Preface to Meeting Nature AND Nurture: Moving to a Deeper Understanding of Adolescent HealthWelcome to the 2014 meeting of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

The Program Committee enthusiastically brings you a meeting highlighting the role of nature and nurture in adolescent health. Presentations will explore the interaction between inherited physical potential and sociocultural development and will emphasize how new information on brain development and environment during adolescence can inform the care we provide. These presentations are geared toward health professionals, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and educators in order to advance the field of adolescent and young adult health and improve outcomes for all adolescents and young adults.

This year, we have expanded the breadth of our offerings and have added new clinical, professional development, and research “tracks” within the meeting to make it easier to identify content of interest. Clinical sessions address timely issues such as long acting reversible contraceptive use, eating disorders, gender identity, psychopharmacology, substance use, sports medicine, and metabolic syndrome. Those labelled ‘foundations’ are intended to provide an evidence-based review of core adolescent health topics; ‘advances’ focus on recent research and treatment advances. Professional Development activities focus on skill-based educational sessions for both new and established health professionals, as well as ethics, health policy and advocacy efforts, and new initiatives affecting adolescent health. Research activities include the presentation of primary research, IRB development, manuscript writing, and the use of theoretical and conceptual models. This year we are also introducing a new format, the Poster Research Symposia, in order to facilitate discussion and collaboration amongst clinicians, policy makers, and researchers.

The Gallagher presentation will be delivered by Beatriz Luna, PhD, Staunton Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She will present her groundbreaking research characterizing the links between brain maturation and cognitive development in adolescents. Our second keynote address will be delivered by Niobe Way, EdD, Professor of Applied Psychology at New York University where she co-directs the Center for Research on Culture, Development, and Education. Her presentation will address the influential roles of culture and context — including socioeconomic and health disparities in adolescent and young adult development.

Presentations will explore the interaction between inherited physical potential and sociocultural development and will emphasize how new information on brain development and environment during adolescence can inform the care we provide.

54

We are also pleased to present our Second Annual Adolescent and Young Adult Plenary session in which adolescents and young adults will provide their perspectives on the role of nature and nurture in their lives and how they believe each of these forces influences their health.

In addition to the formal educational offerings, the meeting will highlight one of SAHM’s greatest strengths — its members. The program offers a number of social activities to help attendees develop and strengthen professional relationships with colleagues nationally:

• All new and prospective members are invited to the SAHM New/Prospective Membership Orientation on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 12:30-1:30pm.

• We are also continuing the SAHM Fun Walk to be held on Tuesday, March 25, from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Feel free to either walk or run. All proceeds from the walk support the SAHM Edie Moore Student Travel Scholarship program, so even if you choose to sleep in, your donation is welcome!

• The program committee is also working to develop more informal gatherings and details for social venues in Austin. Check the bulletin board and onsite program for additional social opportunities.

I want to thank the Program Committee, who worked extremely hard to help make this outstanding 2014 program. First, I must highlight the amazing contribution of Gina Sucato, Associate Director of Programs, to the development of all aspects of the program. Her clear thinking and passion for adolescent health was instrumental in identifying new topics and developing the meeting pathways. I also want to thank Dede Blake (Abstract Chair) and Diane Straub (Deputy Abstract Chair) for leading the committee in choosing our outstanding research and poster sessions. Manuel Angel Oscos-Sanchez was instrumental in developing our new poster symposia and providing leadership on the youth plenary. Lana Lee led the effort to expand our offerings for health professionals in training and new members. Aletha Akers, David Breland, Suzanne Bumpus, Cynthia Holland-Hall, Cari McCarty, Maria Monge, Pamela Murray, Nimi Singh, Joan-Carles Suris, and Tami Thomas all made invaluable contributions to the development of meeting content. Finally, a huge thanks and gratitude to SAHM staff members Susan Tibbitts, Ryan Norton, Lyn Maddox, Kim Santos and Kasia Chalko. This amazing and dedicated group of individuals provided unwavering support, ideas, and information without which this meeting would not be possible.

We hope that you find the meeting educational and invigorating and that it will inspire you to implement new programs and strategies when you return home. Additionally we hope that it fosters friendships, both new and old, and generates opportunities for collaboration with colleagues both near and far.

Meeting ObjectivesAs a result of this meeting, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the influence of both inherited and sociocultural factors on health risk behaviors and health outcomes during adolescence.

2. Identify and describe best practices for adolescent health maintenance in the United States and globally.

3. Understand the latest advances in the evaluation and treatment of the major causes of adolescent morbidity.

Educational NeedSAHM members help to plan and coordinate professional adolescent health education programs in all regions of the United States and across the globe. These programs are directed at specialists in the field, as well as to other interested health professionals aiming to acquire skills to meet the important needs of adolescents. At SAHM’s Annual Meeting, innovative research, clinical workshops and discussion forums are presented for attendees of diverse disciplines.

The age-old question of how biology and environment interact to result in health outcomes becomes increasingly important as our understanding of genetics and neurobiology expands and the environment for so many of our youth becomes ever more stressful. In order to help our adolescents and young adults capitalize on their innate strengths and learn to thrive in all settings, health professionals need a better understanding of this question. The 2014 SAHM annual meeting theme, “Nature and Nurture” will provide an opportunity to expand our understanding of this topic and will enable health professionals involved in clinical care, intervention and prevention efforts, research, advocacy, and policy develop strategies to promote health for all youth.
