en Davis Senior, Rosalynn Kowal, was honored with the Indiana Career and Technical Education Award of

Excellence by the Department of Education at the Indiana Government Building South on February 8th. Rosalynn

has compiled quite an impressive resume throughout her high school tenure. Completing pathways in Precision

Machining Technology, Project Lead The Way Engineering, and earning certifications in Advanced Manufacturing,

Rosalynn has demonstrated a strong interest and

high levels of achievement in career and technical

education. So much so that earlier this year she was

invited to testify to the Indiana Graduations

Pathways Committee advocating the value and

impact of career education. Additionally, Rosalynn

serves as an ambassador to her Area 31 programs,

has lead robotics programs at the Boys and Girls

Club, is active in 4-H and FIRST robotics, and

participates in both SkillsUSA and National Tooling

and Machining Association student competitions.

She also boasts a 4.78 GPA and is in the prestigious

Top 30 of her graduating class at Ben Davis. We are

very proud of Rosalynn and the honor she received!

ongratulations to Criminal Justice instructor, Mark Gullion, for being selected by the Speedway Post 500, the l1th

district, and the Department of Indiana of the American Legion as their nominee for the 2017-18 Educator of the

Year. Mark was Area 31’s first instructor for the Criminal Justice program and has served in that role for the past

eleven years. He has developed a curriculum that provides students with the opportunity to earn up to twelve college

credits in four post-secondary courses. Additionally, Mark has incorporated a variety of crime scene investigation

labs, and an abundance of guest speakers from law enforcement, the justice system, and government offices. He truly

is passionate about designing a meaningful and exciting experience for his

students.

Mark is committed to consistently refining his instructional practice to implement

innovative and research-based techniques. Mark has coordinated with math

instructors to develop real-world crash reconstruction lessons that integrate

mathematics in a way that is relevant to students. He has adopted a variety of

active learning structures that allow students to be at the center of the lesson.

We are very proud of Mark and wish him the best of luck when the recipient is

announced at the Department of Indiana Convention on July 14th. The honoree

will move on as the state of Indiana’s nominee for the national award.
