Erie County Forest • Erie county’s reforestation program began here. • Two 1.75 mile trails through second growth forest are marked by yellow paint blazes. there also is a braille trail. Along the trails wild berries grow, as well as jack in the pulpit, trillium, and columbine. • white tailed deer, raccoon, fox, and mink may be seen in the area. • The easier trail begins on the south- ern side of Genesee Rd. just down from the saw mill. It has nature study stations along the way. In win- ter, this path can be used for cross- country skiing and snowshoe- ing. The more difficult trail begins across Genesee Rd. It covers some rough terrain, and has no nature study stations. In Spring, maple sugar is made in a sugarhouse on the premises. Directions: Take Rt. 240 south to the Genesee Rd. Exit. Go left On Genesee Rd. Park up the road 3.5 miles on right. ellicott creek park This 165 acre park is connected to the ellicott creek bicycle path. the creek is ideal for canoeing & kayaking and there are opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife. Nearby is ellicott creek island park, a secluded spot with small pavilions for picnics. eighteen mile creek begins south of boston and flows north to the village of hamburg, and then west to lake erie. the creek mean- ders through a deep gorge whose well-exposed bluffs reveal ancient (Middle and late devonian) rock strata. contained in the rocks are abundant fossils including corals, brachiopods, crinoids, and trilobites. An excellent place to fish or hike is at Hobuck flats. There is a bridge over the creek and you can drive to the park- ing area adjacent to the creek. This site, developed by the towns of Hamburg and Evans, can be accessed from Versailles Plank Rd. from either routes 5 or 20. Knox Farm State Park This 633 acre park located in East Aurora includes a historic farm com- plex, farm animals, open grasslands and pastures, ponds and woods. The park has biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, and bird watching. Guided nature walks, horseback riding and stable tours are available. For more information call 655-7200. Scoby Dam Scoby Dam is a county owned park located in the Village of Springville. It is a passive use linear strip of land along Cattaraugus Creek from Scoby Hill Road to Route 219. On the creek is a dam and a small turn-of-the-century hydroelectric generating facility that generated some electricity for the Village of Springville in the past. The historical building and dam are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During certain times of the year, the waters below the dam are a popular fishing spot for steelhead trout. lake erie shoreline Woodlawn Beach State Park, Beautiful one mile natural sand beach with swimming on Lake Erie. Protected sand dunes, nature trails, wetlands and a boardwalk viewing area with Interpretive signage. Large bathhouse with changing facilities and lockers open seasonally. Impressive Nature Center with 24 foot wetland wall mural, “fish of Lake Erie” exhibit. Education staff on site. For more information and guided nature walks call 826-1930. sturgeon point, a developed marina with a public boat ramp, restrooms and snack bar located 20 miles south of downtown buffalo. about two miles beyond sturgeon point is... wendt beach, this 178-acre county park has a swimming beach (life- guards on duty during the summer), playgrounds and shady picnic grounds. The old wendt mansion overlooks lake erie. bennett beach is situated at the mouth of big sister creek; the beach is accessed by walking across a foot- bridge. some of the last beach dunes within erie county can be viewed here. a few miles south is... evangola state park, this 733-acre park is noted for its beautiful sandy beach. There is a bathhouse and snack bar at the beach in addition to picnic facilities with shelters and a “wedding gazebo”. This park is ideal for hiking, cross- country skiing and snowshoeing. Guided nature walks are available. Call 549-1802 for more information. Camping is available seasonally with some electric. For reserva- tions call 1-800-456-CAMP. Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Educational Center • This 49 acre site contains a rich deposit of Devonian fossils, Wetlands, And Wooded Areas. • Penn Dixie is Internationally Known for abundant & easily accessible invertebrate marine fossils, including brachiopods, crinoids, corals, trilobites and numerous other animal remains that once occupied the warm tropical seas that covered WNY 380 million years ago. • Two shelters, over 1,400 ft. of barrier free trails & information panels are on site, with plans to construct an education center building, astronomy pad, addition- al barrier free trails and informa- tional panels throughout the site. Fossil, geology, astronomy, birding and a variety of Nature Programs are available. Contact the Penn Dixie Site/ Hamburg Natural History Society, PO Box 772, Hamburg, NY 14075 at (716) 627-4560 for hours or to schedule a school or group visit. Visit the website at www.penndixie.org for program information. Directions: Big Tree Rd. in Hamburg to Bristol Rd. follow signs to the site. Alden Town Park & joe panza trail This 60 acre park is located on Ellicott Creek in the town of Alden. It contains the 1.4 mile interpretive Joe Panza nature trail covered with wood chips and gravel for easy walking and nature study. Good for cross- country skiing in the Winter. Wildlife consists of deer, fox, opossum, and a variety of birds and fish. plants and trees, including hemlock, beech, yellow birch, and sugar maples, line the trail. Directions: Take Rt. 20 (Broadway) to village of Alden. Take first left onto Church St. The park is across the street. Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve • Nearly 300 acres of forests, ponds and wetlands, including old growth American beech/ sugar maple forest. Resident wildlife species include white tailed deer, beaver, great blue heron, pileated woodpecker and spotted salamander. • Access to the preserve is limited to the following times: Free guided nature walks offered Wednesday & Saturday at 10:00am (no reservations required). Lily Pond loop self-guided trail open Tuesday & Thursday 9:00am- 4:00pm. Group Tours (10 or more people) by appointment. • Seasonal nature programs offered monthly, including owl prowls, wildflower walks, snow- shoe hikes, and programs for kids. Buckhorn State Park This park is an 895 acre nature preserve on Grand Island. The parking lot is on E. River Rd. at Woods Creek. There are developed hiking trails, paved bike and walk ways, and bird watching platforms overlooking the 250 acre cattail marsh. Enjoy bird watching, canoeing, hiking, biking and fishing in the handicap accessible dock at the creek. Guided nature walks avail- able. Call 773-3271 for more information. Beaver Island State Park Enjoy bird watching, hiking, canoeing and fishing at this 952 acre park on the Niagara River on Grand Island. This park has a wide array of activities includ- ing an 18 hole golf course, sand swimming beach with boardwalk, bath house facilities, snack bar, banquet facilities, boat marina with fishing docks, frisbee golf and orienteering courses, canoe launch, nature center and nature trails. In the winter months you can enjoy cross- country skiing, snowshoeing, a sledding hill and snowmobiling. Guided nature walks are avail- able year round. Call 773-3271 for more information. chestnut ridge park this four season, 1,213 acre park is well known for its toboggan slides and ski slope. a casino is located nearby where you can warm up. the western section of the park has numerous rustic pic- nic areas, open playgrounds and woodland trails.
