TASTE FOR YOURSELF:

Open Door021 794 3010opendoorrestaurant.co.za

Opening doorsBrand new restaurant Open Door is at the heart of the new buzz at Constantia Uitsig

Restaurateur and sommelier Neil Grant of Burrata and Bocca continues his

successful partnership with chef Annemarie Steenkamp at Open Door, his new venture that is taking a step away from the Italian cuisine of their two city restaurants and embracing a contemporary approach that refl ects the wine-estate setting. Here, there is a sense of light and being out of doors. The internal arches have been raised, there’s a quiet but busy open kitchen and welcoming understated decor to transform the old school building that once housed the River Café.

The menu is short but varied with stylish and sophisticated dishes that show plenty of creativity. The tuna gravlax with avocado puree, green-olive beignet, and radish and celery salad was a lovely combination

of textures and fl avours, simple and well balanced; the braised lamb’s neck with butternut was meltingly tender and provided just enough contrast for the crunchy roasted vegetables. And the dessert selection, rather than trotting out crowd-pleasing standards, shows a playfulness that keeps the palate on its toes right till the end: think a delicate aniseed panna cotta o set by guava and fennel compote and the crunch of crushed almonds, or a delightful buttermilk mousse with lime parfait and coriander emulsion served on crispy rye crumble, which already looks set to become a fi rm favourite.

This isn’t food that demands hushed concentration and serious tones. It is rather to be enjoyed in convivial camaraderie while making the acquaintance of the interesting

wines from the extensive wine cellar. Neil’s fi rst love is wine, so expect the o ering to evolve constantly as he continues to discover wines such as The Blacksmith, a subtle blend of Cinsaut and Carignan, which we enjoyed with our main course. He encourages diners to try new wine varietals, and serves really good ones by the glass. In fact, it’s worth getting into conversation with him or sommelier Matteo to fi nd exactly the right wine for your meal.

Plans are underway to move the tasting room to the front to be near the restaurant, and landscaping the dam area overlooked by Open Door’s new terrace, which will no doubt be a popular summer breakfast spot. Fresh croissants by the in-house pastry chef and a full breakfast menu add to the o ering this month.

What the team loves about where they live…

“I love the atmosphere of living in Gardens. There is almost an electricity and vibrancy in the air. I love sitting on my balcony and watching the people in the streets as they hang out with friends or rush off to their lives.” CHARIS, COPY EDITOR

“My neighbourhood, Somerset West, is special to me because it is tucked away between beautiful mountains, blue seas and a tapestry of vineyards.”MEGAN, DESIGNER

“I grew up in Table View. Apart from it being home, it reminds me of where I started as a child and where I am now as an adult. I’ve grown with my suburb, the people and the lifestyle. Green neighbourhoods, the ocean a short drive away… I love my neighbourhood for its natural beauty and lived memories.” LAUREN, ONLINE EDITOR

“What I love about living in Gardens in the City Bowl is how walkable it is. I can walk out of my fl at and be at a yoga class, there’s the City Bowl Market, picnicking in Company Gardens, or watching a movie at the Labia Cinema in fi ve minutes. It feels like home: like my own little neighbourhood.” BRIDGET, EDITORIAL CONSULTANT

“I love the architectural character of the city, from the colonial to the modern. I think it adds a richness that many other inner-cities in SA lack.” MARK, CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Not too long ago rosé wines were near the bottom of the vinous pile and something to be enjoyed

in the privacy of your own home. But as winemakers continue to craft drier, more complex rosés so the category has shu ed o its sickly sweet untrendy image to become a drink of choice on a sunny day.

The rosé taking up the most space in my collection right now is Thelema Sutherland Grenache. Although made on Helshoogte Pass above Stellenbosch, the grapes are sourced from cooler vineyards at Elgin. They have Grenache’s typical wonderful deep pink hue and the wine itself o ers up plenty of berries on the nose and has a dry, crisp and refreshing palate.

Also taking full advantage of cool-climate varieties is Creation Wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. This winery, famous for its Pinot Noir and Syrah, adds a dash of Grenache to the blend that makes up its Whale Pod Spyhopping Rosé. Expect bright red berries and lingering notes of rose petal and pomegranate.

Babylonstoren takes yet another approach to rosé, relying on Mourvèdre grapes to produce a pink stunner made in the Provençal style. The unadorned bottle puts their Mourvedre Rosé’s strawberry hue front and centre, and crisp red fruits and just a hint of spice in the glass.

On the other hand, Rosie D from Doran Vineyards in Voor-Paardeberg outside Paarl is a steal. This no-nonsense qua er should always be on hand, nicely chilled, in any self-respecting summertime fridge. Made from Pinotage grapes by talented young winemaker Martin Lamprecht, it will benefi t greatly from a few blocks of ice and a shady spot. Rosie D has a hint of strawberry and rose-water in both its colour and aroma.

The same goes for the Grenache-dominated Lekkerwijn from Franschhoek estate Solms-Delta, which has a label that is as arresting as the wine is delicious. Expect freshness as well as intense fruitiness on the palate with hints of raspberry, strawberry and apple on the nose. It goes well with smoked fi sh, cold platters and nutty hard cheeses.

Over the past few years, the roller-derby craze has hit South Africa – and South African women in

particular. We chat to Hanlie Coetzee, a Storm Riders team member and project manager of the Cape Town Rollergirls marketing committee, to find out more.

Q: Whatisrollerderby?A: Women’s flat-track roller derby is

a contact sport played on an oval flat track. Each team consists of five members and the aim is for the four blockers to stop the other team’s jammer from passing them as they skate around a track by physically bumping them down or out of the track boundaries. (No hands, elbows, head and feet as well as contact above the shoulders or below mid-thigh are allowed.) The jammer scores a point for every opposing player she passes. A bout can look quite dangerous and chaotic, but there are a lot of rules to make it safer and there is a lot of strategy involved.

Q: WhenandhowdidCapeTownRollergirlscomeabout?

A: Cape Town Rollergirls represents several roller-derby groups in the city. We initially formed in May

2012 and operated as Mother City Mayhem but the rebranding, rebuilding and coalescing of various interest groups resulted in its dissolution late the same year. That was when Cape Town Rollergirls was established. The league currently has three home teams (Storm Riders, The Rev’ettes and Scrim Reapers) and a referee squad, the Cape Town Court Marshalls.

Q: Whatarethequalitiesandskillsneededtobeastarroller-derbyplayer?

A: You need to be determined to face your fear. In the beginning, the biggest obstacle that held me back was the last-second panic that stopped me from committing to a move. Once you get over that, your abilities progress. I still feel fear, but now I also know how it feels to conquer it and that is what drives me. As far as skills go, you will acquire them with the correct mind-set. Most of the women in our league had never skated before and have become national-level skaters within three years. So time, focus and dedication are key to becoming an all-star roller-derby skater.

Make It Mine

Mass personalisation has been a growing trend for many years. As customers become

more aware of their options and specifi c in their tastes, they are no longer content with the same fi ve items in a store that are available to everyone else. There is a desire for objects and pieces that speak to the owner’s individuality, but at the same time people are less and less likely to make things themselves. And though there’s been a resurgence in heritage crafts like crocheting, sewing and even taxidermy, few people would be able or willing to make their own furniture.

In a recent Bain survey, respondents stated that they were willing to pay 20% more for products that were customised to meet their tastes. And as online retail becomes more and more popular, the trend towards such customisation is growing. The design brand TOG, for example, was launched with exactly this in mind. It creates ‘naked’ products and then allows buyers to customise them online or select a professional customiser to do it on their behalf. In South Africa, Amoq furniture is on a similar track with their open-top table legs. These allow users to take any fl at surface and turn it into a bespoke table.

As technology catches up with our desire to be di erent, we’ll see more and more brands allowing customers to make their mark on their homeware. After all, why just keep up with the Joneses when it’s just as easy (and infi nitely more interesting) to set yourself apart?

spoilt for choice.

Restaurants and barsIf you love eating out, you won’t have to look far for great restaurants to visit in Fourways. Tracey loves The Peach Café on Camdeboo Farm, where you can pick your own fruit and enjoy the famous wood-fired pizza, while Lloyd says he loves exploring the various microbreweries in the area. Copperlake Brewing Co. is one of his favourites: grab some delicious sharing platters and then test out its Taster Tray, featuring eight locally brewed beers. The Steamworks gastropub is another great option: take in the impressive décor, sip on a few cocktails and enjoy a meal with some friends.

SecurityIf you’re looking for secure living, Fourways is ideal. Choose from high-density apartment complexes, townhouse developments, housing estates or lifestyle estates like Dainfern – all of which offer a level of safety and security that’s become a priority for many Joburg residents.

With its diverse range of properties, Fourways residents comprise a good mix of people, from students and young professionals to young families and retirees. From a suburb originally made up of smallholdings, its development has been staggering. With its amenities, convenient location and ‘small town’ feel while still being located close to the Sandton CBD, this isn’t at all surprising.

How does a

suburb with its origins in a dusty

four-way stop grow into one of the fastest-growing

commercial and residential hubs in the greater Sandton area?

The secret may be in its name. With easy access routes off the William Nicol

Drive, Witkoppen Road and the N1 highway, Fourways’ location is extremely convenient, whether you need to nip into the city for work or pack your bags for a weekend away in the Magaliesberg or Hartebeespoort. There’s more to this suburb than just its location, though. Here are seven more reasons why Fourways residents love living there:

Small-town livingFourways gives you the benefits of being close to the epicentre of bustling Joburg, but you still get the upsides of small-town living. Resident Tracey Cloete says that it’s not cramped like Sandton. “You don’t feel like you’re living in Joburg – it feels more like you’re living in a small town,” she says. Fellow resident Lloyd Moran agrees: “I love being able to walk around, ride our bikes and just generally not feel like we’re living in the middle of a city.”

The outdoorsFourways is the gateway to The Cradle, and its surrounding roads are packed with cyclists every weekend. In fact,

Cycle Lab, one of Joburg’s biggest cycling shops, is in Fourways, and

every Saturday and Sunday you’ll spot Lycra-clad warriors

sipping their cappuccinos while enjoying a hearty

breakfast after their early morning

ride. Tracey loves going on trail rides in the area as well as walks, while resident Stuart Browne cites the Dainfern golf course as one of his favourites in Johannesburg.

Shopping centresFourways has everything you need when it comes to retail therapy. With Fourways Mall on your doorstep, Broadacres Shopping centre a five-minute drive away and the Design Quarter up the road, you can choose from big-name retailers or smaller boutiques and everything in between. Pick up some groceries at the Broadacres Spar – considered by many to be the best in the country – meet a friend for coffee at the trendy Design Quarter or run errands at the mall.

MontecasinoWhether it’s catching the latest international comedian on tour, visiting the arcades with your kids or trying your hand at blackjack, Gauteng’s ‘Premier Entertainment Destination’ has a wealth of activities to keep the whole family busy. Resident Nadine Smyth says that The Bird Show at Montecasino is a definite favourite of hers. “My kids love running through the secret walkways and spotting brightly coloured birds and reptiles on their way,” she says.

Family-friendly Fourways has more than enough to keep families of all ages and stages happy. From family-friendly restaurants such as The Secret Garden at Norscot Manor and Pappachinos at Pineslopes to the Farmers Market every Sunday

where you can pick up some organic produce or heading down a

Investing in property may be within your means

Many people aspiring to own property put it o because they believe that investing

in property requires a great deal of money. However, property unit trusts make it possible to invest in more than one property without being very rich or even taking out a home loan.

Ricardo Teixeira, COO: BDO Wealth Advisors, says the benefi ts of investing in a property unit trust are liquidity, the opportunity to invest in properties such as shopping malls and o ce blocks typically reserved for institutional investors, and the fact that it is a low-e ort investment. He explains that, because they are listed on the JSE, investors may sell shares in a property unit trust even if the property itself is not being sold and the shares can therefore be transferred provided there are willing buyers at the ruling market price.

“Investors could have access to an investment spread across sectors and in di erent locations for a capital

investment of as little as R500 per month or a R10,000 lump sum. It is a low-e ort investment as independent management structures take care of processes, such as rental collection and maintenance,” says Teixeira. Nadir Thokan, spokesperson: Pioneer Wealth Managers, says property unit trusts provide investors with the highest form of protection as they are highly regulated investment vehicles. He says the management and selection of underlying property portfolios are done by expert fund managers equipped with the necessary resources to consistently identify the best available opportunities. “They o er investors the opportunity to retain the best investment talent who allocate capital to the best opportunities within the listed property market and provide access to the asset class without the hassle and costs of physically managing a property portfolio. The best way to gain exposure to a number of property investments through a single point

of entry is therefore to invest in a listed property unit trust. Thanks to increased globalisation, JSE-listed property companies also have signifi cant exposure to o shore property investment opportunities, thus allowing investors to benefi t from global opportunities rather than local opportunities only,” he says. Neil Stuart-Findlay, portfolio manager: Investec Property Equity Fund, says property unit trusts allow everyone to invest in properties that ordinarily may have been beyond their means. He explains that property equity unit trusts allow those who have limited capital resources to gain exposure to commercial real estate.

“The minimum requirement for investing in a property equity unit trusts is less than the requirements for buying a residential property. Historically, the sector has delivered infl ation-beating returns aided by the underlying yield and growing income stream,” he says.

Income is not wealth

We believe that the more we are able to buy, the richer we are, and so we equate income with wealth. However, the truth is that being wealthy is not about how much you spend. It is about how much you are able to save

It is di cult not to feel fortunate to live in a modern world where healthcare is sophisticated, travel is

easy and technology simplifi es so much. We have come an enormously long way since 150 years ago when penicillin did not exist, overseas travel meant months on board a ship and Thomas Edison had not yet invented the electric light bulb.

This is a world in which having even a little bit of money gives us access to a lot more than anybody could have dreamed of before the turn of the last century. That is a great blessing, but it also brings with it a very large challenge.

Having access to so much means that there is no end to the things on which we can spend our money. We are a world of consumers, and we are encouraged to consume more at almost every turn.

The result is that we believe that the more we are able to buy, the richer we are, and so we equate income with wealth. However, the truth is that being wealthy is not about how much you spend. It is about how much you are able to save.

As South Africans, we have a big problem in this regard. Our savings rate of 15,4% of the GDP is among the worst in the world. This is not because we don’t earn enough or our cost of living is too high. In China, earnings are lower but their savings rate is 50% of the GDP. In Australia, where the cost of living is much higher, the savings rate is 22,5% of the GDP.

A big part of our problem is that we are too easily seduced into debt. Household debt as a percentage of household income in South Africa is now at 80%. We are borrowing more than we are saving.

That may mean that we have money to spend in the short term, but will be far poorer for it in the long term. We are making the wrong choices with our money.

In The Millionaire Next Door, authors Thomas J Stanley and William D Danko point out that the rich are not the ones who make fancy lifestyle choices and spend on assets that don’t appreciate. They spend less than they earn and get more pleasure from owning assets that grow in value like stocks, property and private businesses than from displaying a high-consumption lifestyle.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t enjoy life, but rather that you should only spend what you can a ord and more importantly save for yourself fi rst. Anything else is really just stealing from the future you to pay for your current pleasure.

Q: What’s your favourite thing about the area?

A: I totally love that Lonehill has lovely parks – and that the people in the neighbourhood are always walking, running and cycling. It’s also great that there is such a healthy cross-section of age groups – from young to old – who live in the area.

Q: What’s your favourite Lonehill coffee spot?

provide a simple and a ordable solution to an obvious problem, and are paid electronically at the beginning of each month, thus minimising bad debt and avoiding risks associated with cash handling. The timing is right. Of course, we need consumers to embrace e-commerce, but with smartphone use growing daily and broadband getting cheaper, coupled with property and living spaces becoming smaller and more expensive, it’s an industry with massive growth potential. With a healthy stakeholder relationship, I believe the future of SpaceBox is very bright indeed.

Q: What makes SpaceBox’s

relationship with XtraSpace so fundamental to its success?

A: Being a startup, SpaceBox is entrepreneurial at heart, technologically focused and customer-centric. XtraSpace is the leader in the South African storage industry with a vast network of facilities and a wide base of happy customers. That type of expertise, infrastructure and pioneering mind-set provides a strong support system and make for a unique relationship.

Q: What do you see as the biggest

plus of SpaceBox’s service? A: The sheer convenience it brings to

decluttering and creating space. Q: Do you think SpaceBox will

spark a craze for similar concepts around the country?

A: It would be naive to assume that the concept won’t be copied in some way, shape or form. In fact, if global trends are anything to go by, it’s inevitable.

The laid-back holiday town of Langebaan is becoming increasingly popular with people looking to settle there permanently

Living life in theslow lane

The ongoing development of the Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) in neighbouring Saldanha

is driving sales and rentals in the beautiful seaside town of Langebaan.

“Langebaan is the preferred residential area for those working at the Saldanha facility and several large companies, such as Sunrise Energy and Group Five, are already represented there,” says Riaan Redelinghuys, manager: Harcourts West Coast. “There are many subcontractors involved in the development too and it is expected that this will continue to boost the local economy – and the property market – over the next 20 to 30 years.”

According to him the town’s make-up has changed significantly in the last 10 years. “We estimate that about 60% to 65% of homeowners are permanent residents who work in Vredenburg or Saldanha, and we

expect this percentage to increase. There is still a demand for holiday or weekend homes but most buyers are looking for primary homes, and their preference is for three- or four-bedroom freehold houses with sea views.”

Private Property statistics reveal that the average price of a two-bedroom freehold property in the area is currently R950,000. A three-bedroom home will cost in the region of R1,83m and a four-bedroom property is selling for an average price of R2,6m. The average price of a one-bedroom apartment is R740,000 and a three-bedroom unit will cost in the region of R1,3m.

Jeanette van Dyk, area specialist: Chas Everitt West Coast, says the highest demand is for homes priced from R1,3m to R1,6m and for lower-priced houses, flats and units in Club Mykonos. For residential builders in the town, business is starting to boom

and many new units are being built on a speculative basis. Although there are many holiday homes available to rent, she says there is a shortage of well-priced properties for those looking to settle in the area permanently.

That said, many sellers have become more open to negotiating and sales are picking up steadily in the higher price ranges.

Property prices continue to rise steadily, mainly because of ‘purchaser migration’ from urban to rural areas. “We find that more and more city dwellers are looking for the peace and secure lifestyle of the West Coast, and are moving there permanently.

“At the moment Langebaan is seen as one of the more popular ‘holiday towns’ where buyers are finding the tranquillity and more relaxed and relaxing type of life they seek,” Van Dyk says.
