2015 Annual Luncheon

2015 marks the Eleventh Anniversary of the Nashville Civic Design Center’s (NCDC) unveiling of The Plan of Nashville: Avenues to a Great City. Each year this luncheon features a visionary thought leader on issues of urban design and civic engagement. This event also provides an opportunity for the Design Center to present the work it has accomplished over the past twelve months, while highlighting projects in Nashville that illustrate how the city is moving forward in quality development, policy and practice.

The Annual Luncheon also serves as NCDC’s major fundraising event. This program has raised over $750,000 in support of NCDC’s mission and programs. Annual attendance averages over 500 design professionals, developers, business leaders, state and local elected officials, department heads and engaged citizens.

Neighborhood Planning: Designing for Equity, Health, and Affordability

“Concerns about health, quality of life, and affordability confront our everyday lives as citizens, government officials, as well as developers, planners, urban designers and archi-tects. My keynote will focus on the intersection of policy, community values, economics, and design to address the needs and livability of American cities. The presentation will feature data, history, and current examples of how these players in city building have, and continue to impact our everyday life and the health of our neighborhoods”

Daniel Hernandez is a real estate planner, developer, advi-sor, and project manager, with over 25 years of experience. He presently serves the mayor of New York City as the Deputy Commissioner for Neighborhood Strategies at the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Shaping the Healthy Community: The Nashville PlanShaping the Healthy Community is a long-term project by NCDC focusing on the relationship between the built environment and public health. Six built environment “factors” are explored in detail, including: housing, transportation, open space and parks, food resources, walkability, and neighborhood design/development, throughout a variety of community types. A book by the same name will be published by Vander-bilt University Press in 2015.

University of Tennessee Knoxville Design StudiosThe Nashville Civic Design Center (NCDC) maintains a strong partnership with the University of Tennessee Knoxville College of Architecture and Design (UTK CoAD). Through this partnership, NCDC coordinates various studies throughout the year that allow architecture students to study potential “real world” projects in Nashville. As a part of this collaborative effort, NCDC partners with UTK CoAD faculty member TK Davis to create many conceptual projects for Nashville. As a result, many of the students’ projects often turn into real life developments.

PARK(ing) DayEach year NCDC organizes Park(ing) Day, an event where multiple parking spaces are transformed into parks and seating areas for one day.The creative recreational and aesthetic installations on display show how even the smallest of public spaces can have an incredible impact.
