Be sure a copy of the student friendly rubric for grade 2 is available to all students when they are writing their responses as well as when they are evaluating prompts. Model the extended response format frequently so students become comfortable with the process. Talking about what they did and whey they did it promotes retention of information. 2nd Grade Answer Key

Students should write out their answers to show computation, to show what they did to solve the problem and why they did it. Use the state scoring rubric to evaluate student work. It is a good idea to evaluate prompts with teammates so you can share ideas.

What follows is the numeric answer only.

September: Party Shoes 42 shoes October: Library Books Yolanda has 8 books, Lucas has 4 books November: Making Pattern Blocks Blue December: Football Helmets 4 more helmets

January: Making Numbers The 5 and 6 should be in the ten’s place and the 2 and 4 should be in the one’s place in any combination. The sum would be 116. February: Ruben’s Coins 1 quarter, 1 dime, 1 nickel March: Caps for Sale Gray April: Crayon Boxes Blue 8/16 or ½ May: Playground Fence 28 yards

Grade 2 “Student – Friendly” Mathematics Scoring Rubric Score Level (How many points

do you earn?)

Mathematical Knowledge: (Do you know it?)

Strategic Knowledge: (How do you plan?)

Explanation: (Can you explain it?)

4 I get the right answer I use the right label I use math words There are no math mistakes

I find all the important parts of the problem

I show a good plan I show all of the steps

I did to solve the problem

I write what I did and why I did it

I explain my drawings in words

3 I do the problem with small mistakes I find most of the important parts of the problem

I show most of my steps

I write most of what I did

I write a little about why I did it

I explain most of my drawings

2 I make big mistakes I give part of the answer

I find some of the important parts of the problem

I show some of my steps

I write some about what I did or why but not both

I explain some of my drawing

1 I try to do the problem, but I don’t know how to do it

I find almost no important parts of the problem

I show almost none of my steps

I write or draw something that doesn’t go with my answer

I write an answer that is not clear

0 I don’t try to do the problem I show no steps I don’t write anything

Math Scoring Rubric Tri 1 Prompt: Making Pattern Blocks Grade:2

Scoring Level

Mathematical Knowledge Strategic Knowledge Explanation

4 Correct answer. Clearly labeled Blue , Blue Blocks 2 Blue blocks Labeled picture

Clear and complete strategy process clearly seen Labeled diagram

Clearly explains process used Tells WHAT was done and WHY each step was done

3 Minor math errors Incorrect or missing label

Clear strategy, mostly complete Minor missing information on diagram

Clearly explains process used Tells WHAT was done and begins to appropriately explain WHY each step was done

2 Some understanding Major math errors Correct color – wrong number of blocks Wrong color- correct number of blocks

Clear strategy, but not necessarily effective or appropriate Blocks are drawn, but no color indicated

Some explanation of the process Tells how or why but not both or only uses inappropriate whys.(Ex: I did it because I had to)

1 Limited understanding Answer was attempted

Unclear or unrelated strategy, inappropriate Minimal or unclear explanation of the process Does not match work shown

0 No answer attempted No apparent strategy No written explanation of the solution process is provided

Math Scoring Rubric Tri 2 Prompt: Rueben’s Coins Grade: 2

Scoring Level

Mathematical Knowledge Strategic Knowledge Explanation

4 Correct answer. Clearly labeled Correct coins: Q,D,N

Clear and complete strategy process clearly seen Number model is shown correctly with correct value (Ex.: 25 + 10 + 5 = $0.40 or Q + D + N = $0.40)

Clearly explains process used Tells WHAT was done and WHY each step was done

3 Minor math errors One wrong coin or value

Clear strategy, mostly complete Coins are shown correctly, but added incorrectly Wrong number of coins are used, but correct total

Clearly explains process used Tells WHAT was done and begins to appropriately explain WHY each step was done

2 Some understanding Major math errors Correct value, wrong number of coins Correct number of coins, wrong value

Clear strategy, but not necessarily effective or appropriate Coins are shown but with no addition evident

Some explanation of the process Tells how or why but not both or only uses inappropriate whys.(Ex: I did it because I had to)

1 Limited understanding Answer was attempted

Unclear or unrelated strategy, inappropriate

Minimal or unclear explanation of the process Does not match work shown

0 No answer attempted No apparent strategy No written explanation of the solution process is provided

Math Scoring Rubric Tri 3 Prompt: Playground Fence Grade: 2

Scoring Level

Mathematical Knowledge Strategic Knowledge Explanation

4 Correct answer. Clearly labeled 28 yards

Clear and complete strategy process clearly seen 4 + 4 + 10 +10 = 28 yards

Clearly explains process used Tells WHAT was done and WHY each step was done

3 Minor math errors Incorrect answer that is close, with correct label

Clear strategy, mostly complete Number sentence is missing data and results in an incorrect answer, but correct strategy (Ex.: 4 + 4 + 10 = 18 yards)

Clearly explains process used Tells WHAT was done and begins to appropriately explain WHY each step was done

2 Some understanding Major math errors Close answer, no label or incorrect label

Clear strategy, but not necessarily effective or appropriate Shows addition of 2 numbers ( 4 + 10)

Some explanation of the process Tells how or why but not both or only uses inappropriate whys.(Ex: I did it because I had to)

1 Limited understanding Unclear or unrelated strategy, inappropriate Minimal or unclear explanation of the process Does not match work shown

0 No answer attempted No apparent strategy No written explanation of the solution process is provided
