What if there was a new type of monumentality in Los Angeles?

These new monumental forms attach themselves to the exist-ing infrastructure, in order to transform the perception of the both: the highway and the city.


The forms disrupt Los Angeles infrastructure by settling into their residue, they consist of apertures that allow for the pass-ing of ramps and elevated freeways.

The Chicago Bungalow is a proposal for a housing block that is suitable for everyone from students to nuclear families. Instead of mainting the regular double loaded corridor, as found in much of housing, the corri-dor is now on the exterior. It is a platform which allows residents access onto their units, as well as to their private balconies.

The monotony of the urban environment propels the idea of preserving a space solely meant to fulfill a desire for understanding. This convention center follows it’s traditional role of being a gathering space for people with similar avocations but furthers this idea by becoming a pensieve for soft moments. It is an assortment of atmospheres that allow for an empathetic experience within the uncompromising city.

Heavy Rotation pairs the formal and material results of distributing excessive mass in the physical world (weight, loading, adjacency, gravity) with the precision of digital modeling software’s most basic command: revolve. Technically, this course considers a shift in digital fabrica-tion from operating (processing commands in software or hardware) to tooling (constructing low-tech, project-specific material assemblies). Traditionally, the machining of 360-degree forms was limited to low-tech revolution tools such as the rotational lathe, a machine only capable of revolving single section profiles along one axis. Speculating on the role of tooling, we paired hi-tech digital machining (cnc, laser cutting, 3d print-ing) with low-tech industrial design prototype manufacturing methods such as upholstery, casting, and vacuum forming in effort to produce variable section profiles, asymmetrical distributions of mass along mul-tiple axis, and material nuance distinct from the rigors of their computa-tional counterparts.

The pavilion addresses the problem of sensory overload in our everyday lives. Our senses are able to absorb enough stimuli in order to read our environment and make desicions. Increasing control over energies produces an overstimulation of the senses. Is the solution to hold back or give the body the ability to channel through these stimuli?

These channels are predesigned with the visual stimuli, chemical stimuli (scent/taste), and environmental factors (humidity/pressure/temperature) in order to create this immersive environment.A turn of the dial for the user could mean the introduction of a new habitat within the same space.

alternate realityCompetition: Building Trust International / Playscapes 2013Team: Bureau Bureau (Nazifa Virani & Shifa Virani)

The site chosen for this playscape was once destined to become a new icon in the chicago skyline- The Chicago Spire at 400 North Lake Shore Drive. After a series of economic failures all that is left is a void. Utilizing this void as a basis of a productive design, we aim to celebrate this void by placing a trampoline over its heart. Our proposal is that of an adaptive reuse, rather than wasting more resources to hide the void, we designed a playscape that embraces it.

A spiral ramp, a typology reminiscent of the Spire, is place atop the structure, allowing views into the city and over the river. This playscape is an attempt to bring Chicago back to Daniel Burnham’s 1909 plan. It is an architecture that allows for enjoyment and par-ticipation. It allows for the users to stand over the river, and once again claim it as their own.
