    Introduction

-While many consider the Nazi regime to be a cruel and oppressive one, manygroups of people still benefited in some areas from Hitler's rule.

-Some people still think of the Nazi regime as a prosperous time, where

unemployment was little and Germany was progressively becoming a strongercountry.

-Thus, the German people benefited from the Nazi rule in the 1930s through itseconomic policy, public works programmes, rearmament and conscription, self

sufficiency, and through other Nazi policies.

    Economic policy

-In 1933, the German economy was in ruins.

-Thus, the Nazis passed many laws to solve the problem of unemployment.Government spending rose, from 1932 to 1938 by about 25 billion marks.

-From 1933 to 1938, about 7000 km of Autobahn was built.

-The unions like the Labour Front (DAF) and the Reichsarbeitsdienst

(RAD/National Labor service) was formed, which conscripted unemployedGerman workers to work on public works programmes.

    Public works programmes

-When Hitler was elected as Chancellor in 1933, unemployment in Germanypeaked at 6 million, which was near 33% of the working population.

-However, Hitler implemented several public work programmes which drastically

reduced unemployment to about 301 thousand in January 1939.

-Disclaimer! The huge fall in employment from the 6 million in 1933 came fromNazi figures. Non Germans, Jews and women were not included in the figures.

    Public works programmes

-One example of the public work programmes is the Autobahn projects, which were tolink major cities by building gigantic highways.

-These projects required a huge amount of labour force, thus unions like the LabourFront (DAF) and the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD/National Labor service) was formed.

-These unions conscripted many unemployed Germans into vast work teams to work onthe public works programmes.

-This benefitted the Germans as unemployment was a very serious problem for the

people of Germany. Due to the Autobahn projects, a stable source of income wasprovided for the unemployed.

    Rearmament & conscription

-Hitler did not agree with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles in whichGermanys military suffered a huge loss in numbers.

-Hitler secretly started to rearm Germany, telling his Generals in 1933 to

prepare to treble the size of the army to 300,000 men, and he ordered theAir Ministry to build 1000 war planes. Military buildings like barrackswere also built.

-Hitler withdrew from the Geneva Disarmament Conference where theFrench refused to disarm to the level of Germany or let Germany re-arm tothe level of the French.

    Self - sufficiency

-Hitler hoped to achieve self sufficiency, or Autarky, for Germany.

-This was difficult as Germany couldnt afford to import raw materials.

-Hitler almost succeeded, however Germany still relied on Swedish ironore imports, and other imported food.

-thus, the 4 year plan was introduced in 1936 to move Germany tobecome a self-sufficient country.

-It aimed to reduce unemployment, increase automobile production, initiate

numerous building and architectural projects, and to further develop theautobahn system.

    Self - sufficiency

-Also, there was also the notion of Lebensraum, which was the idea ofterritorial expansion to gain raw materials and Lebensraum, or livingspace.

-Due to the treaty of Versailles, Germany had lost numerous amounts ofterritory, which caused Germany to become overpopulated.

-Adolf Hitler once said that We are overpopulated and cannot feed

ourselves from our own resources. This justified their territorialexpansions.

    Other nazi policies

-Other Nazi policies that benefited the German people included the Strengththrough Joy programme, the Beauty of Work programme, the Hitler Youthorganization, and the League of German Girls/League of German Maidens.

-In 1933, Robert Ley, a Nazi politician, formed the Labour Front (DAF), andimplemented the Strength through Joy programme, which saw the construction of2 cruise liners which took German workers on holidays. German workers were alsogiven free holidays.

-It also saw the construction of numerous sports facilities, paid theatre visits, andfinancially-supported travelling cabaret groups. It also subsidized the Volkswagen,or the Peoples Car.

-The Nazi culture was very youth-orientated, as organizations such as theHitler Youth, and the League of German Girls/Maidens combined excitingactivities with propaganda for young men and women.

-Side note, Aryan girls were sometimes taken to special camps to be bred with Aryan boys under the

    Lebensborn Program.

    Conclusion

-Overall, the German people benefited to a certain extent from theNazi regime, as unemployment rate was low, Germany was slowlybuilding up its military and resources, and there was an emphasis ontraditional family values which the German people liked.

-However, many German people were ignorant of the atrocities that theNazis committed towards the Jews, the Gypsies, and other minority races.

-Even though they had a government that ran Germany fairly well, therewas still no freedom of speech, and any who stood to oppose Hitler wasquickly stopped and put to death/concetration camps. It was basically atotalitarian regime.

    Conclusion

-In the end, the problems and disadvantages of the Nazi regime stilloutweighed the benefits of it.

-A saying goes, A miserable free man is better off than a contented slave.

Freedom of rights is still important and it should not be overlooked.
