Catalogues Through the Years

The first catalog was published in Venice in 1498, even before the Gregorian Calendar was issued. It was a hand-lettered and hand-bound pamphlet of sorts. The inside included a list of books available for purchase. The pamphlets were created for distribution at the town fair.


Overlapping with EDI and Barcode initiatives Early days, manufacturers supply paper catalogs to buyers 1985 – QRS founded to create the first UPC catalog hosting service. Suppliers publish

product data for retailers to synchronize their systems. 1987 – QRS/Keystone 2004 – QRS sold to Inovis 2010 – Inovis sold to GXS 2014 – GXS sold to OpenText; now known as Active Catalogue

1988 – GEIS/GXS creates UPC Express, renamed Global Product Catalogue (GPC) Late 90’s(?) – R-Net Catalog sold to SPS Commerce; now known as SPS Universal Catalog 1999 – UCCNet is created as a Global Data Synchronization catalog (datapool)

Datapools interconnected and collectively called GDSN 2005 – UCCNet and Transora merge to become 1Sync, UCC renamed GS1 2012 – 1Sync & SA2 WorldSync merge to become 1WorldSync

2000 – WorldWide Retail Exchange (WWRE) datapool created 2000 – GlobalNetXchange (GNX) datapool created

2005 – WWRE & GNX merge to become the datapool Agentrics, now NeoGrid 2002 – GDSN created with Global Standards Management Process for changes 2005 – InterTrade creates ecCatalogue, full synchronization in 2006

2010 – GEIS/GXS Global Product Catalogue (GPC) sold to InterTrade 2013 – Merge complete into new InterTrade ecCatalogue
