The No. 8 Nebraska rifle team begins postseason action on Saturday as it travels to Murray, Ky., for the NCAA Qualifiers at 9 a.m. The Huskers will be joined at their site by Murray State, UT Martin and Memphis. NU is shooting for its fifth consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, which would tie the program record. Huskers Ranked No. 8The Huskers remain eighth in this week’s CRCA Top 20 Poll. The top spot still belongs to TCU, while West Virginia holds the second spot. Murray State is in third, followed by Air Force and Alaska-Fairbanks to round out the top five. The final rankings will be released next week and Nebraska will need to remain in the top eight to qualify for the 2017 Championships. The Huskers have not ranked lower than eighth the entire season. Scouting MemphisNo. 11 Memphis ended the regular season with a 4640-4615 loss to Ole Miss on Feb. 11. Shooters to watch include All-American Amy Fisher, Levi Clark and Amberlie Ezell. Nebraska faced Memphis on Jan. 28 and the Huskers topped the Tigers 4,656-4,650. Nebraska is 26-5 overall against Memphis, dating back to 1999. Scouting Murray StateThird-ranked Murray State recently lost to West Virginia on Feb. 12, by 13 points. Despite the loss, junior Ivan Roe broke the school’s individual air rifle record after firing a near-perfect score of 598. The Racers took first in both air rifle and smallbore at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in early February. Sophomore MacKenzie Martin and junior Ben Estes have had successful seasons for the Racers and will play important roles in Murray State’s postseason efforts.Scouting UT MartinUT Martin finished fourth at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships Feb. 3-4. Kaitlin Korinek, Joe Martin and Jennifer Plocinik were recently awarded conference honors for their efforts this season. Korinek was named OVC Co-Freshman of the Year, Air Rifle First-Team All-Newcomer, Air Rifle Second-Team All-OVC and Smallbore All-Newcomer. Martin earned Smallbore All-OVC First-Team honors, while Plocinik earned Smallbore All-Newcomer. The trio will lead the Skyhawks in pursuit of a NCAA Championship appearance in 2017. The first part is half of the qualifying match score. The second part is the average of the top three regular-season scores at different locations divided by two. The two parts are added together to get the final qualifying score. The top eight teams based on this system will qualify for the 2017 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on March 10 -11. Qualifying teams will be announced on the NCAA Rifle Selection Show at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Last Time - Nebraska Notches School Records on Senior Day

Lincoln, Neb. --- In the final home match of their Husker careers, seniors and All-Americans Jaycee Carter and Rachel Martin led the Nebraska rifle team in a record-breaking performance against the University of Alaska-Fairbanks on Thursday. Martin led the team in smallbore with 582. Carter scored the second-highest score in air rifle (593), helping the Huskers to the second-highest air rifle score in school history (2,367). Additionally, the air rifle score broke the NU Rifle Range record by three points.

In smallbore, Samantha Peterson joined Martin as the team leader with 582. Dacotah Faught followed closely behind with 578, while Nina Radulovic and Carter earned 574 and 564, respectively. As a team, the Huskers finished with a team score of 2,316.

Trailing by 10 points heading into air rifle, Nebraska needed to make up some ground to claim the victory over Alaska-Fairbanks. Faught and Carter led the comeback effort with 594 and 593, respectively. Peterson added support with a score of 592. Radulovic notched 588, while Martin earned 584 en route to a record-breaking performance for the Huskers. Maddie Korthas, competing unattached, scored a career-high score of 583 as well.

Despite the incredible performance by the team, NU was not able to get the victory over Alaska-Fairbanks. The Huskers fell to the Nanooks 4,691-4,683, but the team’s final score of 4,683 is the fourth-highest score ever recorded at the NU Rifle Range.

Sagen Maddalena led UAF in both disciplines, firing 591 in smallbore and 596 in air rifle. The Nanooks finished with a team smallbore score of 2,326 and a total air rifle score of 2,365.

Ashley MacAllister was named the fifth rifle coach in the history of the Nebraska rifle program in July 2014. She be-gins her third season in 2016-17 after taking the Huskers to the NCAA Championships each of her first two seasons at Nebraska.

MacAllister came to Nebraska after spending the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach at Kentucky. She inherited a Nebraska program that finished fifth at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

In her first season (2014-15) at Nebraska, MacAllister led the Huskers to their third consecutive NCAA Champi-onship appearance, where the team finished fourth overall. MacAllister also coached Rachel Martin to an individual smallbore championship. Martin captured the title and became only the third Husker to win an individual champion-ship. Under MacAllister, the team finished third in the conference and 7-5 during the regular season.

In 2015-16, MacAllister added assistant coach Rick Johnson to her staff. The pair led the Huskers to a 8-6 regu-lar-season record, along with a sixth-place finish at the GARC Championships. Additionally, the pair took NU to its fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, where the team finished eighth in her second season at Nebraska. MacAllister also produced two All-Americans in Rachel and Denise Martin. MacAllister also led the the Puerto Rico National Team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as its head coach.

Before coming to Nebraska, MacAllister assisted in the day-to-day management of the Kentucky rifle program under Coach Harry Mullins. MacAllister coordinated practice plans, matches, team travel, equipment and facility management at Kentucky. She also assisted in recruiting. MacAllister helped the Wildcats to a third-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

MacAllister was a four-year letterwinner and a team captain at Murray State. Her career for the Racers included a third-place overall team finish in air rifle at the 2010 NCAA Championships. She was a member of the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team in air rifle in 2009. She was a two-time second-team All-OVC selection in air rifle. MacAllister was also a leader on Ohio Valley Conference championship teams in 2010 and 2011. She helped Murray State to a fifth-place team finish as a junior at the 2011 NCAA Championships and a seventh-place team finish in 2010.

MacAllister earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Murray State in May of 2012, before spending the 2012-13 season as a graduate assistant for the Racers rifle team. She assisted in the daily operations of the program, including the coordination of team travel and operation of the target system during team matches. She earned her master’s degree in human development and leadership from Murray State in May of 2013. MacAllister also spent a year as an intern within the Murray State athletic department, gaining a working knowledge of each area in the department.

In addition to her experience at Murray State and Kentucky, MacAllister spent five years assisting with the Civilian Marksmanship Program. In the summers of 2012, 2013 and 2014, she served as assistant director, preparing for summer camps by hiring and training camp counselors, coordinat-ing travel and managing the daily operations of the summer camps. She began her association with the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 2009 and 2010, serving as a camp counselor and teaching shooting skills to junior high and high school students.

A native of Eubank, Ky., MacAllister was heavily involved in campus and community activities at Murray State. She served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s executive committee and represented Murray State at annual Ohio Valley Conference meetings. She was also the vice-chair-man of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans and the Murray State College Republicans. She also spent two months in the summer of 2011 working in the office of Kentucky Congressman Hal Rogers at the U.S. House of Representatives.

Her husband Tim is the video coordinator for Creighton University’s basketball program. The couple lives in Ashland.

Rick Johnson was named the assistant rifle coach at Nebraska on Aug. 20, 2015. He begins his second season with the Huskers in 2016-17.

In his first season at Nebraska, Johnson helped lead NU to its fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, where the team finished eighth. Johnson produced two All-Americans in Denise and Rachel Martin in 2015-16. Additionally, he helped the Huskers to a 8-6 regular-season record, along with a sixth-place finish at the GARC Championships in his debut season with Nebraksa.

Prior to coming to Nebraska, Johnson served as the assistant coach at Army West Point for three seasons under head coach Ron Wigger from 2011 to 2014. During the 2014-15 season, Johnson was the acting head coach at Army West Point and helped mentor the team to a 7-6 record and a seventh-place finish at the GARC Championships.

During his first year at Army West Point, Johnson played an instrumental part in the team’s fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In the four years Johnson served as coach, the Black Knights finished 30-17 and made three NCAA appearances (2012-13-14). His peers rewarded his efforts by voting him the GARC Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. He was the CRCA Coach of the Year in 2014-15.

Prior to working at Army West Point, Johnson founded a junior marksmanship program at Harvard in 2005. The program is meant for individuals 10-20 years old who are interested in competitive shooting. The program teaches firearm safety, along with marksmanship skills. He served as the director for the program until 2011. From 2006 to 2011, Johnson coached the Massachusetts Junior Rifle Team, comprised of the top shooters within the state.

Johnson graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell with a degree in meteorology in 1999. Following graduation, he served as an assistant staff meteorologist at MIT for eight years.

Johnson has been a competitive smallbore shooter for over 25 years. He is a three-time Massachusetts state champion, claiming the 3-position Junior State Titles in 1985 and 1986, and also capturing the 1986 Prone Junior State Championship.

Johnson is a licensed USA shooting level one rifle official and advanced rifle coach. He and his wife Ann have one son, Erik.
