Inventions Strand Showcase

• Students create and develop a unique robot that will solve a real world problem.

• Teams need to create a display board with photos and information about the invention. (think science fair)

• Each team should be able to explain:– What their robot does– How they will market their robot– Why they chose to create this robot

• Each team will need to be prepared to demonstrate their invention multiple times.

• The campuses will be responsible for bringing all robots, displays and accessories.

• We will provide a table for the display and robot.

• We will provide feedback that will be collected and returned to the campuses.

• Theme: Olympic Sports• Objective of Showcase• Basic Challenge part 1 (Point Turn, Curve Turn, Parking

Bay, Detect Dark Line, Drive in a Square)

• Advanced Challenges part 2 (This can include any combination of skills learned in the Common Palette)

• We provide challenge boards• Challenge board do’s and don’ts– Don’t use wet glue or paint on boards– Do use glue sticks, markers or even construction

paper– All 3-D figures or decorations must be detachable

(Velcro dots work great.)– Mock up the exact design on butcher paper first

• We will provide computers• You must bring your robots and USB cords

Challenge Instructions1. All instructions for the challenges must be submitted using the PowerPoint template

provided.2. Your challenge will be based on one of the following Common Palette activities that

you choose with an Olympic Sports theme. (Point Turn, Curve Turn, Parking Bay, Detect Dark Line, Drive in a Square)

3. Your Challenge should be broken down into 2 parts. a) The first part should be easy to achieve and be based on the Common Palette

activity that you chose. Ideally this task should be able to be completed in 10 minutes or less.

b) The second part should be more difficult but attainable in the 20 minute time allotment. The task should be an extension of the first challenge in order to allow completion in the allotted time.

4. Each slide should include numbered steps and a diagram of the challenge. 5. The diagram should include images, measurements, arrows and lines to give a visual

representation of the challenge.6. When you finish your instructions delete this slide and the sample slides.7. Save the Challenge Instructions and email it to [email protected]. You will need to

save the directions with the following naming convention challenge_campus_12 (ie: parkbay_eldorado_12)

Stahl Challenge 1Detect a Dark Line

1. You have just landed on a new planet. Before

you start your mission, count down 3,2,1!

2. Go forward 55 cm.3. Turn left and stop

when he senses the black line. Scream if

you see any life form!4. Reverse 24 cm. and

stop.

Stahl Challenge 2 Detect a Dark Line

1. You have just landed on a new planet. Before you start your mission, count down 3,2,1!

2. Go forward 55 cm.3. Turn left and stop when he senses the black

line. 4. Reverse 24 cm. and stop.5. Make a right turn and go straight 25 cm. 6. Using a curved turn cruise around Azthe

meteors. Stop halfway to take a picture (use !Arm5 sound) Finish the turn and proceed down the path

7. Take a left and proceed to the mythical Dancing Alien.

8. Take a right turn and have a spin (540) the mythical Dancing Alien.

9. Proceed and take another left because it’s been a long day of exploration. Go ahead and back your space cruiser into garage A or B.

Say… “Cheese!”

Timeline of Events• Feb. 23rd - Deadline to commit to the challenge showcase or

inventions strand showcase• March 29th - Campuses must submit how many teams will be

attending. (Each team must have at least 3 people on the team.)

• April 2nd - We will send out the scheduled time and location for each of the campuses.

• April 19th - Challenge slides and rosters are due for each campus. • May 3rd - Revisions to the challenge slides are due. • May 11th - We will pick up the boards and accessories. You will be

responsible for delivering the robots and invention display. • May 12th - Robotics Showcase
