ITTsupplied large parts of the GPS satellite's signal generation system but ITT Avionics had failed to obtain any of the receiver programme. STL was tasked to get into the UK programme. We were sucessful, against the incumbents, Plessey and Decca, and won a contract to build 5 receivers. The learning curve was very steep but the receivers were delivered and sucessfully trialled on land sea and air. These were the first full P-code ( full precision) receivers built outside the US and STC was the first to publicly demonstrate one at the Farnborough Air Show . Sadly, STC / STL lost out to Plessey in the follow on programme but the expertise was used later to develop a high performance receiver and GPS simulators.We sold the GPS business to Raytheon in 1991 when Nortel acquired us.
