no reservations required). LilyPond loop self-guided trail openTuesday & Thursday 9:00am-4:00pm. Buckhorn State ParkThis park is an 895 acre naturepreserve on Grand Island. Theparking lot is on E. River Rd. atWoods Creek. Enjoy birdwatching, canoeing, hiking,biking and fishing in thehandicap accessible dockat the creek. Guidednature walks avail-able. Call 773-3271 formore information.
Beaver IslandState ParkEnjoy bird watching,hiking, canoeing andfishing at this 952 acre parkon the Niagara River onGrand Island.
