Unit 3: Body Systems 1

2 Parts to the Nervous System

•  Brain •  Spinal Cord

•  Peripheral Nerves

Central Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System

Functions of the Nervous System

•  Main Job: Communication and coordination – Adapt and respond to changes

from both inside and outside the body

•  Parts: Two main divisions 1. Central nervous system

(CNS): brain and spinal cord 2. Peripheral nervous system

(PNS)- the nerves

Neuron •  Basic structural unit of the nervous

system •  Passes signals throughout the body

Unit 3: Body Systems 2

Parts of a neuron Cell body- contains the nucleus and other organelles Dendrites- transmit electrical impulses TO the cell body Axon- transmits impulse AWAY from the cell body axons can be several feet long Myelin Sheath: Protects and insulates the axon so the nerve signal doesn’t escape!

Myelin Sheath:

How are neurons connected? •  Synapses

– The Gap Between Neurons

AXON

The synapse - where the action happens

The next cell’s plasma membrane

What is this in the membrane?

Transport protein

Close up look at your synapse:

What passes between Neurons? Chemicals called Neurotransmitters

Example: Acetocholine

Neuron

•  What passes between neurons (the synapse)?

Rendering of how much of the brain is allotted to each sense

• Multiple Sclerosis: • Many Scares – body attaching brain = Autoimmune disease

• Epilepsy: • Rapid fire of all nerves = seizure

Drugs = neuron death
