These mindsets will prepare students for careers within and beyond the Pittsburgh region in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, with a firm liberal arts background. Nazareth Prep engages in Project Based Learning. Our students work as a team to use and expand their local, national, and global understandings and skills to create authentic projects that answer dynamic, real world questions. Our school is on a trimester system, and at the end of each trimester students participate in an exhibition where they tie in everything they learn from their courses to answer real world questions. Mentors, community partners and parents are all invited to come view student exhibitions. “Real-World” Rigorous Learning (RWR) is different than traditional definitions of rigorous learning that focus on lecture-driven classes, AP classes and high-stakes multiple choice tests. RWR Learning is a proven way of education reform focused on combining skills like problem solving, critical thinking and writing into projects, student exhibitions and ePortfolios that mimic the real workplace and often times, graduate school! In RWR Learning, students often work in teams, on topics in non-linear ways clustered by themes like “revolution, social justice or energy.” Graduates of a RWR Learning school are typically more refined with public speaking skills, technology literacy and business etiquette. This style of learning at Nazareth Prep has lead to the positive outcomes parents seek such as acceptance into colleges and universities, apprentice programs, increased student engagement, an attendance rate of 92% (compared to sending district schools with 60-80% ADA) and less than 5% suspension rate.
