NEED TO KNOW

● It’s Easter weekend! The service will be approximately 70-80 minutes long, so each section of the lesson can take a few minutes longer if needed. There’s also an extra activity in small group to help keep kids engaged until pick up.

● We have a few special surprises in store today, so read through each section carefully and be prepared.

GAME TIME | 10 Minutes

● As one large group, play some crazy Easter challenge games!

COOL DOWN | 10 Minutes

● Split into small groups and discuss what it means to turn old things into new creations, then practice motions to go with today’s big idea.

LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes

● Respond to today’s big idea through worship and prayer.● Practice this month’s memory verse: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Anyone who belongs to Christ has

become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

SMALL GROUP | 15+ Minutes

● Personally connect with kids and apply the story to their lives by creating a fun garden artwork!

LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes

● Introduce today’s big idea, Jesus Makes Us New through the story of Easter.● Scripture: Mark 14-16

Page 2: NEED TO KNOW · NEED TO KNOW It’s Easter weekend! The service will be approximately 70-80 minutes long, so each section of the lesson can take a few minutes longer if needed. There’s

● Video: 10-Second Countdown Timer ● Say: It’s Easter weekend, and that means it’s time to celebrate Jesus! And

today we’re going to see how Jesus loved us so much, that he gave his life for us. He did that so that we could get rid of our old life, and start a new life following him! So here’s our big idea for Easter.

● Slide: Jesus makes us new.● Ask: Do you guys like NEW things? (Let kids respond.) Sure, we all love new

things! Would you prefer an old video game, or a new video game? A broken bike, or a new, really fast bike? How about a month-old cake for your birthday, or a brand new delicious cake? (Let kids respond to each prompt.)

● Say: New things are great, but you know what’s even better? Turning into something, or someone, new! Let’s check out this incredible video to see how a certain slow, hungry creature turns into something incredibly beautiful.

● Video: How a Caterpillar Becomes a Butterfly ● Say: Isn’t it incredible how something like a caterpillar can transform itself like

that? God’s creation is pretty amazing. But that’s nothing compared to how Jesus makes US new!

● Say: You see, we’re broken too. As humans, we’re all imperfect. We sin, and make wrong choices, and that separates us from God. But God loves us SO much, that he sent Jesus to come rescue us, and turn our old life into a brand new one!

● Say: Let’s watch a video to see exactly what this means, and why it’s such amazing, GOOD news that Jesus came to rescue us.

● Video: God’s Story / The Good News● Say: So why did Jesus rescue us, and offer us this brand new life? (Let kids

respond.) Yep: Jesus did it because he loves you with the most incredible love ever. It doesn’t matter what we’ve done wrong in the past. By coming back to life, Jesus showed he can make ANYTHING new.

● Say: Easter is all about celebrating what Jesus did for us, so let’s kick off this party with singing and dancing!

● Music Video: Be Strong● Say: Great job everyone, next up is game time, so let’s get ready to have

some more Easter fun!

1. Tissue box shake! a. Pick two volunteers, and give them each a tissue box attached to a string. b. Fill each tissue box with 8 eggs, then help kids tie it around their waist, so the box is

behind them. c. When you say “Go!”, both kids should start shaking to try and get all the eggs out of their

box! The first one to empty their box wins.d. Go to this link to see a short video demonstration of how it works: Tissue Box Shake

2. Give each kid a plastic egg and see who can balance it on their head the longest.3. Break kids into small groups and have them line up. Set up a chair several feet opposite

from each group. Give each kid a plastic spoon, and give a plastic egg to the first kid in line. Each kid has to carry the egg on their spoon while walking to chair, around it, then back to their team. Repeat for each kid and see which team finishes finishes first!

4. Let kids roll a plastic egg across the floor using only the plastic spoon (no hands!)

Let’s play some fun Easter games and challenges! Choose games from the following list that will best suit the size and dynamic of your group. You can do all of them, or just a few!

● Show kids four “old/new” images of old, broken or ruined things. ○ Then help them imagine how each thing could be turned into something new (they might

not be able to guess on their own).○ On the opposite side of each image, is something “new” it can be turned into (once kids

have taken a few guesses, turn the image around to reveal the “new” part).■ Image: An old abandoned building being demolished and knocked down

(could be rebuilt into a new building, could be cleared away and made into a park)■ Image: Trash (could be recycled, could be turned into art)■ Image: Transformers (a little car or machine can change into an amazing robot)■ Image: Trees, plants and flowers that have all died over winter (they came

back and have new life in the spring)■ Image: Inside change (Jesus changes us on the inside! He takes our wrong

choices, and he helps us make right choices instead)○ Say: WE are the same way! Before Jesus rescued us, we were like the “old” pictures. But

when he died for our wrong choices and came back to life, he showed us that he can make ANYTHING new, even us!

● Do motions to go along with the big idea: Jesus makes us new.○ Jesus (point up)○ Makes us (point both thumbs to yourself)○ New (make “bursts” with your hands)

○ Jesus (point up)○ Makes us (point both thumbs to yourself)○ New (make “bursts” with your hands)

● Ask: Jesus went through suffering and pain and death, and he BEAT it! And he did it for you, and me. So, if you want to invite Jesus into your life, and you believe that he loves you and died for you, you can do that today. Right here, right now, you can tell Jesus that you believe he died for you, and let him make you NEW. And remember, we’re not talking about being new on the OUTSIDE. Jesus makes us new on the INSIDE. It’s an inside change.

● Say: As you think about that, let’s watch another video to remind us what Jesus did on Easter to rescue us and makes us into a new creation!

● Video: Kidspring / Lego Easter

● Say: Let’s check out a verse that describes our big idea perfectly. Can I have a volunteer read it out loud? (Call on a kid, or multiple kids, to read out loud.)

● Slide: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

● Say: Is that a good reason to celebrate? YES! So let’s celebrate right now! And I’ve got something special to help make this party even more fun: a confetti cannon! Everyone gather around and let’s get ready to party!

● Music Video: Dance● Prayer: Jesus, thank you for making us new. Please speak to every kid

in this room today, and tell them how much you love them. And if anyone wants to follow you, they can choose to do that right now (give kids a few seconds of silence). Amen!

NEED TO KNOW

Supplies: Confetti Cannon (make sure to keep it hidden until it’s ready for use!)

Instructions: Poke a hole and tear off the foil at one end of the confetti cannon. Gather kids in front of the presentation area, and aim the confetti cannon upwards over their heads. Twist the bottom of the cannon until the confetti pops! Let kids play throughout the worship song provided.

Clean up: To help with clean up, turn it into a game and tell kids to gather up and throw away as much confetti as they can for 1 minute. Otherwise, save clean up for after the service.

Page 6: NEED TO KNOW · NEED TO KNOW It’s Easter weekend! The service will be approximately 70-80 minutes long, so each section of the lesson can take a few minutes longer if needed. There’s

● Why do we need to be rescued? (We all make wrong choices and sin, so we deserve punishment. So we need a Rescuer to take our place!)

● HOW did Jesus rescue us? (He died on the cross, and then rose again and is alive today!)● Why do you think Jesus did all this for us? (Because he loves us!)● What way do you want Jesus to make you NEW?● Does anyone have questions about what it means to follow Jesus, or what the “Good News” is?

Create a garden!● Start out by asking:

○ What happens to trees, flowers and plants when it gets really cold over the winter? (They die, they become old and withered, they’re not beautiful anymore)

○ What happens when spring comes around? (They all come back to life and become new, beautiful creations!)

○ Jesus does the same with us! He makes us into new creations. ● Set out markers, scissors and glue sticks. Give each kid:

○ One garden template○ One piece of lime green paper○ One piece of dark green paper○ Three flower stickers○ Ten leaf stickers

● Encourage kids to use all their materials to create a garden full of trees, flowers, plants and anything else they want to include! Let them get creative and cut out any kinds of shapes they want from the green paper (leaves, plants, animals, bugs, etc).

● Play a game of Three Corners! Find instructions on the next page.
