What are some different types of natural disasters?

Drought:a long

period of time with little or no

rainfall

-The longest drought in Mississippi lasted 107 weeks. -It began April 20, 2010 and endedMay 1, 2012.

Earthquake:

-The strongest earthquake in Mississippi Occurred on December 16, 1931 in Batesville.-It was felt over 65,000 square miles across northern Mississippi, parts of Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Flood:an overflowing of water onto land that

is normally dry

-The Great Flood of 1927 was the greatest flood in history on the Mississippi River.

-This is known as one of the worst natural disasters in the history

of the United States. -More than 23,000 square miles of landwas submerged, hundreds of thousands

of people were displaced, and around 250people died.

Landslide:the downward movement of rock, dirt,

or artificial earth

-Part of the one of the largest lakes in MS gave way in 2019. One side of the RossBarnett Reservoir began to slip. -Wet weather and the weight of traffic is causing this “landslide”.

Monsoon:

The greatest number of monsoon days was 99. this recordwas set in 1984.

It is considered a monsoon day when the average dew point is 55 degrees or higher.

Tornado:a violent, often

destructive whirling wind with a funnel shaped

cloud that moves across the land

-Candlestick Park Tornado happened March 3, 1966 in Jackson, Mississippi. It was named after a shopping mall which was leveled by the storm. -About 12.9 million dollars of damage was recorded. -58 people were killed and 518 were injured

There are 168 volcanoes in the United States that scientist consider

“active”. Most are in Alaska, the West or Hawaii.

Tsunami:

-Large tsunamis have occurred in the United States, mostly around the coast of California, Hawaii and

Alaska.

-March 1964 is noted as the largest tsunami to hit the United State’s Pacific Coast.

-Tsunamis are much more common in Japan than in theUnited States.

Typhoon: a tropical storm in the area of the Indian Ocean or the western Pacific

Hurricane: a storm with a violent wind

Typhoon/Hurricane:

-Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, China, Taiwan, and other countries on November 3, 2013. Winds

reached 195 mph and caused $2.98 billion in damage. -Hurricane Camille hit Mississippi on August 17, 1969.

It holds the record for the most damage from a hurricane.
