Nelson College News Friday, 28 August 2020 Kia ora tātou, It’s been lovely to meet parents at our recent cottage or parents’ information evenings. These have been an opportunity for me to meet with a smaller number of parents, introduce myself and talk about the college. Where it’s at and where it’s heading. These gatherings have been popular and due to demand I will be holding a third meeting on Tuesday 8 th September @7.00 pm. Please RSVP to [email protected] to secure your place. We’re tidying up students’ course selections and will be building our timetable over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, being in Alert Level 2 has meant that we’ve had to postpone the Year 12 Ball and are still not running full assemblies. Various sports are affected in different ways. Where possible, we have decided to send our teams to tournaments if they’re going ahead and we’re confident of students’ wellbeing. Our sports staff are liaising with each team individually around this. The government has advised that students on school buses don’t need to wear masks, but do have to if they’re travelling on public buses. We appreciate your support with this. Next week we have a Teacher Only Day (Thursday 3 rd September). I have been fortunate to secure a live presentation to staff from the world leading educationalist Andy Hargreaves to speak on ‘Collaboration and Change’. This day is followed by a mid-term break on Friday 4 th September. Kia ora tātou, It’s been lovely to meet parents at our recent cottage or parents’

information evenings. These have been an opportunity for me to meet

with a smaller number of parents, introduce myself and talk about the

college. Where it’s at and where it’s heading. These gatherings have

been popular and due to demand I will be holding a third meeting on

Tuesday 8th September @7.00 pm. Please RSVP to

[email protected] to secure your place.

We’re tidying up students’ course selections and will be building our

timetable over the next few weeks.

Unfortunately, being in Alert Level 2 has meant that we’ve had to

postpone the Year 12 Ball and are still not running full assemblies.

Various sports are affected in different ways. Where possible, we have

decided to send our teams to tournaments if they’re going ahead and

we’re confident of students’ wellbeing. Our sports staff are liaising with

each team individually around this.

The government has advised that students on school buses don’t need to

wear masks, but do have to if they’re travelling on public buses. We

appreciate your support with this.

Next week we have a Teacher Only Day (Thursday 3rd September). I have

been fortunate to secure a live presentation to staff from the world

leading educationalist Andy Hargreaves to speak on ‘Collaboration and

Change’. This day is followed by a mid-term break on Friday 4th

September.

Sports Office Snippets

Our sporting world keeps changing as the COVID-19 levels change! Winter Tournament Week starts on Monday

and we still have a couple of teams away. Sadly, for many sports their tournaments have been cancelled.

All the best to those travelling away. Travel safe, play hard and represent Nelson College with pride.

BASKETBALL

A massive congratulations to our Senior A Basketball team who have qualified for nationals. In a tight game

against Waimea College, we were up 16-15 at quarter-time, down by 5 at half-time, then went down by 12 and

fought back to be down by 2 at three-quarter time. A big final quarter saw us win 86-78. Nice work boys.

Spud Monday

According to legend, the early settlers of Nelson faced starvation in their first winter here and overcame adversity

by eating their seed potatoes – a risky move, given they would need them for the following spring (don't worry,

they replanted the eyes of the potatoes to provide the next crop). For years following, Nelsonians

commemorated this tenacity on Spud Monday on the first Monday in August. Sadly, this unique public holiday

ceased during World War II but every year Nelson College History students mark the occasion with competitive

tasks based on local history and potatoes. Congratulations go to this year’s winners, The Bill Sutch Fan Club, with

Y12 History students Keegan Shellock, Daniel Culverwell, and Joel McKay taking out the coveted Potato Head

Trophy and a sack of spuds. Well done to all boys who competed.

2020 Top of the South Readers Cup Quiz

We had two teams of Y9 students competing in the 2020 Top of the South Reader’s Cup Quiz. The Reader’s Cup is for students who enjoy reading and show great comprehension skills. The students were required to read five selected books so they could answer detailed questions relating to the books. After a marvellous morning tea and six rounds of questions, Nelson College’s team, “The Undecided” (Undecided by name and undecided by costume) with James Ben, Walter Moloney, Oliver Morton, Connor Packer and Aden Beaumont, won the General Knowledge round, and placed Third overall. Our other team, “Charlie and his Nerd Factory” took on the dress-up challenge with gusto with Thomas Goode (Willy Wonka), Henry Miller (Charlie) and Lochlan Cockerell-Brandt, Tom Irvine and Charlie Parker as the Oompa Loompas. They didn't do so well in the Quiz, but were very close to winning best dressed! Big congrats to Marlborough Girls' College for taking out the Cup!

National Schools Debating Competition

Congratulations to Ronan Thompson for his 'Highly Commended Speaker ' award at the National Schools Debating

Competition (as part of the Nelson Marlborough team) which was held via Zoom last weekend.

Cup Cakes for Daffodil Day

In support of Daffodil Day, our Year 11 Hospitality students made cupcakes. The icing procedure required intense concentration! The cupcakes will be for sale today, Friday 28th at interval outside the Food Tech Room, and in the Staffroom. Gold coin, all proceeds to the Cancer Society.

Student Rep for the School Board

Before that other Election, we have a really important one of our own for the Student Rep for the Board of Trustees. This is a one year appointment, and may seem a bit daunting, but there’s plenty of help and support available. As well as having a voice on how your school is governed, being a School Trustee gives valuable knowledge and experience for your future – plus, it will look great on your CV! - Nominations close 12noon Friday 4 September. - Voting closes 12noon Fri 18 September There’s more information at the Executive Secretary’s Office.

WE WANT YOU!

Degree Spotlight: Bachelor of Surveying (Otago University only)

Surveying is a 4 year ‘professional’ degree - this means this degree will

take you directly into a professional role as a Surveyor once you

graduate. Currently there is great demand nationally and internationally

(Covid caveat!) for surveyors. If you enjoy Geography, Physics and

Maths, and you love being outdoors – this could be the degree for you!

The learning in the degree combines practical classes, field trips,

computer lab work and academic study. You will learn how to subdivide

land, assess land for its development potential, undertake city and

environmental planning, design urban infrastructure, write resource

consents and even map the ocean floor.
