1943–1944

At this point in the war, there was little doubt as to who was on the offensive in the Pacific. Large Navy task forces anchored by the new Essex class carriers with Hellcats and Avengers were moving steadily from island to island . . . the Gilberts, the Marshalls, the Mariana’s . . . toward the Japanese homeland.

F-35 Lightening II Joint Strike Fighter, F/A-18 Super Hornet, and EA-18G Growler. Her portfolio also includes Information Operations and Electronic Attack (IO/EA) programs, the Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle program and the company’s National Irregular Warfare Center. These programs keep her traveling from coast to coast.

Pat joined the company in 2003 as VP to lead the IO/EA business and has risen to sector Vice President of Aerospace Systems’ former Battle Management and Engagement Systems Division. Pat began her defense industry career with Defense Logistics Agency in Garden City, NY and continued at BAE Systems in Greenlawn, NY, leading it’s electronic identification/display systems/antenna systems as VP and general manager. She is the recipient of the Navy League’s 2012 Chester W. Nimitz Award for Leadership, the LISTnet 2010 LISA Leadership Award, and LISTnet’s 2006 Diamond Award.

Rounding off her distinguished career, she is currently the chairman of the Town of Babylon Planning Board, is the first woman to chair the Planning and Industrial Development boards, and serves on the boards of the Long Island Association and Farmingdale College Foundations. Previously, she served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Suffolk Community College. Pat has been named to Long Island’s 50 Most Influential Women Hall of Fame in 2007 and won the Town of Babylon Women in Government Award in 2006.

Pat began her update of the company’s status by proudly announcing that she attended the NATO Summit in Chicago and while there signed a $1.7 billion contract with NATO for their new Wide Area Ground Surveillance System which will be run out of the Melbourne, Florida, Joint Stars facility. She then reviewed all the other programs emphasizing the longevity of the programs like the 50 year Hawkeye evolution which presently will provide up to 75 E-2D versions of the most advanced electronics to the Navy and, in the future, to the Arab Emirates. Similarly, Joint Stars celebrated 20 tremendously successful years last year while the EA-6A has long ago, transitioned into many versions of the EA-6B now used by the US Marines while the Navy is using our EA-18G Growlers that will soon, incorporate the next generation of electronic jammers.

130 attendees enjoyed a nice luncheon at the Crest Hollow. President Marion Abbott called the meeting to order at 1:30PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sergeant-at-Arms Barbara Major after which the President called for a moment of silence for deceased members and for our Armed Forces throughout the world.

Marion introduced the highly anticipated meeting with Pat McMahon, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Northrop Grumman’s Military Aircraft Systems. Pat oversees major programs, including the E-2 Hawkeye, B-2 Stealth Bomber,E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System,

Pat also described the Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) unmanned aircraft, which is our future and will have its first flight this year. Two videos were then presented that showed some unique areas of interest. The first showed a restoration program on an old US Air Force/Grumman Albatross using spare parts from other old aircraft. The restoration, which was accomplished at Northrop Grumman’s Palmdale, CA plant, brought the aircraft to full flight operability. Interviews with restorers pointed out the original aircraft’s durability and overall solid mechanical design. The second video was an overview of a new program for the Army using an inflated unmanned airship that will be deployed in a battle zone to provide complex surveillance of the battlefield. Design and construction is at a Lakehurst, NJ facility.

Pat expressed her thanks for all the bygone efforts of Grummanites, efforts that have led to the company’s present outstanding ranking with the military. In the halls of the Pentagon, the company is still affectionately called, the “Ironworks”.

Pat provided the Club with two US Navy Aircraft publications that were raffled off after her presentation. An additional book was provided that will reside in the Retiree Office for all to see, so drop in for a visit and to see the book.

The Club appreciated Pat’s wonderful and informative presentation and will contribute to her favorite charity.

Committee ReportsScholarship Fund Treasurer Harry Daum read the Fund’s report, which was accepted as read. Harry thanked everyone for their generosity for the Scholarship donations this past year, which, along with the sponsorship funds from the Club and the BFCU, will permit ten $2000 awards to be given to deserving relatives of Grummanites in June. This year’s applications are presently being evaluated and the awards will be presented at the June 27th luncheon. Following his report, Marion presented him with a check for the one full award that the Club will sponsor annually, starting this year. Remember, these award winners are your relatives, so support the Fund in the future.

Scholarship Luncheon - Betty Bohlander: The Luncheon will be at the Crest Hollow on June 27. $30pp. Will feature Roast Beef, Shrimp Oreganato, and Penne Pomodoro. For details and the Luncheon Reservation Form, see page 19.

CALIFORNIA / Golden West

Next Meeting: 6/21 (3rd Thursday)

Our May meeting was held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles building in Oxnard, with lunch starting at 11AM, and the business meeting at Noon.President Fred Syrett opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. VP John Torkelsen offered a prayer for our country, our armed forces, and for members and their families who are ill or have had family loses.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Ashman’s wife, Clo. A church service was held on May 1, in Newbury Park, with Grumman retirees attending.

Today’s program was twofold. First, our own Dick Bartick gave a very informative talk regarding the new car imports and exports out of Port of Hueneme (pronounced: Why-knee-me), where Dick works part-time. Port Hueneme is just east of Point Mugu Naval Base.

Very large ships with13 decks, which can hold 7000 to 9000 vehicles, come in and out of the port. Imports to the U.S. include the Volvo (Sweden), Mitsubishi and Suzuki (Japan), Jaguar, Rover, and Austen Martin (England), Ford Transit Vans (Turkey), and the Miles Electric Car (China). Before 2008, 136,000 vehicles were imported via Port Hueneme compared to 31,000 vehicles imported last year, which is an indication of the current state of the U.S. economy.

Exports to China include Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, all made in the U.S. or Canada.

Our second speaker was Grumman retiree John Erwin, who worked on the F-14 weapons system development while he was in the Engineering Department at Point Mugu. John was aboard the USS Enterprise as a naval electronics technician during the first deployment of F-14s on the Enterprise.

John gave a comprehensive power-point presentation, which included a description of the workings of the ship from the flight deck on down to the nuclear power plants with pictures of the various aircraft carried by Enterprise in her 50 years of service.

Thanks, John, for a great program. Thanks, also, to Craig Kaston and Paul Aanerud for the power-point job.

Our Annual Family Picnic will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012, beginning at 11AM, at the Conejo Park in Thousand Oaks. We expect a good attendance as this will be our last chance to be together until our September meeting.

50/50 winners: Don Coler, Joe Russo, and Ken Korsberg.

Side Note: On the morning of May 8, our Golden West meeting date, I was at my desk reviewing some notes regarding the program. My phone rang just two hours before our meeting. It was Bob Watkins from Florida /Treasure Coast Chapter. He had read in the Golden West Minutes of the April meeting that we had discussed the upcoming retirement of USS Enterprise. Bob told me that George Skurla and he were aboard the Enterprise for the F-14 deployment for a full week. There were 47 Grummanites supporting the effort, with Joe McArdle as Team Leader. How did Bob know that I could use that information at that very time?

Next Meeting: June 21, 11AM, at Conejo Park in Thousand Oaks By: Paul Aanerud, Sec’y, and John Torkelsen, V.P.****************************************************

CALIFORNIA / San Diego

On May 24, twenty retirees and guests got together at one of our Club’s favorite places, the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant, where everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch.

President Cliff Robinson welcomed Tom Whitehead who recently retired as E2/C2 West Coast Project Manager at North Island NAS. In recent years, Tom also worked at Point Mugu Naval Air Station and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

The lucky 50/50 winners were Eleanor Kirvin and Bobby Stalter.

Bobby & Roxie Stalter recently returned from a cruise to Honduras and the Grand Cayman Islands. Bobby said the scuba diving was awesome. The diving included drift diving, which is the most relaxing and calm form of diving where the diver is carried by currents caused by the tides. They’re already looking forward to their next diving adventure.

Several folks are on the sick list: Jim Bartels’ wife, Betz; Sy Rosenberg; and Charlie Stenzel. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

Celebrating birthdays in April and May were Marge Cargill, Ken Crane, Vincent Holder, Jean Ketcham, Josy Overdorff, Mitzi Reika, Santi Salvi, James Vollaro, Ernie Von der Heyden, and Lou Wilson.

Wedding anniversary good wishes go out to Ken & Pauline Crane, Ray & Kay Hanlon, Bill & Vonnie Jolly, Mike & Sherry Lossick, Bob & Josy Overdorff, Bill & Nancy Roeckl, Charlie & Eleanor Stenzel, Billy & Kay Watson, and Lou & Maryam Wilson. Congratulations to all!

Mark your calendars now for the annual picnic on Saturday, September 29, at Mills Park, Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

We did not have a 50/50 Club drawing this month.

Nancy has had only one response to her suggestion of a change in our meeting day. Please let her know by e-mail if moving to the second Wednesday will have a negative affect on you. If we do change, it won’t go into effect until Jan. 2013. Thanks.

Please remember: we will NOT meet again until October 2012. Chapter members will receive a reminder just prior to that date.

FLORIDA/ First Coast President Fred Bauer welcomed the twenty-five members who showed up for our spring picnic at Treaty Park. The weather was clear with a good chance for afternoon showers. After the Pledge and an opening prayer, we took part in enjoying each other’s company while noshing on snacks plus hot dogs and hamburgers from the grills. Thanks to our grillers Rich Bier, Bob Rathje, and Pete Foster, and to everyone else who helped to make the day enjoyable for all.

One memory was watching, from the Calverton Flight Test Center, Chuck Sewell’s test flights of the X29 (forward swept wing) aircraft , which took place in California.

Clem stated that the field trip to the Art of the Olympians’ Museum with lunch at the French Connection had been cancelled due to construction in the downtown Fort Myers area. We agreed to reschedule the trip to November.

Special events we helped celebrate were: · Tom Cummiskey’s 20th year retired from

GAC. · Clem Moors, Barbara Sidaras, Jon Gold and

George Daly upcoming birthdays.· Summer wedding anniversaries of Barbara

& Bob Sidaras, Mary Ellen & Jon Gold, and Beverly & Lou Urban.

Clem led the group in a discussion about donating money to charitable organizations. Some of the groups to be considered were:

(a) PAWS for Patriots – service dogs for veterans. Marilyn Labell gathered information on this organization. A member of PAWS would like to visit us and talk about the organization and how they help the community.(b) Sheriff’s Youth Ranch - Tom Cummiskey asked for the group to again consider it as we did last year.

George Daly suggested using the treasury funds to defray costs of future events. We decided to table the discussion until our next meeting.

Janet and George Daly will host the January 2013 meeting at Tara Woods. They requested we bring our suggestions for the menu to the next meeting.

Some fond memories were shared by all. Clem showed her father’s plaque from the LM program (Launch of Apollo, December 7, 1972). Jim Hodder passed around a list of the first 100 GAC employees.

50/50 winners: Jim Hodder, Barbara Roland, and Mary Cummiskey.

Next Meetings: Oct 9 and Nov 13, at the Golden Corral in Punta Gorda. Meeting and lunch at Noon.

Sixty-five members and guests gathered at the Suntree Country Club for our May 16 meeting. The Country Club and its staff once again provided a sumptuous feast. Acting-president Peggy Graefe led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, which was followed by Ed Romano’s usual thoughtful invocation.

After lunch, President Peggy Graefe introduced guest speaker Joe Stickler. Joe is a 1958 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He served primarily on submarines, commanding two. He also served as commander of the Auburn University NROTC Program, and commander of the Navy’s largest recruiting area, area #4. His last duty station was command of the Navy Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS.

Joe has now formed his fourth non-profit, “Helping Seniors of Brevard County”. This program is designed to assist seniors in finding out what is available out there to help them.

He spoke about the television program he has. He mentioned the sixty new half hour programs that will address individual senior needs. These programs can be accessed thru their website www.hsobc.com. Joe also hosts a weekly radio program and has a weekly newspaper column both called “Focus On Seniors”. His mission is to inform the public that the committees and the people overseeing the funds that are there to support Medicare and Medicaid do not have any idea what they are voting on. When they make random cuts to these programs, they can’t foresee all the ramifications their decisions will have on the Medicare and Medicaid programs. A brief question and answer period followed.

Meeting Minutes: A motion was made, seconded and passed to accept the minutes of the April meeting as published in the Newsletter.

Community Relations - Chet Emery: A get-well card was sent to Brian Masterson. Brian was able to attend the meeting.

Treasurer’s report - Bill Waldron: There are appropriate balances in both the general and scholarship funds.

Travel and Entertainment - Maureen Ayers: Diamond Tours has several trips of varying length available at reasonable prices. She specifically mentioned a three-day trip to St. Augustine, Amelia Island, and Jacksonville, FL. The price for three days and two nights is $280. She also mentioned a local three-day trip to Orlando, Arabian Knights and the several attractions for $275.

Historian report - George Graefe: restoration work is still proceeding on the vertical fin assembly for the B-57 British version of the Canberra bomber. The vertical fin assembly was constructed of wood. The B-57 was used extensively in the Viet Nam theatre. He also mentioned that, to honor the veterans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, the Valiant Air Command Museum is hosting a free open house for all Florida residents and military personnel.

There will be low-flyby, exhibits, a display of classic cars, and free parking. Bi-plane rides and food and drink will be available. Radio station 98.5 “The Beach” remote radio broadcast will be there on Saturday from Noon to 2PM. Come out and spin the prize wheel.

Scholarship: Today, Brandon Baxter and his mother Heidi visited us. Brandon is our 2011 George Skurla scholarship winner. A photo was taken of Brandon receiving his award of the scholarship plaque, presented by Acting President Peggy Graefe. Brandon expressed his gratitude at receiving the scholarship and the many doors it will help open toward his career. His mother expressed her gratitude to our Club for helping her son achieve his goal.

FLORIDA / Treasure Coast

On a gorgeous, sunny day, the Treasure Coast Chapter met at Manero’s Restaurant in Palm City, Florida. Our May meeting was called to order by President Nancy Schaefer, who welcomed everyone and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Larry Reiger recited a beautiful blessing, and a fabulous lunch was enjoyed by all.

Larry reported that Harold Prague was ill. There were several deaths this month. We extend our condolences to the families of Dave Craig, Jack Cabre, and Roy Bishop.

Our beloved Bob Watkins was not in attendance today as he is in the hospital having a battery of tests. On a good note, Mike Trax is getting along better, as is Bob Heggie. George Gibson is considering moving back to our area; “come on down,” George!!!

In the absence of our Guest Speaker Coordinator Bob Watkins, Ken Tolve introduced Renay Rouse. Renay is the Public Information Officer for the Marin County Health Department. Her responsibilities are diverse as they include adult and child primary care, beach quality, and death and birth certification, to name a few. A major project of the office is a public health study of mercury and fish. We learned a lot about the local fish, the various levels of mercury

found in each, and how the study was conducted. However, eating fish IS healthy. We just have to ask ourselves what type of fish we are eating and how often. We learned which fish are higher in mercury content. Renay made available an informative booklet that also contained some great recipes. A Q&A session followed.

On October 3, we will join the Space Coast chapter in an event at Sebastian River Inlet. Cost is $16. We do not have a date as yet for the IRSC Center for Innovation tour.

A wonderful trip is planned for December 8. We will attend the Fort Lauderdale Christmas Pageant. It will also be a scholarship fund raising event. The cost is $80, which includes the price of the bus and your entrance to the pageant. This event is limited to the first 47 people to sign up and pay. We will leave at 9AM and return approx. 6PM.

Birthdays and anniversary wishes and songs from the group went to Connie & Walt Ludwig (59 years married) and birthday boys, Gene Rathgeber and Vince Dibble.

Anne Kitloski was welcomed as our guest.

There were several 50/50 winners, and Rich Bergstol won the walnut pound cake. All proceeds go to the Scholarship Fund.

Next Meeting: June 21, at 11:30AM.

There will be no meetings in July and August.

President Nancy also asked that we think about new officers.

As advertised, we kicked off our 2012 season at the Fullerton Inn at Chester, VT, on a beautiful May spring day. Fourteen members and guests enjoyed the fine food and sunny private room, set up by our long time innkeepers Nancy & Brett.

After President Bill Egner led the Pledge of Allegiance, Edie Clark delivered the invocation. Bud and Edie were celebrating Bud’s 91st birthday, along with their son, Merrill, who was visiting from Texas.

Secretary/Treasurer Phil Hodge and his wife, Bunny, recently returned from a 3-month southern vacation with their Morgan horses. Phil, as usual, confirmed

our fiscal solvency and relayed messages from some of our members who were unable to attend the meeting.

Next Luncheon: June 14, at Lagasse’s in Rutland, VT. (Please note: the previously announced Quechee, VT venue will be deferred to another date, due to a potential traffic problem stemming from the Quechee Balloon Festival, which begins on June 15th.) Also, we have cancelled our date at the Sirloin Saloon in Rutland, VT, since they are no longer in business!! We will discuss the remainder of our 2012 schedule at the June luncheon.

New Jersey / Garden State Chapter

Our May 15 meeting, held at the Lakehurst Diner, was called to order by President Larsen at 1PM with seventeen members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and was followed by a moment of silence for our sick and departed members and for our service men and women.

The previous meeting’s Minutes and the Treasurer’s Report were accepted as read.

May Birthdays: Gloria Larsen (2nd) and Marie Punturo (7th).

May Anniversaries: George & Ann Kramer (#67 on the 13th) and Joe& Renee Caldwell (#54 on the 5th).

Sunshine Report – President Larsen is back and said he was cancer free. Ann Kramer is still in rehab recuperating from pneumonia. She has been ill for over two months. Lorraine Grizlo called and said Les is the same. Gloria Larsen read a note from the Frankels.

Old Business – Ron Kerr wanted to clear up a misstatement in the March, 2012 Retiree Newsletter, in the meeting minutes of the Bethpage chapter. The article talked about the Retiree Club being contacted by The National Public Broadcasting

Station of Japan. They wanted to interview a few Grumman engineers for anecdotal information to use in a short video presentation regarding Apollo 11 (LM-4?). Ron Kerr was contacted because he had knowledge of a LM Guidance Computer Repair Module.

The Bethpage Chapter article said: “[The Japan PBS person who contacted the Club] saw a comment by Ron Kerr, in our July 2011 Newsletter-on-line, detailing Ron’s contingent mission to build a LM Guidance Computer within a month of the Apollo 11 launch, saving the timing of the launch date.” Actually, the LM Guidance Computer was a relatively large unit that weighed about 20 lbs, while Ron’s Repair Module was a small device that weighed about four ounces and was external to the Computer.

There was no new business.

Ways & Means – Everyone present received a prize.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:10PM.

NORTH CAROLINAEastern Carolina Chapter

Thirty-four members and guests met on May 9th and enjoyed a wonderful day, delicious food, and great service at the “Carolina Grill” in New Bern. Our Thanks to Program Directors Bill and Mary Willemsen.

President Rudy Wiehl welcomed everyone then Ken Gruebel led the Pledge of Allegiance and gave an inspirational invocation. Al Northrup brought a beautiful picture of the F-11 that was renovated for New Bern. Doris and Terry Walker’s son enlarged and enhanced the background. Al told members if anyone would like one a copy, he would take orders. Rudy also passed around information regarding Northrop Grumman’s new project, the MQ4C - BAMS, a drone plane. BAMS stands for Broad Area Maritime Surveillance - Unmanned Aircraft System. Rudy’s daughter works in Bethpage and sent him the series of pictures and info about the aircraft.

Bill Willemsen passed around a roll of brown tape, asking if anyone knew what it was used for. Not too many of us knew the answer, but my 93 yr. old mother, Rosemary Daidone, whose first husband, my Dad, Vinnie Schneider, worked for Grumman 28 yrs., did. When she was 17 yrs. old and just moved to Lindenhurst from the city, she got a job at Liberty Aircraft. Her job was to sew the seams on the wings of aircraft using the sailcloth tape brought in by Bill. Al Northrup told us that, after the sailcloth, the industry switched to Irish linen and grade A fabric.

Bill also related stories about how Grumman impacted his life even when he was 7 years old, when he was in high school, and even when he was older. He lived in the 100 houses in Lindenhurst as a child. Those homes were built in the 40s, way out of town; locals called them the “haunted houses” because there were no other buildings in the area

at the time. Bill told some jokes since our resident comedian, Tom Schroder, forgot his papers and the planes he was to auction. He promised to bring two of them to next month’s meeting.

Bob Lamberson gave the Treasurer’s report in Fred Reynolds’ absence. Fortunately, we’re still in the black.

Bob also mentioned that the Club is required to make charitable donations each year. He asked members to suggest organizations in New Bern, Pine Knoll Shores, and Hampstead. The Club would then vote on where to send the donations.

Rudy suggested that the Club give a gift to Susan Moffat-Thomas, last month’s speaker. The motion was approved.

Sunshine sent a card to Doris Walker, who recently had an operation.

Rudy told members:(a) We still need a volunteer for President.(b) Joe Mele will stay as Vice-President.(c) Fred Reynolds will remain Treasurer(d) Dottie Karika will continue as Secretary. (e) Rudy will take care of our June 12 meeting

at the “Clamdiggers.” in Pine Knoll Shores, our last meeting ‘til September.

(f) Program Directors - for Sept 11: Joe Mele; for Oct 9: Marty Olstad; for Nov. 13: Jim Karika and Tom Schroder; and for December: Rudy Wiehl.

Wes Johnson called the 50/50 winners: Joan Messina (who donated winnings to the Club), Doris Walker, Bob Lamberson, Nora Reichert, and Ken Gruebel.

Joe Mele presented Organ Music CDs to Bob Lamberson and Tom Schroder for their dedication to the Club.

May Birthdays: John Peoples - 5/18; Ken Gruebel - 5/18; Pat Johnson - 5/20; Dolores Brown - 5/25; and Dick Guarino - 5/28.May Anniversaries: Walter & Joan Muench - 5/1; Jim & Dottie Karika - 5/7; Stan & Arlene Ramsden - 5/9; Leo & Katherine Torrens - 5/18; Mike & Janet Savastio - 5/24; Tony & Carol Peralta - 5/30; Larry

& Diane Spallazani - 5/30; and John & Ada Peoples.

Rudy thanked everyone for coming and wished us all a safe home.

PENNSYLVANIA

Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter

May 17 was a beautiful, sunny day here in Northeast Pennsylvania. Eight brave souls drove to Kay’s for our monthly meeting. They were Charlie Teufert, Fred & Alberta Rademacher, Bob Zupp, Bill Herling, Sal Deluca, Ed & Marianne Sparkowski. Two spouses and six GAC. Meeting was opened at 1216 hours with a salute to the flag led by Marianne Sparkowski. Chaplain Edward Sparkowski led Grace. Treasurer’s report was short: we have money. Secretary Sparkowski reported that John & Eileen Saggese have rejoined the Club. Welcome Back, John and Eileen. Treasurer Rademacher asked if anyone needs the scholarship information. No One responded. We had lunch and some very interesting conversation. Alberta Rademacher suggested we should try to get some speakers to the meeting, which might spur more interest in the Club. Sparky said he could probably get some people, but with the low attendance, he would not want to schedule a speaker, and then have a poor showing at the meeting, and embarrass the Club.

Sickness- Jeff Lee was going to come to the meeting, but tripped and fell, and was not up to coming. - Bettie Deluca recovering from a touch of the flu.

For members of the Club who wonder why they are not listed in the Birthday/Anniversary Announcements each month, it is because I do not have your information. There are quite a few members for whom I do not have anything, except a mailing address and an e-mail address. 50X50 winner was Treasurer Fred Rademacher. Sparky started to check the by-laws to see if Treasurers are eligible to win the 50X50. Next Meeting: June 21, at Noon, at Kay’s Restaurant, Route 191, in Lake Ariel.

An open invitation to all Club members: if you are in the area on the 3rd Thursday of the month, stop in for lunch and say, “Hello”. We would like to see you all. The Grumman Family – WWII1943–1944

(continued from page one)

The Hellcat was now the Navy’s star front line fighter. However, the Grumman Wildcat’s record of heroically stopping the Japanese advance and being the platform from which Joe Foss became the Marine’s WWII “Ace of Aces” etched its place in naval aviation history. The FM-2 Wildcats continued to play a key role from escort carriers in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters for the remainder of the war.

Grumman’s culture of persistence was demonstrated on November 3, 1943 when the XF7F-1 Tigercat completed its maiden flight with Bob Hall in the cockpit. This twin- engine fighter evolved from the canceled Skyrocket project. It had both phenomenal firepower and performance, but was too late to see combat.

The Company continued to seek ways to motivate and reward its workers. In October 1943, the government’s War Labor Board approved Grumman’s “Production Incentive Bonus Plan”, an industry first. The Plan proposed the payment of a bonus to every company employee based on the savings that could be realized by increased production, and computed on the basis of airframe pounds per hour. The Plan worked beautifully. The company’s production ratio (pounds per work hour) soon became the highest in industry and employees received between 25% and 30% more than their regular pay every quarter. Concurrently, the price of Hellcats dropped approximately $15,000 per aircraft and was approximately half the price of the Corsair. In 1944 alone, Grumman saved the Navy over $127 million on the overall cost of 3,500 Hellcats.

Under the leadership of Jake Swirbul, Grumman again set another industry benchmark with the establishment of a non-contributory pension program. An employee with five years of service qualified for retirement benefits that matured when the employee reached age 50 and had 20 years of service. A formula based on longevity and salary established the amount.

Christmas 1943 came to Grumman with all the powerful emotion that the stress of the times and the Yuletide season could evoke. The Grumman Family, now numbering 25,094, decorated the work areas with small Christmas trees, and received their bonus checks and turkeys personally from Leroy, Jake, and other Grumman dignitaries.

As the New Year approached, they began the task of dismantling the trees, putting away the ornaments, and returning once again to the mission of producing military aircraft. This year, however, during the dismantling process, a small note was discovered tied to one of the branches. Written in a child’s hand, the note wished the finder a warm and happy Christmas. The note had been sent from a village in northern Canada. The Grumman Welfare Department, at the request of Production Dept, personnel, contacted a parish priest in the child’s hometown. It was learned that she came from a very small family headed by a father who had been disabled in the war. The response was spontaneous. A huge collection of clothing, toys, and money from the Production Department was dispatched to the priest, who distributed the New Year’s gifts to the neediest families in the area. Special parcels were directed to the small child who caused it all to happen.

The Grumman Family also had a huge heart.
