I t’s that time again – the third annual Green Expo!! We have been working for months to give you another great opportunity to “Greet and Meet” your fel- low industry professionals, see the latest in equipment, learn new methods of pro- duction, educate yourself on the newest trends in the industry, visit with your sup- pliers, lend your voice and experience to the newest among us and of course, have a great time, all under one roof. The Trade Show will be open from 3:00-6:00 on Monday, January 11, and from 8:00-7:00 on Tuesday, January 12, so there is plenty of time to get around to all the vendors and do some window shopping or even some serious shop- ping. I am sure they will be happy to accommodate everyone. We again have a nice mix of speakers from motivation and teamwork, to per- meable pavers and green roofs, to work- ing smarter, to historic plants, to winter conifers, to propagation techniques, to quick and dirty design, to buying or sell- ing a business, to GreatPlants ® , to… WOW…it’s time to rest!!! And while we are resting, let’s wander the tables of silent auction items. The silent auction starts at 1:30 this year which gives us all a lot more time to look over the merchandise and maybe bring a pair of hedge clippers home to the wife…OOPs! You aren’t really going to do that, are you? There is an auction dona- tion form in this newsletter, please take a minute and donate something to the auction. The funds earned at the auction go to student scholarships and educa- tion, both help serve the industry, so donate anything from a pocket knife, to a stepping stone, to a book, to a wheelbar- row, to a “hedge clipper,” to gift certifi- cates for lunch or dinner, to baked goods, to plants, to seed packets, to a trip to the Bahamas for the Executive Director. Oh, did I say that? The Tuesday Night LIVE Auction begins at 6:00pm and goes until we run out of auction items. Don’t hesitate to donate an item for the live auction, there are always lots of laughs and lots of bid- ding, so get in the action and practice raising that hand. Our friend and perma- nent auctioneer, Martin Kluethe, will be back to talk you out of your money. Something NEW this year, “Greet and Meet your Board Members” between 4:00 and 5:00 on Monday in the Mid- America lobby. What a perfect time to discuss the industry, the NNLA, ques- tions you have or just stop by to intro- duce yourself and say hi. Grab a drink and let’s visit! We sincerely hope you will consider attending the Green Expo and sending your staff for the education and network- ing benefits. The NNLA is always here to serve the industry and its members. Here wea r e ,count-

ing down to theend of an unusu-al year—record-breaking, in fact.Cold, heat,drought, rain,storms, politics,economics—you

name it, a record of some sort fell orwas at least threatened. Most of thishappened in spite of our best or worstefforts; some of it, because of what wedid do or intend to do. Our individualefforts toward a cleaner, greener, brighter future are making a differencein energy consumption and conserva-tion, in development of economical andecological (hence the catch-phrase‘eco’…) products and methods. Peopleare rediscovering what those of us inthe Green Industry have not only knownbut attempted to practice for all our pri-

vate and professional lives: the health ofthe planet relies on the health of theplants, and we have a significant role toplay in the sustainability of this system.

The Nebraska Green Expo bringstogether people with diverse opinionsand different approaches to planning, planting, and managing the landscape, however and wherever it is found. Andit’s really only through understandingand discussing differences that we cancollectively figure out what works andwhat doesn’t and continue to promotethe best practices for all of us. So let’smake this a record year for the GreenExpo as well. Very few conferences andtrade shows offer so much for so little, between workshops and breakout ses-sions and vendors and opportunities forcamaraderie. The first two years werewithout a doubt successful. Evaluationswere positive, suggestions were madefor improvements, and the financial bot-tom line was black. If we apply the well-used phrase ‘third time’s the charm’ to

this third Green Expo, 2010 will be theyear to break the records for atten-dance and enthusiasm. The lineupincludes motivational speakers andspeakers who will challenge us and per-suade us. Workshops will cover designand diagnostics. If you twitter or tweat,or think you should, there are sessionsto help you sing a stronger song. If youare technologically challenged, we’veprovided a spot for you to learn to incor-porate intstruments into your business-es. And of course, we’ll talk plants—greatones and winter ones, from trees to turf. There is a strong focus on low impactand greener practices, and alternativesto production that might alter your ownbottom line. Time on the trade showfloor is supplemented by ‘meet andgreet’ sessions and of course, the auc-tion.

Let’s make the Green Expo a priorityon the 2010 to do list, and I’ll see you atthe show.
