Yaakov Kirshner is a famous Israeli cartoonist whose worksare a constant reminder of the satirical and ironic aspectsof life, not only in Israel but also in the general human con-dition. A few years ago, he drew a cartoon entitled "Fear ofFlying: A Brief History."
The panels read:1. Back in the 50s and 60s, “Will my plane crash?”2. Then the next decades brought us, “Will my plane get hijacked?"3. Since 9/11 we've heard, “Will terrorists blow up my plane?”4. And today it's, “Will the airport x-ray machine give me cancer?"
As Roseanne Roseannadanna on the early Saturday NightLive Show would say, "It's always something."
Recently, I have been hearing a great deal of talk from ourmembers expressing fear.
"How can we go to New York? It might be the next target!"
"I am afraid to let my children go to the park alone."
"We are not sure about how safe it is for our kids to playsports."
"Should we be afraid to inoculate our little ones, eventhough the doctor says it is safe and necessary?"
"Which restaurants are clean enough to eat in thesedays?"
The list goes on and on. And of course, it includes Israel.
"Rabbi, how can we take our family to Israel when there isso much uncertainty and violence over there?"
On top of those fears, we have our anxiety raised everyday by the 24/7 screaming news media highlighting everysingle violent event anywhere in the globe.
The news is almost never reassuring and supportive; itplays on our fears and even our nightmares in order tocatch our attention. And during this election cycle, a num-ber of self-serving politicians continue to play on thebasest of American fears by hate-mongering and spewing
demagoguery.
Although some fear is natural and even necessary for ourown protection and well-being, it is not helpful when webecome paralyzed and unable to live our lives freely because of it. There are situations where the only answeris medical treatment for extreme anxiety. Most of us arenot in that category. Most of us can address our anxieties,if we decide to do so.
Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav famously wrote, "The world isa narrow bridge; the essence of life is not to allow yourselfto fear." Yes, there are dangers, real and imagined. However, unless we cross the bridge, we will never trulylive. Our choice is to embrace life with its risks. RabbiNachman implores us to resist the fear and permit us to rejoice and experience the beauty and variety of life.
This month, Rabbis Pomerantz and Davis will be joininghundreds of Reform rabbis in a journey to Israel for theCentral Conference of American Rabbis convention.Birthright groups will continue to visit and guideyoung adults as they become committed Jews in their encounter with the Jewish State. Many of our college students are studying and working right now in Israel. And our teens traverse the globe with jTravel, as our families from the School For Living Judaism go into manyparts of our community to learn and do Jewishly. On Mitzvah Day, hundreds of our families journeyed to all corners of Miami-Dade County to perform acts of lovingkindness. The essence of life is not to allow yourself to be overcome by fear.
We are taking a family trip to Israel in June. Do not let yourfears cause you to miss this life-changing opportunity.Join us and have the summer of your life.
Contact me or Cantor Haas and we will sign up you andyour family. There has never been a better or safer time togo than now. I am excited to lead you to the Holy Land. Are you ready to come on board?
A special informational meeting will take place at the Temple on Sunday, February 28 at 11:00 am. See youthere.

Dear Families,
The foundation for lifelong Jewish learning and living islaid during our children’s early years, first in the homeand then within the community. Young children naturallyembrace experiences that foster Jewish identity whenthese experiences are intentionally built within nurturingand caring environments. When rich, meaningful and interactive experiences are relationally transmitted fromgeneration to generation, the base necessary for a lifetime of Jewish learning and living is established.
Our Jewish community is diverse in our practices, spirituality, commitments, and family structures. Withinthis diversity we have a common bond. Our unified hopeis that our children develop their Jewish identity and become moral community members. We want them togrow to be people who respect and take care of one another, while working to repair our world.
Young children are naturally curious about the worldaround them. Given the opportunity to explore nature, they become actively involved in learning about their existence. The creation of our world is accounted for inour Torah. Every living part of nature is part of our Jewishexistence. Our weekly celebration of Shabbat reminds usof the seven days it took to create the world. Purposefulexperiences surrounding this day of rest and our naturalenvironment can support our children’s understandingsof their Jewish heritage.
We live in beautiful South Florida! You can take a walk on the beach. Watching the sun rise can be a spiritual experience for people of all ages! Once again, this directly connects to our Creation Story. When we witnessthis natural wonder, we can almost feel the beginning oftime when God said, “Let there be light.” During theseearly morning hours you can hear the birds chirping, thefrogs croaking and you can smell the different fragrances
of the flowers, grass and sea. These awakening hours showerour world with a beautiful sense of harmony! It is a perfecttime to reflect on our story of Creation and to thank God forall of our wondrous creations.
Celebrating Shabbat offers us a weekly opportunity for thefamily to share a Jewish ritual together. Directly involvingchildren in the plans and preparation for Shabbat empowersthem and leads them to developing a sense of ownershipwithin the experience. Allowing the children to become actively involved in the food preparation and the setting ofthe table creates a wonderfully active family experience.
Havdalah, the conclusion of Shabbat, is another meaningfulceremony that fascinates children. Your family can share theexcitement of looking up to the sky and waiting for the firstthree stars to appear. Observing the braided candle, tastingthe sweet wine and smelling the fragrant spices in the spicebox can all affect our senses. This invites us to become a partof the process of the transition from Shabbat to the rest of theweek. Making spice boxes and candles can be great fun forthe entire family.
Constructing this foundational base of life-long Jewish learning and living does not require any technology or expensive equipment. It just needs sacred time and space for quality family encounters. These “shared times” can offerinvaluable memories that will nurture our souls and spiritsforever!
Enjoy!
B’Shalom,
Margie

A series of Friday evening services at 6:00 pm (Sanctuary)
February 19, 26 • March 4April 1, 15 • May 20, 27 • June 3
Your clergy team is always seeking ways to enhance theShabbat worship experience. One of the ways Reform synagogues across the country do is to introduce addi-tional instrumentation in worship. This is actually a returnto ancient practice, similar to the days when worship inthe ancient Temple in Jerusalem included a large choir
and grand instrumentation.
With the vision and support of the Singerman family,“Shabbat Fusion” begins at Temple Beth Sholom. Utilizing music students and graduates of the Frost
School of Music from the University of Miami, our Fridayevening services will be enhanced by creating musicalarrangements with added instrumentation. As the word“fusion” implies, we will produce an eclectic blend of ourJewish musical tradition. The series will run from Januarythrough June. Many of the evenings will begin with a“Pre-Neg” at 5:30 pm to share a nosh and toast with your congregants, followed by the service at 6:00 pm
in the Sanctuary.
Come experience “Shabbat Fusion.”

The School for Living Judaism
Yael DadounPrincipal Educator
The Mordujovich family has been members at TempleBeth Sholom for over 35 years. When Malka and Jorge’sdaughter, Sandra, passed away at too young an age, they decided to start a named fund in Sandra’s memoryto support causes that were important to Sandra. Sandrawas an educator who loved to teach children about theSiddur and other aspects of Judaism.
Temple Beth Sholom is blessed to have so many vision-ary member families who have graciously decided to es-tablish specific named funds in order to support a certainarea of the Temple where they see a particular need. Those funds are for a specific purpose and others maycontribute to them after they have been established.
Through the reimagined School for Living Judaism(SLJ), a 6th and 7th grade pre B’nei Mitzvah class isbeing taught by our principal, Yael Dadoun, on Mondayafternoons. The focus of the class is to bridge the gapbetween Jewish childhood and adulthood education ina meaningful, tangible, hands on learning environment. Each week the students are charged with different dilemmas that they delve into in a group setting. Theylearn about themselves from each other; this is just the beginning of their Jewish journey, not the end. We aremoving away from the idea that there is one teacher inthe room. Each student is in charge of their own learning. This environment empowers them to be responsible or their own Judaism.
In December, we brought in Avi Zuckerman, an artistfrom New York who owns Art with Avi. Avi was a guesteducator as a part of our reimagined SLJ. He led the YadProject, which was generously funded by the SandraMordujovich Memorial Fund. During our session, 60 students had the unique and life-changing opportunityto create their own Yad. This is not only a life-long gift, but this project also sets up our students to be comfort-able in a synagogue setting and on the Bimah through-out their lives. Each student made a Yad with his/herHebrew name on it, created with silver beads. The Yad
is a tangible symbol representing a multitude of opportunities during our students’ Jewish journey.Going forward, every time they read from the Torah or go on the Bimah, they will bring this symbol from TBS with them.
When the Mordujovich family established this fund, theirintention was to keep Sandra’s legacy alive by infusingJewish education into our students’ daily lives. We areblessed to be able to support so many Jewish journeysthrough this fund. Last fall, the fund provided our younglearners from grades three through six with brand newchild-friendly Siddurim from which to pray and learn.
These Siddurim are the same prayer books that we usein our Sanctuary and Chapel, Mishkan T’filla, but havebeen created specifically for children. They make prayerapproachable, are colorful for our visual learners andalso act as a study guide. Because of the SLJ schedulechange this year, we’ve carved out time to make T’fillamore meaningful and are so grateful to include the Sid-durim. We invite you to take a look at them (on the tableoutside the Chapel) or join our SLJ T’filla on Mondaysand Wednesdays from 3:45-4:15 pm.
Temple Beth Sholom is in the process of an educationalrevolution. The SLJ, in partnership with our parents, islooking to build a strong Jewish future with children who are connected to their Jewish roots and Jewishcommunity. The SLJ provides a space for kids to articulate their Jewish identity and connect amongsteach other. They are the next generation to lead the Jewish people.
