TASK VII – FINAL REPORT SOLID WASTE FIGURES
For
SOLID WASTE LANDFILL
CELL CONSTRUCTION
Typical Landfill Cell Construction Notes:
The following four figures illustrate the modeled landfill cell that was used for the
landfill cost analysis portion of this study. The cell as illustrated is the initial landfill cell
of a multi-cell landfill. Figure One shows a cell excavation diagram with two different
side slopes. The Four- percent slope would be on the perimeter side of the landfill and
the two- percent slope would be on the side where an adjoining cell would be
constructed. The location of the leachate drain is shown on the diagram. A cleanout
would be placed on the up slope side of the cell. The leachate pipe could drain to either a
manhole or sump where the fluid could be transported to an evaporation pond or to a
wastewater treatment facility. The leachate drain could also lead to an on-side leachate
evaporation pond.
Figure Two shows the plan of a single full cell and a profile section across the full cell.
Figure Three is a detail of the bottom of a landfill cell. This figure shows the placement
of the GCL underlayer, the HDPE liner and the two feet of layer of liner protection and
drainage sand that covers the liner. The French drain system for leachate removal is
shown at the bottom of the cell.
Figure Four is a profile of a completed edge cell showing the cleanout portion of the
leachate pipe. The final cover is shown by 36 inches of soil material. The cover
thickness shown may not be site specific for the recommended evapotranspiration cover.
The drawings are for illustration purposes only and are not meant for actual construction
of a landfill cell.
