nature’s greetingsWWF greeting card collection 2006
stop the degradation of our planet's natural environment
Here in the UAE, we have a strong tradition of working for the betterment of our culture, society and environment. It was inthis spirit that I agreed to become the patron of WWF’s first permanent presence in the Middle East here in the UAE.
WWF has been closely associated with the region for many years and recentsuccesses include “Operation Oryx”, a project developed to protect theArabian Oryx from extinction. Other projects include establishing protectedareas of natural habitat like the tidal marshes, mangroves and coral reefs tothe protection of many indigenous species such as the Arabian Leopard andMarine Turtles.
WWF is working for the long-term preservation of the environment and theimmense natural wealth that we find here in the UAE. It aims, with the
assistance of local agencies and businesses, to create a consciousness of the many environmental issues that face societyevery day in the hope that together we can all make a difference.
By working together, pooling resources and sharing knowledge, I am confident that we can bring about that change and realconservation achievement in our uniquely beautiful part of the world.
Through the support and co-operation of the UAE society today, I am sure we can share in its many successes with theconfidence they will still be enjoyed by generations to come.
Your support and concern is very much appreciated.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan

WWF’s association with the Arabian Peninsula dates back to the early 1960s. In recent years, the conservation organisation hasestablished a credible presence in the UAE by its work with local agencies to raise environmental and conservation awareness inthe region.
Education plays a key role in raising such awareness, particularly among the young, and the Enviro-Spellathon succeeds inaccomplishing this. Implemented in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, this programme willcontinue in schools; developing a sense of involvement in every one of the 125,000 student participants to date.
Qarnein Island remains a major achievement as the first internationally recognised Marine Protected Area in the Arabian Gulf, and itsacknowledgement by the WWF as a ‘Gift to the Earth.’ Owned by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the island, we hope,is a forerunner to other protected areas in the region.
WWF’s work with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) has assisted the UAE in lifting a CITEStrade suspension. Further, by conducting an extensive awareness and training programme, WWF enhanced the capacity of localenforcement agencies to detect and act upon violations by illegal traders. This resulted in a record number of seizures of illicitwildlife trade in the last 12 months.
WWF would like to extend its thanks to Dubai Municipality for the provision of its office in the historical area of Al Bastakia, Dubai. This designated heritage area housing the Sheikh Mohammed Cultural Centre and other non-profit organisations, will enable WWFto successfully continue its conservation work in the region.
WWF would also like to thank ERWDA for its continuous support; our corporate members fortheir encouragement; and all individuals who support us and promote our activities in the UAE.
By making a purchase from WWF’s range of greeting cars and merchandise, you are generouslycontributing and continuing to support the WWF mission to stop the degradation of the naturalenvironment. You are also helping build a future where the people of the UAE can live in harmonywith nature for many years to come.

the challenge for WWF is that all environmentproblems are important - but one organisation cannottackle them all. Therefore we need to focus on criticalplaces and issues, and forge partnerships to make a
measurable difference to the state of the world.
