COACHING PERMITYoungpeoplewillexperiencethepositiveoutcomesofathleticparticipationonlyiftheyhaveaqualifiedcoach.Awell-qualifiedcoachknowshowtoplandynamicpracticesessions,teachessoundfundamentalswithgoodlearn-ingprogressions,andplans trainingprogramsappropriate for thesport. Successfulcoachescommunicatewiththe athletes effectively and understand the kind of positive motivational approaches that result in achievement. Athleteswhoreceivegoodcoachingwillalsobeinjuredlessfrequently.Asaconsequence,theywillhavemoreopportunities to experience the excitement and receive the positivevaluesofathleticcompetition,whileperformingat their best possible level.

To become certified a coach must complete the requirements for a NDHSAA Coaching Permit. Those re-quirements are:• Complete the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Fundamental of Coaching on-line

course or have completed the course while in college within the past two years.• Complete the NFHS Concussion Management Course.• Complete a First Aid Course• BecertifiedinCardiopulmonaryResuscitation(CPR)andintheuseofAutomatedExternalDefibrillator(AED)

every two years.• Thecoachingpermitmustberenewedeveryfiveyears(exceptfortheCPRrequirements).

HOW DO YOU GET YOUR PERMITYour activities director or high school principal will collect the necessary information for each of their school’s respectivecoachesandsubmittheNDHSAACoachesPermitFormindicatingthecoach(es)hascompletedallthenecessaryrequirementsforthepermit.UponreceivingtheinformationtheNDHSAAwillpostallcertifiedcoachesontheNDHSAAwebsiteandforwardthelisttotheNorthDakotaHighSchoolCoachesAssociation(NDHSCA).TheNDHSCAwillthencompleteacertificate(Permit)suitableforframingandsendittotherespectivecoachorschool.

WHAT ABOUT COACHING MINORS?CoacheswhohavegraduatedfromcollegewithacoachingminorwhichincludeFundamentalsofCoaching,FirstAid,CPRandConcussionManagement,willbegivenaCoachingPermitifthecoachhasgraduatedfromcollegewithin four years of the application for the permit.

RENEWAL• Torenewthecoachingpermit,eachcoachmustbecertifiedinCPR,ConcussionManagement,up-to-date on all appropriate rules clinics and complete at least two of the requirements below.

• Requirements for re-certification for theNDHSAACoaching Permit: (Must complete two of the follow-ingwithinfiveyearsofreceivingcoachingpermit)

• AttendoneNDHighSchoolCoachesAssociationConventionsoverfiveyears.

• Completefivehoursoftrainingatanational,stateor local coaching clinic.

• Complete one sport-specific course from theNFHS.

• Complete one of the elective courses from NFHS: EngagingEffectivelywithParents,TeachingSportSkills, Teaching and Modeling Behavior, or TheNCAA Eligibility Course.

FAQ’S• What will coaching certification cost? The costfortheFundamentalsofCoachingis$35,thecostforafirstaidcourseisapproximately$45perpersonon-line,butmaybelessexpensivelocally,CPRcertificationisapproximately$40perperson,and the Concussion Management course is free. Theapproximatecostis$120percoach.Severalschool districts already require coaching certifi-cationandprovidea$50or$100stipendto theircoach for completing the program in addition to providing the funds for the courses.

• What if a coach does not complete the certifi-cation? The respective school and the coach will receiveawarningforthefirstoffense,asecondof-fensewill result in a $200 fine for the school foreach violating coachand$200 for each violatingcoach.

Beginning the fall of 2013 all coaches who work with student-athletes in grades 9-12 must be certified.
