The NIB Neatishead, Irstead and Barton Turf Parish Magazine THE BENEFICE OF St BENEDICT The Parishes of Ashmanhaugh, Barton Turf, Beeston St Lawrence, Horning, Irstead and Neatishead From the Reverend Angela Smith The World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative. It is run under the motto ‘Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action’ and is celebrated annually in over 170 countries on the first Friday in March. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures and traditions in a yearly common Day of Prayer, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year. Through the World Day of Prayer, women are encouraged to become aware of the other countries and cultures and no longer live in isolation. They are also encouraged to take up the burdens of other people, to sympathise with the problems of other countries and cultures and pray with and for them. They are further encouraged to become aware of their talents and use them in the service of society. The World Day of Prayer aims to demonstrate that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence in the world. This years service on the theme ‘All God’s Creation is very good' has been prepared by the women of Suriname in South America and focuses on our care for the environment. Suriname is a beautiful country, boasting wonderful forests and mountains, and has great rivers with impressive rapids. It is a country rich with flowers and animals, and provides enough food for all. In this years service the women of Suriname urge us to cherish God's exquisite gift of Creation and to commit ourselves to caring for God's world responsibly, so that we may pass it on, unspoiled, to future generations. As we pray with and for the people of Suriname, we shall be part of a great wave of prayer encircling the globe - starting as the sun rises over Samoa, continuing as it makes its way around the earth, and ending some 36 hours later as the sun sets over American Samoa. The service we shall be participating in will have been translated into over 60 languages and 1000 dialects and will be celebrated in 170 countries and islands. Here, in the British Isles, some 6000 services will be taking place. Our local service will take place on:- Friday 2 nd March at 9.45am in St Michael & All Angels Church, Barton Turf. Everyone - men, women, young people - are welcome. There will be a collection for the work of World Day of Prayer and the many worldwide projects they support, such as ‘Happy Child International’, in Brazil and ‘Toxteth’s Women's Centre UK’. The service will be followed by refreshments and a chance to meet with other Christians in our area. Mothering Sunday – Sunday 11th March St Peter’s Church Neatishead is holding a special informal service for Mothering Sunday at 9.30am. Animals featured in our January meeting. We had a very interesting talk on conservation of wildlife in Africa by Robert Ferguson, who runs the North Walsham based animal conservation charity, Real Africa Trust. Did you know that both white and black rhinoceroses are, in fact, grey, but they have different mouth sizes as the white ‘model’ grazes and the black one nibbles leaves and fruit off trees! He told us about balancing the lives of the local villagers, particularly in parts of East Africa, with the need for the animals to keep moving, and the on-going battle to prevent poachers from killing the animals for their horns or tusks. Belgian malinois are the dogs of choice to track down poachers, particularly at night. Our last animal was the old grey mare, who sadly died after her trip to Widecombe Fair – she, her owner (Tom Pearce) and his mates did a repeat performance of our Old Uncle Tom Cobley sketch to the delight and amusement of our Members. A new year has started and we always welcome new Members, so come along on the third Wednesday of any month to NVH at 2pm to see what we do. Monica Riley, 01692 630336

Ashmanhaugh & Barton Wanderers Cricket Club As we near the start of the 2018 cricket season with lots of work being put in behind the scenes by our loyal volunteers, matches and training sessions are being arranged as well social events and fundraisers, we had an amazing start in February with our ‘Evening with Matthew Fleming’ followed by the ‘Auction of Promises’. The whole event was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all, our very grateful thanks go to Matthew for supporting us and keeping the audience enthralled with tales of his time as captain of Kent and playing in the England ODI side, more recently his role as Chairman of Cricket at the MCC, a Director of the ECB and President of the MCC in 2017. (Not to mention his time as president of our club!). We raised just under £3000 which gives a fantastic start to the season and will help us to improve facilities and equipment especially for our huge band of junior members. Our AGM, held in January, saw a large number of members and supporters meet to discuss the season ahead, a very positive meeting. The AGM also saw Nigel Rudd stepping down after a superb period at the helm and our new chairman Harry Buxton being unanimously voted in. For 2018, similar to previous seasons, there will be senior training on Thursday evenings and juniors on Friday evenings throughout the summer at Barton Turf (start dates tbc). We will also continue with the ECB initiative and highly successful All Stars Cricket for 5-8 year olds. Everyone is welcome, senior and junior, experienced or beginner – just come along and have a go! We are also looking for local support to help at the ground; if you can spare a small amount of time to help this is always very much appreciated, please get in touch. The club is always very appreciative of all the local businesses who offer us their support. Local businesses can reach a large body of new customers through our advertising network and any new supporters would be extremely welcome, please get in touch via the website or social media for more information. Please keep an eye on our social media accounts and the website where up to date information, fixtures and results will be posted or get in touch via www.abwanderers.org.uk/ for any information. Wildlife Notes I am pleased to report that the single Brambling is still visiting my garden feeders and that lesser Redpolls have put in a couple of appearances. Both species have also been seen at the Barton Boardwalk although not in large numbers. One bird that we are used to seeing on the broads during the winter months is the Little Grebe, or Dabchick as they are also known. They are the smallest and most common member of the Grebe family and tend to be seen feeding along the edges of rivers or waterways like the Broads. They are often in pairs although on coastal estuaries they can be seen in larger numbers. Once winter is over they will disperse to their breeding territories, usually on small ponds and quieter waterways where their trilling calls will be heard and the adults develop a burgundy colour to the sides of the neck. They are like round, fluffy brown balls with almost no tail and make a little plop like noise when they suddenly dive down to feed. The old Norfolk name for them is ‘Didapper’ which is thought to be derived from ‘Divedapper’, another old country name. During late January a scarcer relative of the Little Grebe turned up on Barton Broad and was seen intermittently for a fortnight. A Black-Necked Grebe in its grey and white winter plumage graced us with its presence. They are known as a scarce but regular winter visitor to Norfolk although there is a small breeding population in Britain of somewhere between 40 – 80 pairs. They have a distinctive blood red coloured eye and the end of its beak appears slightly upturned. In winter they are quite at home on the sea but appear on inland waterways when conditions are rough. In their breeding plumage they have a golden yellow fan of feathers from behind the eye, which contrasts with their black body colour. The old naturalists called it the ‘Firey Eye’. Birds of Norfolk tells me that the first British record was of one caught alive by a spaniel near Yarmouth in 1817. In March listen out for the distinctive call of the first returning warbler, the Chiffchaff, and look out for the first Sand Martins feeding over the broads, a sign of spring. Lesley Smith News from the White House Stores Spring is just around the corner and with that comes Mothering Sunday (11th March) and Easter. The White House Stores Elves have been busy picking out some lovely treats, gifts and cards for both those occasions, and yes…there IS chocolate! We’ve also been stocking up on new items to ring the changes so if you haven’t been in for a while come and give us a look. We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help run the shop, maybe this is you? There are so many ways you could help and it needn’t be a big commitment. Are you new in the village, just retired, have a little one who has just started school? The shop won’t run without our wonderful volunteers and it helps to spread the load. £10 Notes From 1st March, the paper notes will no longer be accepted in shops, restaurants and other retailers. The new £10 - featuring Jane Austen - is made from polymer, and is the first Bank of England note with a tactile feature to help blind and partially-sighted users. The tactile feature is a series of raised dots in the top left-hand corner of the banknote, developed with the help of the Royal National Institute of the Blind. Anyone left holding the outdated notes after the spending deadline will have to take them to a bank, building society, post office or Bank of England. As you may have noticed, every January the Editor changes. The Deputy Editor becomes the Editor! The Deputy is responsible for putting together the last two pages, Diary Dates and Services for a year (they scour The NIB, receive emails and the vicar sends in the service dates), they then get promoted to Editor for a further year, that is then the end of their term. If you would like to be considered for the post of Deputy then Editor, please get in touch. Most articles arrive these days via email, but hand delivered or posted are welcome, and the Editor is responsible for receiving these and making them ‘fit’ the space available (a lot of cutting and pasting – often with a small amount of editing, spellchecking and general tidying) but we aim to keep the style and words of the contributor as much as possible. Eleven issues of The NIB a year with the December and January being a double issue, and always with the deadline of 14th of the month. Anyone is welcome to submit an article, dates or interesting story, and as long as it is within our criteria, and not offensive, it will be considered to be included (space allowing). We have two lovely Managers who keep us in line. Yvonne is responsible for the advertisements and is also the treasurer: Wendy responsible for distribution of the magazine including over 30 posted all around the country. The NIB can also be viewed on-line through the website ‘achurchnearyou’ adding either Neatishead, Irstead or Barton Turf. The team get together to proof read soon after the deadline, then after the corrections, it is emailed to the wonderful Roger at Century Printing in Stalham – he is so patient and helpful - over the years he has sorted many problems and is always guiding the new editor. And lastly, and very importantly, Anne Connell and Doreen Neave do a sterling job distributing over 500 copies around the three villages to a great band of willing deliverers who, no matter what the weather, make sure each house receives a copy of the latest edition by the first of the month. A HUGE thank you to each and every one of you.
