This workshop is designed for anyone 18 years of age or older to learn the outdoor skills usually associated with hunting and fishing, but useful in a variety of outdoor pursuits. This workshop is for you if: • you have never tried these activities but have hoped for an opportunity to learn. • you are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills. • you would like to try your hand at some new activities. • you are looking for the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

Session Fitness Levels:

BASIC ARCHERY - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowThis beginner class will teach participants proper equipment selection, correct shooting techniques and form, nocking an arrow, targeting, release techniques, terminology and safety. This is a fun, hands-on experience that promotes archery as a healthy lifetime activity. Participants will be doing live shooting. Equipment will be provided. Participants may bring their own equipment.

BASIC FISHING SKILLS - Indoor class. LowThis intense class will offer hands-on instruction in choosing equipment selection, places to go, and landing the fish. Learn about equipment, knot tying, choosing bait, loading a reel and casting and fishing terminology in this logical and simple approach to fishing. No live fishing will be done in this informational class.

BASIC SHOTGUN SHOOTING - Outdoor class. LowLearn proper techniques in gun handling, safety and get tips on how to shoot shotguns. Participants will shoot clay rocks. Firearms and safety items will be provided. Introduction to Firearms, Hunter Education or significant firearm experience is required. Participants must use firearms provided.

BOWFISHING - Outdoor class. Low/ModerateIf you have often thought of archery but really enjoy fishing, this might be next step for you. You will grab a bow and arrows and head to the water as you learn all about the sport of bowfishing in a simulated shooting situation. Participants may bring their own equipment.

BOWHUNTING BASICS AND EQUIPMENT - Outdoor class. Low/Moderate This class will cover the basics of bowhunting and equipment. You will shoot at various 3-D animal targets from the ground and an elevated stand; learn tree stand selection, safety, preparation for hunting, tracking and preparation and care of game. Participants may bring their own equipment.

INTRO TO KAYAKING AND CANOEING - Outdoor class. Moderate/HighLearn about different types of kayaks and canoes, the parts of each vessel, differences in paddles, strokes to use, techniques, and other equipment and safety. Depending on weather conditions, participants will test newly learned skills in a nearby pond. We suggest bringing half gloves to prevent blisters and wear proper clothing (see “What to Bring” list).

TREE ID AND ME - Indoor/Outdoor class. Low/Moderate Learn how to identify trees, how to properly care for your trees (including pruning and planting), and how to be an effective caretaker. Learn the benefits of trees and how trees affect ecology, wildlife, habitat and you.

BASIC DEER HUNTING - Indoor/Outdoor class. Low/Moderate This class will cover the biology and habits of deer. Learn the essentials of hunting deer from gear, firearms, safety and hunting strategies through hands-on field experience and simulated hunting situations. You will scout, track and look at different blinds/stands as we explore the challenge of chasing big game. Be ready for hands-on activity and wear proper shoes/boots for some hiking.

FIREARM CLEANING AND CARE - Indoor class. LowOwning a firearm is a lot of fun but it also means properly caring for and maintaining your gun if you want it to last and shoot properly and safely. Learn shortcuts and tricks that make cleaning a gun simple to learn and remember, and find out what household items along with tools and cleaning products from the gun industry can make the task of cleaning or maintenance much easier.

BASIC TURKEY HUNTING - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowThis class will cover the biology and habits of the wild turkey. Discussion will include hunting strategies, equipment, clothing, camouflage, calling, patterning a shotgun, chokes to use and safety. No actual hunting will be done.

FLY-FISHING – Indoor/Outdoor class. LowClass will cover all aspects of fly-fishing, including casting, equipment, instructions on reading water, insects and their hatches and use of various knots. A 2017 Nebraska fishing permit and Aquatic Stamp is required. Bring sunglasses or other eye protection. Participants may bring their own equipment.

TRAILER BASICS - Outdoor class. Low/Moderate This class will cover how to properly hitch a trailer to a vehicle, safely maneuver and pull a trailer, and back a trailer into a parking spot. Learn safety, right of ways, boating laws and how to use and trailer your boat or personal watercraft. This is a great opportunity to try your hand at trailering a boat or camper, backing and pulling skills.

INTERMEDIATE ARCHERY - Indoor/Outdoor class. Low/Moderate This next step in Archery will teach you to tune your own bow, set nock points, and adjust sights. We will fine tune your form and go over how to extend your shooting distance. This course is for those who already shoot archery but want to hone their skills, or learn to tune their equipment and help you advance your skills beyond the beginning archery phase. Participants should bring their own equipment. Equipment will be available. Basic archery knowledge and skills are beneficial prior to taking this class.

FISH CLEANING AND COOKING – Indoor/Outdoor class. LowThis class will teach you how to choose and sharpen a knife, how to fillet your fish, packaging it, and putting it on the table. Learn the whole process and top it off with how to cook fish and share recipes. From the water to the table this class will be sure to please any angler.

INTERMEDIATE SHOTGUN SHOOTING - Outdoor class. LowThis offers an excellent opportunity to fine-tune your shotgunning skills by getting tips from instructors and shooting clay targets. Beginning Shotgun Shooting or previous shooting experience is required.

INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS - Indoor class. Low Learn basic firearm safety, gun handling, identifying guns and the use of various firearms and types of ammunition. It will help you gain confidence and knowledge about firearms. No live shooting will be done. This course, Hunter Education or significant firearm experience is required for the Basic Shotgun Shooting, Rifle Marksmanship/Muzzleloading, and Handgun classes.

FINDING YOUR WAY WITH A COMPASS - Indoor/Outdoor class. Low/Moderate Learn how to navigate with the use of a compass and feel comfortable enough in the woods to venture off the trails to experience some wild places. Learn the features of a compass, basic navigation, some tricks for the trail, which compass to have in your pack and how to safely find you way without modern technology. Wearing comfortable hiking shoes as you will go on a short hike.

RIVER KAYAKING - Outdoor class. HighPaddle the beautiful Loup River and experience river kayaking at its best while enjoying the fall colors and scenery. Participants must have ample experience in paddling. River kayaking experience or beginning kayaking is required. We suggest bringing half gloves to prevent blisters and wear proper clothing (see “What to Bring” list). This class requires people to be able to get in and out of a kayak on river sandbars and be able to drag a kayak in a river situation.

READING THE WOODS - Indoor/Outdoor class. ModerateLearn to observe and identify flora and fauna while hiking along the trails of the National Forest. Discuss plant and animal interrelationships and how to read animal sign. Participants will hike the majority of class. Wear appropriate clothing, hiking boots. Bring binoculars if you have them.

ON POND FISHING - Outdoor class. LowTake a trip to the catch-and-release pond with your fishing instructors. You can try fishing with a variety of fishing equipment: rods, reels, fly-fishing, float-tube fishing and fishing from a kayak. A 2017 Nebraska fishing permit and Aquatic Habitat Stamp is required. Participation in Basic Fishing Skills, Beginning Fly-Fishing or good knowledge of casting and knot-tying is required. Participants may bring their own equipment.

WILDERNESS FIRST AID - Indoor class. ModerateLearn what to do when an accident happens outdoors. This class will cover basic first aid for minor injuries, techniques for serious injuries and lifesaving tips, how to handle injuries from extreme heat or cold, cuts, broken bones, ways to manage bites and stings and what you should have in your wilderness first aid kit.

PRIMITIVE SKILLS - Outdoor class. LowGo back in time and learn the ways of the past. Try your hand at atlatl spear throwing, tomahawk throwing and sling shots. Learn about basic shelter making, cordage, knot tying, nature awareness and different tools used in primitive survival. Discover nature by becoming part of nature using primitive skills and tools.

PHOTOGRAPHY - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowLearn outdoor photography from our award winning NEBRASKAland Magazine staff. Using point-and-shoot and digital cameras, this class will concentrate on field photography. It will cover basic camera operation, settings, subjects, lighting, composition, and practical field photography. Students may bring their own camera and equipment.

GAME CALLS – MAKE AND TAKE - Indoor class. LowMake some noise as you build your own game calls. Whether your interest is for hunting, photography or just critter observation, learn effective vocalization methods of getting them close. You will make and learn how to use two-different types of game calls and be able to take them home with you. This is a hands-on session with manual & power tool work involved.

RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP AND MUZZLELOADING - Outdoor class. LowGet lots of coaching on how to safely handle, load and shoot rifles and muzzleloaders (provided, please do not bring your own firearm). Learn marksmanship and shooting techniques. Learn how to clean and care for muzzleloaders and rifles. Introduction to Firearms, Hunter Education or significant firearm experience is required.

HANDGUN BASICS - Outdoor class. LowThis course will cover the basics of hand gun shooting. Safety, handling and shooting techniques will be covered as well as how and what to hunt with handguns. Participants will shoot .22 handguns at strategically placed targets. INTRODUCTION TO FIREARMS, Hunter Education, or significant firearm experience is required as a prerequisite. Some inside training before heading outside to shoot.

DUTCH OVEN COOKING - Outdoor class. LowLearn how to cook in a Dutch oven on coals, a campfire and on a camp stove. Receive instruction on the basic requirements for storage, preparation and cooking in the outdoors. There are several opportunities to practice your newly-developed skill and you’ll love eating what you make in this class.

GAME BIRD CLEANING AND COOKING - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowNow that you have your game birds learn how to properly clean and care for them from field to table. Share recipes for putting a savory meal on the table and taste samples. This course takes you from the hunt to the table.

T.R.U.S.T. COURSE – CLIMBING, REPELLING AND ZIP LINE - Outdoor class. High Teams Reaching Understanding and Success Together sums up this session. Build trust in others and yourself through team work while building your confidence. Challenge yourself by climbing a 30-foot wall and repelling down using safety and climbing skills. Then be ready for an exciting line ride over 200 feet of valley while safely harnessed to the cable.

WILD EDIBLES - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowLearn the basics of identifying native wildflowers, grasses and other plants of Nebraska. Medicinal values will be covered as well as those that are edible, plants to stay away from and conservation aspects of collecting wild plants. Recipes, times of the year for harvesting plants and preparing plant to eat will be covered. Wear appropriate clothing, and hiking boots for a short hike.

BACKYARD WILDLIFE - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowLearn about different varieties of plants that attract different species of birds, butterflies and pollinators, and other wildlife. Find out which wildlife plants really work. Learn about planting for wildlife habitat, feeding, watering and identifying wildlife in your backyard.

CAMPING BASICS - Outdoor class. LowLearn how to pack and prepare for a camping trip, starting with hands-on demonstrations using various types of equipment, how-to tips, where to go, and fun things to do while camping. Fire building and cooking over a fire will be covered in this well-rounded class. Participants will learn how to make camping a positive and enjoyable experience by utilizing new-found skills.

BIRD ID - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowIncrease your enjoyment of bird watching and learn different types of bird habitat, as well as seasonal and daily cycles necessary for watchingbirds. Learn how to identify birds by habitat, sound, color and field markings. Bring your own binoculars and bird guide if you have them. Class starts indoors before going outdoors on a short hike.

DOG SELECTION AND TRAINING - Indoor/Outdoor class. LowThis class will cover how to select and train a puppy for home and field. Topics include basic obedience, nutrition, housing, preventative health care and retriever training. There will be demonstrations and hands-on experience with the instructors’ dogs.

BOW ScholarshipLimited funds are available for partial scholarship(s) valued at $125. Preference will be given to first-time participants who are single parents, students or members of fixed/low income households. These are partial scholarships only; the remainder of the registration fee and additional Thursday night lodging (optional) is the responsibility of the participant. In the event you are not selected for a scholarship, you will have the option to pay the remaining balance of the full registration fee ($250) or you may request a refund of your $125 deposit and not attend the weekend. Balance of $125 will be due by May 10. If you decide not to attend for any reason, please notify us, so we may have the option of offering this opportunity to another applicant.

CANCELLATION DEADLINE — Refunds will be provided if cancellations are done before July 31. After that date, a $50 processing fee will be deducted from your refund. There are no refunds for registrants who do not cancel by Sept. 1, 2017; however, you may send a substitute.

LODGING – Lodging at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp is dormitory style and may include bunk beds. Sleeping rooms accommodate up to 20 people, and most have adjoining baths. Bring your own bedding and towels. If you do not want to stay at the camp, note that on your registration form. Camping is available adjacent to the 4-H camp at the Nebraska National Forest.

Please bring personal items that you need, any medications and check the “What to Bring List” available at NebraskaBOW.com; this list will be emailed to registered participants.

Confirmation of registration will be sent electronically. Your class schedule and additional information will be sent in early September, along with a map to the State 4-H Camp and clothing recommendations. Demonstration equipment will be provided. Do not bring your own, unless specified in the session agenda.
