Letter from NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA I can’t believe it is July already! It feels like we just got started with the tour and now there is only a month of tourna-ments left. But now looking back we saw some pretty cool things this June.
A couple major highlights are the holes-in-one we had this month. The first was Ashley Willms of Omaha scoring an ace on the par-4 6th hole at Eagle Run Golf Club. The next came from Chris Rasmussen of Elkhorn acing the par-3 11th hole at Westwood Heights Golf Course. Probably the best thing that I take from June is the sportsmanship I have experienced at each event. Golf Professionals, Golf Club Members and Facility Operators have been calling me after each event going on about how polite you are, how much fun it is to have you around the course and that they hope to have you out to play again soon. I am also seeing it first hand in the way you handle tough situations, honesty at the scoring table and words of encourage-
ment given to fellow competitors. This type of behavior on the golf course impresses me more than any score. I am proud of you all and keep up the great work. See you at a NJGT event soon! Joe Canny, PGA
Junior Golf Director – NJGT [email protected] (402) 730-8364 @theNJGT

Greetings everyone from Wayne, America. My name is Kevin Peterson and I am the president and publisher of Northeast Nebraska Media, Inc. a/k/a the Wayne Herald & Morning Shopper. My only hobby outside of the office is golf and this summer I am honored to be the site direc-tor for the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour in Northeast Nebraska. I will be overseeing events in Columbus, Wayne, Norfolk and North Bend as well as volunteering for other events such as state stroke play, among others.
I became involved working with NJGT through Gary Austin a few years ago and I truly enjoy it. Getting to meet junior golfers and their followers is rewarding, especially when you see them at multiple events. I look forward to getting more involved each year and my goal is to even-tually go through all the rules training classes to help run tournaments well into the future.
I have a wife, Shannon and two children, Brittney and Jared.
‘s Tour Tips
Ryan Norman, PGA Teaching Professional/Certified Coach GolfTEC Omaha
Ryan is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, 2005. Turned profes-sional in 2006 and gained PGA Member-
ship in October 2010. Ryan is in his 3rd year as Teach-ing Professional/Certified Coach at GolfTEC-Omaha. In 3 years he has taught a total of 3,813 lessons.
In all my lessons the #1 problem I see with amateur players is that their weight is too much on their right foot (for right-handed players) and left foot (for left-handed players) at impact with their iron shots. This leads to "chunky" ground first contact.
My tour tip: Set up with 55-60% of the weight on the left leg (if right-handed), right leg (if left-handed)… maintain that percentage of weight at the top of your backswing. Moving in to impact the weight should increase from 55-60% on the forward leg, to 90% at impact. The finish position should be 95% on the for-ward leg (left leg if right-handed; right leg if left-handed). By doing this, you'll start hitting the ball first and eliminate "chunky" shots and hitting ground first.
All Nebraska Junior Golf Tour Members receive a 60-Minute Performance Evaluation for $69 and 20% off all lesson plans and programs. Mention you are a NJGT Member when scheduling your first 60-minute evalua-tion. Offer good until August 31, 2013. Just as there is no single cause for slow play, there is no single solution for improving pace of play. Useful advice and information can come from anywhere: fellow players, golf pros, superintendents, engineers. Below is a list provided by the USGA of tips to help you improve your pace of play and cut down on the duration of your rounds.
Start Smart. Confirm your tee time in advance and make it a point to arrive at the tee early with your golf equipment in order, ready to play.
“Tee It Forward” unless you are consistently able to reach greens in regulation from the back tees. In other words, play from a set of tees that is comfortable for you – one where you are more likely to hit lofted irons into greens instead of hybrids or fairway woods. It is acceptable for players in the same group to play from different tees. (The USGA Handicap System provides a formula for adjusting handicaps from different tees.)
Try alternate forms of play to speed up your round. Match play, Stableford, best-ball and other formats are easy and fun alternatives to individual stroke play because not every player has to hole out on every hole.
Minimize your time on the tee. On the tee it is usually acceptable for players to “hit when ready.” You can also save time by playing a provisional ball (Rule 27-2) if you think your original ball might be lost or out of bounds.
Plan your shot before you get to your ball. Once you are off the tee, think ahead. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. If you take your glove off between shots, have it back on be-fore it is your turn to play. Even a small step like this saves time.
Keep your pre-shot routine short. Pick your line of play once and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one practice swing, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn.
Aim to play in 20 seconds. From club selection to pre-shot routine to execution, try to hit your shot in 20 seconds.
Develop an eye for distance. You don’t have to step off yardage for every shot. To determine precise distance, find a yardage marker before reaching your ball, then step off the yardage on the way to your ball Or, consider buying an electronic range-finder or global positioning system for golf and use when permitted by Local Rule. If others you are playing with are not familiar with the course, the Rules permit players to exchange yardage information without penalty.
When sharing a cart, use a buddy system. Don’t wait in the cart while your cartmate hits and then drive to your ball. Get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your cartmate pick you up. Or, drive to your ball after you drop your cartmate off and then pick him or her up after you hit.
Be helpful to others in your group. Follow the flight of all tee shots, not just your own. Help others look for their ball if you already know the location of yours, volunteer to fill in a divot, rake a bunker or raise a flagstick.
Keep up with the group in front of you. Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently not able to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, invite the group behind you to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group.
Be efficient on the putting green. Mark your ball and lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. Wait until the next tee to record your score.
Remember that picking up your ball is permitted by the USGA Handicap System. If not in an in-dividual stroke play competition, it is generally OK to pick up your ball and move on to the next hole if you are “out” of a hole and want to maintain pace of play. This applies in match play and many forms of stroke play.
Don’t Have Time? Play Nine! You won’t always have time in your schedule for an 18-hole round of golf. But you can still enjoy the game by playing nine. It’s fully compatible with both the Rules of Golf and the USGA Handicap Sys-tem. And when it comes to golf, nine is better than none.
And make sure to sign the Pace of Play Pledge!

The Nebraska Golf Association created the FORE! Program last summer as a way for junior golfers to play more frequently. This year we have continued the program and expanded to Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln and Norfolk. Golfers ages 7-17 are welcome to join and will be classified as either “Full Access” or “Supervised Access” members based on age and/or playing ability. The member-ship cost is $10 for the months of June, July and August. Members will receive a FORE! card in the mail, which they will use every time they play at one of the select-ed courses. Each time they play, the member will have to notify the golf course that they are a FORE! member and they can play for $4. In order to become a member, an applicant must be a member of one of the following: First Tee Programs, Great Golf Expectations Program, PGA of America Boys & Girls Clubs of America Golf Program, NGF's Youth on Course, Junior Golf Programs at NGA Member Clubs or Host Facilities, LPGA/USGA Girls Golf Programs, Nebraska Junior Golf Tour, Panhan-dle Junior Golf Tour or High School Golf Teams. As someone who is involved in one of these programs, we are asking for your help in increasing awareness about the program. Please mention this information to any juniors golfers who you think might be interested in joining the FORE! program. If you have any questions you can visit http://www.nebgolf.org/juniorgolf_fore.html or call Connor of the NGA at 402-505-4653 ext. 105.
