December 2012FOREVER YOUNG

Hello, Forever Young readers.

I have been working on this wonder-ful publication for a year now, behindthe scenes, making sure that all theinformation ended up on the page andbefore your eyes.

Now, with a few changes and somerevamping, I’ve accepted the challengeof writing Forever Young, but will stillhelp produce it. It couldn’t have come ata better time because the arts are a truelove of mine, as well as the focus of theDecember edition of Forever Young.

When I was little, I remember the busrides from school to museums. Therewere tons of museums to go to and as Iwalked around, bright-eyed and filledwith wonder, I became fascinated witha world that was beautiful.

Whether it was a science museum,Ripley’s Believe It or Not in St. Augustineor an art museum, I was always

enthralled with what was on eachcorner, wall and display.

When I was 18, I took a trip to NewYork City. When my cousin asked what Iwanted to see, the first place on my listwas the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Surrounded by paintings, statues andjewelry from around the world throughdifferent periods of time, I fully under-stood the history around me.

Each component of “the arts,” showsus glimpses into other worlds, one thatis not in the here and now. They are atemporary distraction from life.

My love of the arts is found not only inpaintings, but in the beauty of music, the well-choreographed steps of a balletor the perfect reenactment of a charac-

ter. This area of our beautiful state has

more than enough to offer, and Decem-ber is bursting at the seams with plays, recitals, symphonies and museumsfocusing on the holidays. There’s no

excuse not to get out of the house andwatch the beautiful light displays.

After all …’tis the season! There is so much to the holidays:

The season of tttthhhheeee aaaarrrrttttssss

Holiday music on tap throughout the Space Coast

BREVARD — With three concertscoming up in December, the Indi-alantic Chamber Singers look at theholidays as a time when they can trulyenjoy the season and perform musicthrough the ages.

David Vogeding, founder and direc-tor of the Chamber Singers, explainedthat the group will perform musicfrom all different genres and frommany different eras.

“We perform all periods of musicfrom medieval to renaissance, baroque to classic and romantic andcontemporary to some avant gardemusic,” Mr. Vogeding said.

The Chamber Singers first cametogether in 1999, following a localwedding. Mr. Vogeding was asked toprovide a choir of singers for the eventand found an interest in starting a

small ensemble for Melbourne.“I then set out to find singers, who

wanted to sing in a small, more spe-cialized group and who could prepareand perform the small chambermusic literature of which there is anabundance,” Mr. Vogeding said.

On Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., the Indi-alantic Chamber Singers will join theBrevard Children’s Chorus and theAlleluia Bells for a Sounds of Christ-mas concert. This is a family eventthat will take place at St. John TheEvangelist Parish, 5655 Stadium Park-way, Viera.

On Dec. 9, the Indialantic Singerswill join the Space Coast FluteOrchestra to present two Christmasconcerts. The first, at 2 p.m., will be atSuntree United Methodist Church, and the second, at 4:30 p.m. will be atEastminster Presbyterian Church inIndialantic.

These are free events, in whichdonations for the groups’ yearlyexpenses are appreciated.

BREVARD — The Space Coast Sym-phony Orchestra has a packed sched-ule for the holiday season that kicksoff on Nov. 30, but founder and artis-tic director Aaron Collins said the hol-idays are special for the orchestra.

“These shows are very fun for usand everyone loves holiday music,”Mr. Collins said. “These are very dif-ferent holiday shows, a little moreoutside of the box.”

Since the orchestra’s inception in2009 they’ve performed more than200 concerts.

“The orchestra was started becausewe wanted to make music accessibleand get younger people to go to con-certs,” Mr. Collins said.

Mr. Collins said he saw differentareas in the music world that neededaddressing, such as music education.Ultimately, he wanted a way to makemusic affordable for people of allages.

The first of the holiday shows is onNov. 30 and its theme is “Christmas atthe Movies.”

The orchestra gets scores to specificmovies and performs the soundtracksto classic Christmas films while the

movies play on a big screen. In early December, the orchestra

will push variety with their produc-tion, “A Jazz Christmas.”

“We have a 16-piece jazz orchestrathat is different from the symphony

orchestra,” Mr. Collins said. “Theyplay a bunch of holiday tunes withsome twists. It’s definitely for the jazzaficionado.”

The orchestra will end the seasonwith Handel’s “Messiah” sing along, a

free concert. Singers from all over Bre-vard County, and anyone else whowants to participate, sing with theorchestra.

Change can be good, when embraced correctly

Times change, dress changes, even “the change” has changed.

I know some of us (usually the men-folk) yearn for the old days whenthings were simpler (for them) but Idon’t think I would have fared verywell at all. I cannot picture myself in awoolen bathing suit rushing homefrom taking the children to the beachso I can have a home-cooked lunchwaiting for my husband when he getshome from the polls, while fightinghot flashes, during prohibition.

Most symptoms of “the change” arenow treatable to a certain extent, shortening the late-night hours spentfanning ourselves considerably withthe freezer door.

Holidays may be one constant in ourlives but the way we celebrate hascertainly come a long way.

When my children were young, weusually had the big family day at our

house. My husband’s family wouldconverge in the morning, cousinsusually began running and screamingin all directions just about the timeMacy’s parade began, we would befinishing the last piece of pie (for themoment) just as the game came on,then coffee and more pie duringhalftime.

As my family aged and grew withthe addition of significant others, thearrival of my grandchildren and newsets of in-laws, we re-invented ourcelebrations as necessary.

I began serving a brunch on theholidays; my children could spend halfthe day with us then be free to enjoy

turkey and trimmings with the otherside of their families.

Contrary to popular opinion,(usually from the other side of thefamily) I did not arrange things thisway to have the pleasure of mygrandchildren’s company when theywere awake and bright in the morningnot tired and cranky later in theafternoon. Nor was it my intention tobe the grammy that loves them themost by filling them with hand/turkeycookies or gingerbread men just tosend them to their other grandpar-ents.

But still we grew. None of us havehomes large enough to accommodate45-plus people and still have room forall the cousins (second and thirdgeneration now) to run and scream, sowe once again became harbingers ofchange.

Our latest change-vention is a hugegathering in a nearby park. We are

blessed to live in a place that lives upto the title the Sunshine State, sorenting a pavilion at any of the beauti-ful parks in Brevard works out won-derfully.

Since gathering my large brood intoone place at one time has becomeakin to herding cats, especially duringthe holidays, we now celebrateThanksmas.

Plastic Thanksgiving and Christmastablecloths surround the hand-embroidered linen masterpiece left tome by my mother. My brother’s old -fashioned biscuit warmer holds store-bought dinner rolls. Shorts and tennisshoes are better suited to flag footballgames than white shirts and ties.

There are special challenges tohaving the traditional dinner outside, away from stoves and microwaves butit’s always a learning experience. Youcan’t blow out Sterno (my eyebrows

As a person with a family memberwho has Alzheimer’s I have beenvery concerned about my own

brain health. As we age, the first thing we may

notice is a bit of forgetfulness (“brainfog”). This can be caused by increasedoxidative stress that causes free radicaldamage to the brain.

As we get older the hippocampus(the area of the brain responsible forprocessing and storing new informa-tion) starts to shrink. Let’s face it, intoday’s fast-paced world there aremany more distractions to think aboutfrom cell phones, Facebook and emails.Added to distractions and free radicalsis the fact that many of us are eatingless of the needed nutrients our brainsneed because of genetically modifiedor nutrient poor processed foods.

Fortunately, the adult brain contin-ues to grow and develop throughout itslife. By keeping it strong with proper

sleep, hydration, physical exercise andmental exercises with puzzles, readingor playing games we can create newpathways in the brain.

With herbs you can help get to theunderlying cause as well and providethe brain with its needed nutrients.

The Indian spice turmeric is anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant herb tothe brain. It has the ability to stimulatethe immune system to protect thebrain from building up amyloid beta-plaque, or senile plaque, which inter-feres with memory and judgment.

The ayurvedic herb bacopa binds tobrain cell receptors and neutralizes freeradicals in the brain, enhancing brain

oxygen and helping you remembernew information. It also helps withassociative learning and logical memo-ry. Its neuro-protective actions make itgood for people who have memoryproblems due to injury or nervousexhaustion.

In more than 400 studies ginkgo hasbeen found, if started early enough, toenhance short-term memory, attentionspan, cognitive functions and neuro-logical processes. Research found it tobe a strong free radical scavenger to thebrain and an herb that enhancescirculation to the brain reducingvascular deficiencies that can causeplaque buildup.

Sage’s anti-oxidant and anti-inflam-matory properties aid it in its ability toboost chemical levels to the brain thatit needs to transmit messages andenhance memory.

Ginseng helps enhance cognitivefunctions by supporting the adrenalglands when we are under stress. Stress

causes elevated levels of cortisol, whichover time, leads to a deterioration ofbrain cells affecting moods, sleep andmemory.

Rosemary the “herb of remem-brance” can help you stay alert andfocused. I like to put a little of itsessential oil on my collar when I amdoing research or studying and againwhen I want to recall what I havelearned.

Your brain is not a self-sufficientorgan. It is important that you removethe buildup of plaque and excito-toxinsand supply it with quality nutrientsfrom foods, herbs or supplements. This, along with proper sleep, hydration andexercise both physical and mental yourbrain will be working strong for quite awhile.

Hand care and safety during the holidays

Many people liken the holidays tofootball, family and the delectablearomas of roasted turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, cinnamon andpumpkin pie.

No matter what’s included as holi-day fare, one dish nobody antici-pates is a hand injury. This holidayseason, Amanda Mosher, occupa-tional therapist for Melbourne Ter-race, cautions people to take steps tocarve the main dish and not theirhands.

Throughout the holi-day season, people sus-tain hand injurieswhile preparing their

holiday feast. Fromcarving the turkeyto post-meal clean-up, hand injuries are

all too common. In fact, one-third ofall acute injuries seen in the emer-gency room involve the upperextremity (arm and/or hand). Followthese easy tips to keep your celebra-tion free from injury:

• Care needs to be taken whenwashing dishes – especially soap-covered and slippery glassware.

• Always carve and cut away fromyourself. Your free hand should beplaced opposite the side you arecarving towards and never under theblade to catch meat slices.

• The cutting board must be placedon a stable surface area and must bewell-lit and dry to prevent slippingwhile chopping.

• Knife handles should be kept dry. • Cutting utensils should be sharp.

A dull knife is still sharp enough tocause an injury and a sharp utensildoesn’t need to be forced in order tocut, slice, chop or carve.

• Consider using an electric knifeto ease the carving of meat.

• Use kitchen shears to tackle thejob of separating bones and joints.

• Meat and pumpkin carvingshould be performed by adults whohave good hand dexterity, strengthand sensation.

• If strength, sensation and goodhand dexterity are in question, seeyour physician for a prescribed eval-uation with a occupational therapist.
