How to Listen When listening to music it is important that you start to pick out both the musical and technological characteristics. This is as important for reviewing your own work as it is for when you are listening to and analysing professional recordings. Once you start to hear the production in music you will discover that much more is happening than just instruments and voices. Being able to identify musical, recording and production techniques could give you inspiration for your own work and in turn will improve your listening abilities. As a guide, try to focus on the following areas when you are at the research stage in your tasks:

Genre / Style

Title of the song / piece

Performers / Band

Year in which it was recorded / performed

Line-up of the band

Main musical features o Melody / Harmony o Rhythm / Tempo o Texture / Structure / Form o Timbre / Dynamics

Background to the track (cultural & musical)

Recording technology used
