• Disease Transmission: Rodents are a serious threat to poultry biosecurity. Rodents can transmit as many as 35 different diseases, including salmonella affecting humans and domestic animals.

• Structural damage to building and equipment: Rodent activity results in physical damage to the building and to equipment. Gnawing on support structures, electric wiring, plastic curtains, insulation, and burrowing under walls and concrete walkways can cause irreversible structural damage. There is potential for a power outage or danger of fire due to chewing electric wiring and gas hoses, as well.

• Feed wastage and contamination: It has been suggested that one rat can consume as much as 25 pounds of feed per year. A moderate infestation of 200 rats can consume 2.5 ton of feed each year. With today’s feed price $400/ton, that is about $1000 loss.

If you spot a live animal:

• Adult rats can be 16 - 20 inches long, nose to tail, and often weigh between 0.5 to 1.5 lbs.

• Adult mice are often 6-8 inches in length and weigh less than .25 lbs.

• When comparing a young rat to a mouse, examine its tail. A young rat’s tail will be shorter than it’s body.

Examine the feces present:

Rodent Infrared Surveillance Technology:

Neogen Corporation offers as part of our rodenticide control program the unique infrared camera surveillance system “Night Hawk”. This two camera system allows observation of rodent activity and behavior in low light or total dark environments. The cameras can be used inside or outside and are sealed against moisture. This serves as a tool for rodenticide program evaluation and potential program changes

Step One: PREVENTClean, clear and implement preventative measures.

• Eliminate debris and other harborage for rodents in and around the facility.

• Remove easily accessible rodent food sources, including spilled feed. Eliminating food sources increases the effectiveness of rodent baits.

• Clear/mow around the facility (~3 feet) to discourage rodents from entering.

Step Two: IDENTIFYFind the location and severity of the problem.

• Examinations done at dawn or dusk work best.

• Are there fresh droppings, burrows, tracks or gnaw marks? Be sure to inspect ceilings, other elevated runways and facility grounds?

• Do you have rats, mice, or both?

Step Three: EXECUTEImplement baiting strategy according to target rodents and locations.

• Outside: Along the perimeter, place bait stations 50 feet apart for rats and 10 feet for mice. Use Havoc® Attack Blocks and replace eaten bait at least weekly to start.

• Determine areas where rats and mice will most likely find and consume the bait. Generally, these areas are along walls, by gnawed openings, beside burrows, in corners and concealed places, between floors and walls, or in locations where rats or their signs have been seen. Protect bait from rain and snow. Remove as much alternative food as possible.

• Inside: Use bait stations. Chunk or block baits can be nailed or zip-stripped directly to overhead locations. Place packs should be placed in attics, ceilings, or other hard to access areas that rodents are using. Contact Neogen for more specific baiting suggestions.

Step Four: MONITORMonitor the effectiveness of your program with record keeping.

• Rodent evidence can be monitored by regularly doing audits.

• Sample audit form can be found 2 pages following.

• Frequency of baiting should change with increased activity.

Typical Breeder Farm Exter ior & Inter ior Bait ing Strategy

• The baiting strategy will be planned according to the rodent activity determined by rodent audit or Infrared camera surveillance.

• The number of bait stations can be increased in the area where there is heavy rodent activity.

• All bait stations should have either have a bar code ID or numbered for record keeping.

• Place exterior bait stations 10’ (3m) from either side of entrance door.

• Place exterior bait stations 50’ (15 m) apart for Rat control.

• Place bait stations 10’ (3 m) apart for mice control.

• Place interior bait stations on either side of entrance doors and 100’ (30m) apart under the slatted area.

• There should be a minimum of 2 multicatch traps in the egg collection room and the egg holding room.

Brodifacoum Bait Products

ACTIVE INGREDIENT:

Brodifacoum ......................................................................... 0.005%

OTHER INGREDIENTS: ......................................................... 99.995%

TOTAL INGREDIENTS: ........................................................ 100.000%Brodifacoum is the strongest anticoagulant rodenticide available*. Havoc products combine brodifacoum with a special mixture of highly attractive bait ingredients along with patented food processing techniques. The result is a superior, single-feed rodenticide with a unique bait delivery system.

Havoc is available in pellets, chunks or blocks. The multiple dimension designs of both the Havoc Attack and the Havoc-XT Blok include a hole through the center of each block allowing for secure bait placement.

Havoc-XT’s (above left) unique shape makes it easy for rats and mice to gnaw on. Havoc pellets (left) are available in bulk or in convenient place packs.

Bromethal in Bait Products

Active Ingredient:

Bromethalin [63333-35-7] ...................................................... 0.01%

Other Ingredients: ................................................................. 99.99%

Total Ingredients: .............................................................. 100.000%

Bromethalin was developed to combat a worldwide perceived problem of rodent resistance to warfarin-like anticoagulant rodenticides. Bromethalin is not an anticoagulant but a highly potent neurotoxin rodenticide that provides a lethal dose to rodents in a single feeding. Bromethalin attacks the central nervous system; rodents usually consume a lethal dose within a single night’s feeding, with first dead rodents appearing within 2 days. Available in bait blocks or place packs. CyKill is best used as part of Neogen’s Rotational Baiting Program.

CyKill pellets (left) come in ready-to-use place packs. No need to open pouches; rodents will eat through the package. CyKill Blocks (right) are highly palatable and have a center hole for easy placement.

• Second generation anticoagulant—the strongest available*

• May kill both rats and mice in a single night’s feeding

• Available in chunks, pellets and block configurations

• Contains Bitrex®, a child and non-target deterrent

• Havoc-XT blocks are weather-resistant and low-profile

*based on comparable LD50 values of currently registered rodenticide active ingredients.

• Palatable bait is preferred over most feeds, food sources and competitive baits

• Rodents stop feeding after consuming a lethal dose; this results in a consumption of 80% less bait than with traditional baits

• No known resistance, neurotoxicant formulation

• Reduced risk of secondary toxicity

• Gray color keeps internal temperature cooler, resulting in less melted bait

• Both sides of bait chamber can also house standard plastic mouse snap traps

Ramik Multi-Catch• Non-toxic, child and pet safe

• No assembly required

• Can be used with a glue board (1 board included)

• Trap can hold over a dozen mice at a time

• Clear window for easy viewing

Difenacoum Bait Products

Bait Stat ions

Difenacoum is the latest in rodent control. This hard-hitting second generation anticoagulant can knock down rodents in 4–5 days. Difenacoum has outstanding control of mice. It takes over 2 times as much bromadiolone to kill mice than with Di-Kill. Available in blocks, place packs and bulk pellet configurations. Di-Kill is best used as part of Neogen’s Rotational Baiting Program.

Active Ingredient:

Difenacoum .......................................................................... 0.005%

Other Ingredients: ............................................................... 99.995%

Total Ingredients: .............................................................. 100.000%

Di-Kill pellets (left) come in convenient place packs. No need to open the pouches—rodents eat through the packaging. Di-Kill Blocks (right) are made with gnawing edges and an attractive formulation to encourage palatability.

• Hard-hitting second generation anticoagulant

• Palatable formulation made from food-grade ingredients

• Lower primary toxicity—less toxic than other bait to non-target animals*

• Kills warfarin-resistant rodents

*based on comparable LD50 values of currently registered rodenticide active ingredients.

Rodent Café• Low-profile design for increased

rodent activity

• High-capacity bait chamber built to allow horizontal and vertical bait placement

• Ramped entrance into bait chamber helps prevent any water from entering and contaminating bait
