WHAT(S IN THE LIBRARY(

Books & DVDs are available for students to borrow. There are almost 100,000 items in the Library’s collection!

Check out and return items at theIssue Desk.

Some books are for library use only -- these are marked with red tape. This is usually because the book isparticularly rare, fragile, difficult toreplace, or because it’s in high demand.

HOW ARE THE BOOKS ORGANISED(

We use the Dewey Decimal System. This is a way of organising books by subject --great for browsing similar books on a particular topic!

The letters are usually the first three letters of the artist or author’s surname,or sometimes the title of the book.

Here are the 10 main Dewey headings:

000-

100-

200-

300-

400-

500-

600-

700-

800-

900-

The numbers go from 000 to 999.These indicate the broad subject area.Often, there’s a decimal point after thesubject number, with further numbersand letters. This gives more detailedinformation about the exact subjectof the book.

For example:• 709 is Art• 709.415 is Irish Art specifically,• 709.41505 is 21st Century Irish Art even more specifically.

E-RESOURCES

The Library provides access to a number of e-journal titles and resource databases.

On campus, you can access these through the Library website. The databases know you’re an NCAD student if you access them on the campus network.

Off campus, you need to log in using your MyAthens login details first --this mimics the effect of being on campus, as far as the databases are concerned. It’s just one extra step.

IT support will send these details to your student email.

THE RESEARCH PROCESS

Why do I need research?

Don’t just rely on Google, though!

CONCLUSIONS

Research is the systematic study of sources and materials in order to findout information.

It’s just one way of searching the internet, and the results it shows you can be biased - the results you see are affected bythings like your location and yourbrowsing history.

It’s perfectly ok to use Google to start off, just don’t rely on it alone. The same goes for Wikipedia. It’s fine to use for quickly getting up to speed on a topic that you don’t know much about, but don’t rely on it alone.

Read on for some simple but effective research tips . . .

1. DEFINE YOUR NEEDS

What information do you need? What words would you use to describethe information you need? What is the best place to find thisinformation?

Try not to rely too heavily just on sources you find online -- not all of the world’s information is available on the internet,so you would miss out on a lot.Try to draw your information from many different types of sources too (e.g. blogs, journals, videos, books). This helps avoid major gaps in your information.

2. FIND YOUR SOURCES

How do you find the source of your infor-mation quickly and effectively?

The Library holds many kinds of high-quality sources and we can helpyou find them quickly - just ask us!Check out other libraries, officialgovernment publications, community archives too.Search databases and catalogues, talk to your tutors and gallery staff.Exercise those detective skills!

Page 14: NCAD LIBRARY ZINEThis zine will tell you all about the library and why it’s so amazing --we’re a room full of books, yes, but we’re so much more! ... It’s fine to use for quickly

3. EVALUATE YOUR INFORMATION

Not all sources are created equally. Try to figure out how reliable the information is.

ASK YOURSELF(

WHEN WAS

THIS WRITTEN(

IS IT RELEVANT(

IS THIS

INFORMATION

RELIABLE(

IS THIS ACCURATE(

Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s Accurate.

Is this information something that could change quickly?

Who created this information? Why did they create It?Has the author published other workon the subject before? Is the source recommended by atutor or librarian?

Check if your information has been peer reviewed or edited by someone who is an authority on the subject.

Peer review is a process where experts in a subject will evaluate a book or journal before it’s published - they’re checking accuracy, impartiality, and a good method-ology. It’s a good marker of quality.

Look at the date it was published.
