FileVault2, which you have adopted, encrypts the internal hard drive of your laptop. Let’s address the other memory devices you might have. BACKUP DRIVES I strongly recommend that you have two (or at least one) backup strate- gies to protect your in- formation in the eventual failure of the internal hard drive of your computer. You can’t backup the in- ternal drive; that provides no protection. You must use external hard drives. And they also are possible targets of thieves. The minimum backup plan is to use Apple’s Time Machine software to reg- ularly write the informa- tion that changed in your computer to an EHD. The software creates a timeline history of your computer on the EHD. You can go back months to recover a data file of that date. The second backup strategy is to regularly use software (such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) to create an exact copy of the in- ternal hard drive on an EHD. This copy can be a bootable drive. That means that you can con- nect the EHD to another Mac computer and work as if it were your normal computer. You can achieve that captivating decorby looking at a roomon different levels:

■ eye-level accessories, including art,mirrors andwall hangings;

■ midlevel elements, including accentpillows, vases, collectibles and items thatuse color and texture; and

■ floor-leveloccasionalpiecesandrugsthat define the space.

“When displaying a collection of simi-lar objects,whether on a tabletop,mantle,bookshelf orfloor, group themtogether asopposed to scattered about,” Lovett said.“It creates an interesting ‘focal’ area andgives the collected pieces more impor-tance than each piecewould have alone.”

Whenitcomes towhat isinandwhat isout, thesky isthe limit. Whatever makesyoufeelhappyandcomfort-able is thebest trendforyouand your family. With thatsaid, let me give you a fewthoughtsonwhatdesignerssee as notable styles thesedays.

Many men work out oftheir own homes, so thosehomes have been designedwithamoresoberfeel inthefurnishings—more usefulthancute.Menwhoworkathome are getting more in-volved in the decor, so youareboundtoseemore“mancaves,” media rooms andperhaps some great winerooms or in-home pubsin place of the traditionalfamilyroom.What’swrongwithgoing to theneighbor-hood pub each night with-outleavingyourownhome?The outdoor grill area willbemoreupscaleand larger.

Repurposed furnishingsand accessories are reallyin these days.Use a specialobjectinanewway,orbringit into a common space so

it can be see or used moreoften. This also brings inthe do-it-yourself element.Creativity is the key bothin repurposing and in do-it-yourself projects. Own-ers can take special pridein their finished projects,because the pieces have aspecialmeaning.

What about patterns?Stripes are definitely in,and theymixwellwith justabout any other pattern.Floralpatternsalsoarebackinstyle.Theylendaroman-tic touch to a roomand canbring on the feeling of per-petualholidays.Floralsandstripes are always good to-gether.

Brighter, saturated hues,brassmetalandlacqueralsohave regained the popular-

ity they held in the 1980sand ’90s. Gloss, shine, pol-ish and lacquer are boldlytaking a place in homes.

On the other side of thespectrum is the organiclook with warm, modernmaterials. Things such asslate, crackle-glazed tilesand irregular floors — oranything that looks hand-made— create a cozy, old-fashioned look.

What about the interiordesigner’s role? Today, thetrend seems to be hiringteams of designers. Onedoes the planning, anotherthe lighting, and anotherthe furnishings and acces-sories. All designers meetregularly to be sure every-thing goes smoothly andquickly and that all aspectsarewell coordinatedand insync.

So take your pick. Whatdo you like for your homelook?
