– Member based, volunteer driven professional trade
organization
– Provides the best opportunities for the world’s
measurement science professionals to network and
exchange information, to promote measurement
education and skill development and to develop a
means to resolve measurement challenges
– Open to any organization or individual with an interest
in the science of measurement

History
• 1961 – Organization was formed as The National
Conference of Standards Laboratories
• Sponsored by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards
(NBS)
• William Wildhack from NBS was first Liaison
Representative

• 1964 - NCSL was collaborating with other
organizations such as the Instrument Society of
America (ISA) and the Precision Measurement
Association (PMA)
• 1974 – Membership opened to non-US organizations
• 1990 – Instrumental in communicating and
disseminating information on the changes to the SI
volt and ohm in 1990
• 2000 – Changed name to
NCSL International
