We will open at the new space for regular distri- bution on Tuesday June 3rd, continuing the same pantry hours of Tuesdays and ursdays from 10am-12pm. e rst oor of the new pantry will operate on the supermarket-style choice model, with families able to shop by family size of 1-6. Clients will select food according to their family’s needs and preferences. All current pantry clients will need to re-register, providing proof of family size. New clients will be able to shop for family size of one on the initial visit if they do not bring proof of family size with them. Aer that they must prove family size. And we’re going green! No more plastic bags– all clients will need to bring their own bags. e new pantry will provide a beautiful new space and will oer much more fresh produce, some of it grown in NEBHDCo’s own gardens! New reach-in refrigeration units will provide more dairy products, frozen poultry and meats. A range of cooking classes and nutrition demon- strations will provide information about eating for health, and samples prepared from food available in the pantry. A new food garden behind the pantry has been built and planted with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, basil, collards and more! e sec- ond oor will also have a benets center to provide expanded benets referral ser- vices. A Message from the CEO

152 Tompkins Avenue Garden Earlier this year we hired a team of paid youth interns to build this garden from the ground up and grow food to be distrib-uted at our nearby Golden Harvest Food Pantry. They’re also learning about our urban environment as well as valuable job-skills. We are honored to be working with Crystal, Da’Equan, Simone, Warren, and Yasmine. They are a hardworking, fun, and brilliant team of young people. Would you like to grow your own food? Join us! We have spots for community members to grow with us!

We’ll have music, seed starting workshops, games and prizes, cooking demonstrations, and food!

The event is FREE. All are welcome to bring a dish to share.

Food Empower-ment Education and Sustainability Team (FEEST)On April 25th, we held our first FEEST din-ner. FEEST is our youth-led improvisational cooking program that invites youth to build community and engage in issues of food and social justice. As we each went around and named one ingredient per dish, we came up with wild ideas and somehow made a delicious menu that included roasted purple (purple?! Yes, purple!) sweet potatoes with rosemary, kale salad, cornmeal crusted pep-pers, and more! We shared stories, listened to music and danced a little too. Are you a young person from age 14-17? Please join us for the next FEEST!

Soul Food Junkies Film Screening and Cooking EventBaffled by his dad’s unwillingness to change his soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, filmmaker Byron Hurt learns-more about this rich culinary tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity.

6:30pm – Cook with Chef Jin! Together, we’ll prepare a nutritious soul food dish and take home the recipe to make it again! Arrive early – space is limited.

7pm SHARP - Soul Food Junkies Film Screening with nutritious soul food plates prepared by Chef Jin of Jinsjourney.com.

8pm – 8:30pm – Discussion of the movie and hopes for better food in here in Bed-Stuy.

Here’s what’s happening this Spring and Summer…

Harvest Home Farmers’ Market We’re partnering with Harvest Home, an organization dedicated to increasing access to local, farm-fresh produce, educating the public about health and nutrition, support-ing regional agriculture and providing job opportunities during the market season. The “Marcy Park” market will operate from July – November on the corner of Myrtle and Marcy Aves.

Central Brooklyn Food Co-opNEBHDCo has joined forces with the Brooklyn Movement Center (BMC) and community members from Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy to organize and build a food cooperative that is “for us, by us”. With a racial and economic justice driven mis-sion, the co-op will not only offer healthy and affordable foods but will serve as an open community space. Before this co-op can become an up and running entity, it needs many people involved in the process. So, please join the effort now!

Community Chef TrainingWe couldn’t be more excited to work with Just Food to bring their Community Chef training to Bed-Stuy. 20 community mem-bers will learn how to facilitate workshops about local, seasonal eating and cooking; basic nutrition; fruit and vegetable iden-tification; recipe selection and creation; knife skills; and food storage and prepa-ration. Community Chefs inspire and empower New Yorkers to create delicious and healthy meals for themselves and their families. After completing the four-day training, Community Chefs are paid to conduct cooking demonstration at farm-ers’ markets, health fairs, schools, bodegas, and community events.

When: Saturdays July 12th, 19th, 26th and August 2nd 10am – 5pm, All sessions are mandatory for the full day.

Brooklyn Chef BattleNEBHDCo is excited to partner with Jin’s Journey, Inc. who on Saturday, June 28, 2014, will present the Brooklyn Chef Battle. This community event is an Iron Chef-style battle where three chef teams will have the chance to show off their talents in the kitchen. The Brooklyn Chef Battle event kicks off at 12p with vendors, activities and fun for the entire family. The vendor marketplace will feature a Family Center with games, an arts table, face paint-ing and more!

Ms. Shafon Longshore of Bedford Stuyvesant is the latest winner of a $500 award from the Finding Your Future Scholarship Fund, spon-sored by Michael SK McKinney. Ms. Longshore chose to take advantage of a great opportunity for youth between 13 – 18 who live in NEBHDCo buildings, are doing well in school and plan to attend college. We are grateful to Mr. McKinney for his generosity in providing funding for this program over the last two and half years, award-ing scholarships to seven outstanding youth. In October 2013 NEBHDCo’s new Opportunity Resource Center opened at Throop and Lafayette Avenues, to bring employment and educational support resources to Bed-Stuy. The Resource Cen-ter is managed by NEBHDCo staff, with employment support resources provided through partnerships with well-estab-lished local education, job readiness, job training and placement support agencies. Participating organizations include St. Nick’s Alliance, The HOPE Program,

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow, Henkels & McCoy, NYC District 79 Alternative Education and Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation. The primary service currently provided is linkages to our local partner agencies, with some classes provided directly at the Center. We have hosted employment and education fairs, information and enroll-ment events, and on-site testing for High School Equivalency (HSE) and Adult Basic Education (ABE).
