1919The Nazi party begins as a gang of Unemployed SoldiersBy the end of 1920, the Nazi Party had about 3,000 members. 1921 Hitler became its official leader, or FührerThe new Government struggles for control,

"stabbed in the back“ theory– a belief that Germany was betrayed by its leftwing politicians, Communists, and Jews.

1923

• Beer Hall Putsch—Hitler attempts to overthrow local authorities in Munich, and Fails

• The right-wing presiding judges sympathized with Hitler and sentenced him to only five years in prison

1925

• While in prison, Hitler wrote volume one of Mein Kampf (My Struggle), printed in 1925

• Hitler is released from Prison and begins to rebuild the Nazi Party

• By the end 1925 membership is 27,000-by 1929 108,000

1929-1932

• The Great Depression begins—1in3 are unemployed by 1932

• The Government collapse, unable to deal with the economic hardships

• 1932 elections Nazi Party won 37%• 400,000 SA troops take part in daily

street violence

1933

• Hitler becomes Chancellor and the Nazi Party quickly consolidates power

• February 27, 1933, the Reichstag building burns down

• Nazis immediately claimed it to be the beginning of a Communist revolution

• Hitler is able to suspend civil rights as part of a Degree for the Protection of the People and State

1935

• Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of their civil rights as German citizens

• More than 120 laws, decrees, and ordinances are passed before the end of WWII and comes to include many other groups

1936

• Berlin hosted the Olympics• Hitler wanted to use the Olympics to

demonstrate "Aryan superiority“• Jesse Owens, an African American

wins 4 gold medals• Hitler left the stadium when he

received his medals

1938

• Hitler annexes Austria as part of his plan to unite all German Speaking people

• Munich Conference—France and Britain allow Hitler to occupy the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia

• "Night of Broken Glass" (Kristallnacht) November 9, 1938

1939

• On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland, officially starting World War II

• In just 4 weeks Poland collapses, before France and Britain are able to mobilize

• Hitler begins the “New Order” and begins to eliminate “Undesirables"
