Chapter 1: Installation Overview

The NetControl (formerly known as Enterprise Server) platform provides a centralized interface to configure and manage individual services and provides licensed NetPro products access to shared services and data. In addition, NetPro’s Active Directory Management Console (ADMC), which is part of NetControl, allows you to administer Active Directory objects similar to Microsoft’s Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) interface. With ADMC, you can enforce approval processes for tighter security, while providing compliance for regulations. You can also add business logic to automate common Active Directory tasks, giving you greater control and scalability.

This document defines the system requirements for NetControl and procedures for installing, upgrading and removing the NetControl components. It also explains how to deploy and license NetPro products that build on the NetControl platform.

Before You BeginIt is recommended that you perform the following steps before you begin the installation procedure:

• Review the Requirements and Permissions for the NetControl components• Review the Requirements for the NetPro application to be deployed (Refer to the

documentation for that application for additional requirements.)• Review the complete installation process• Read the Release Notes for updated information • Contact NetPro for license files to enable the NetControl and application software

License files are required to enable the NetControl software. In evaluation mode, you will have full functional use of NetControl and all its components; however, the product is licensed to expire on a specific date. If your evaluation license expires, NetControl will no longer function.

2 NetControl

RequirementsNetControl is a platform that provides shared services for licensed NetPro applications that build on this platform and provides access to NetPro’s ADMC. NetControl consists of three main components:

• NetControl Console • NetControl Service• NetControl Agent(s)

NetControl is a 32-bit application that can be installed on 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. However, since NetControl is a 32-bit application it will use WOW64 in 64-bit environments.

NOTE: Some NetPro applications that build upon the NetControl platform have additional system requirements. Please refer to the Requirements section in the Introduction Chapter of the documentation for each individual application for a list of these additional requirements.

NetControl Console

Hardware• Minimum requirements to support host OS

Software and Configuration• Windows XP or above (minimal Vista/Windows 2008 support)• Microsoft’s .NET Framework v2.0 • Windows Active Directory Management tools must be installed to use the Active

Directory Management Console (ADMC)• adminpack (Windows 2003 Administration Tools Pack) in Windows 2003 and

earlier• RSAT pack (Remote Server Administration Tools) in Vista/Windows Server 2008

Minimum PermissionsThe user running the console should have Local Administrator rights. If this is not possible, the following minimum rights are needed:

• User must have the rights to install software (required for plug-in updates to work). Members of the Administrators or Power Users groups have this right by default. Please reference the following Microsoft link for more information:

• Default Access Control Settings in Windows Server 2003

WarningNetControl 3.x installs an ADUC extension which allows you to use the workflow and provisioning rules defined through the ADMC. Do NOT install the NetControl Console/ADUC Extension on a machine with Exchange tools. See Appendix B: Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) Extension in the NetControl Administrator’s Guide for more details.

• User must have write access to:

Windows XP• Documents and Settings\Logged_On_User_Profile\Application Data• Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

Windows Vista• Users\Logged_On_User_Profile\Application Data • Users\All Users\Application Data

SQL Server PermissionsConsole users DO NOT need access to SQL.

NetControl Service

Hardware• Minimum requirements to support host OS

Software and Configuration• NetControl can be installed on a member server (recommended) or domain controller• Windows 2000 or above• Microsoft’s .NET Framework v2.0• The NetControl Service may be installed and configured with a 32-bit or 64-bit local or

remote instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP4, MSDE SP4, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or Microsoft SQL Express with Browser Service running (Browser Service may be disabled on a default install of Microsoft SQL Express.). (SQL Server 2005 is recommended.)

• When installing the service on a Windows 2008 server, port 52520 must be open on the firewall

NOTE: NetControl is supported on Windows Server 2008 Full. Deployment on Windows 2008 DCs, RODCs, or Server Core is not supported. The installation will not block the deployment, however, the user will be presented with a “Server not found. Verify that the specified server exists. The server name can not be empty.” error message during the installation.

Minimum PermissionsThe service account associated with the NetControl Service should have Local Administrator rights and be an Administrator in the domain where the machine account resides to create the SCP. If this is not possible, the following minimum rights are needed:

Local Machine• Local Administrative Rights

• Local Admin rights are needed to automatically create the ODBC connection to a remote SQL Server. The ODBC connection can be manually created using ODBC manager, then Local Admin rights are not necessary. If the SQL Server is on the local machine, the account does not require these rights.

• Logon as a Service (This is granted by the installer)

System OverviewNetControl provides a centralized interface to configure and manage individual services as well as providing licensed NetPro applications access to shared services and data. The NetControl platform consists of three main components:

• NetControl Console - Provides the user interface to the NetControl Service, the Active Directory Management Console (ADMC) and deployed NetPro applications. From the console, you can setup and configure NetControl shared resources, such as schedules, agent group, computer lists, etc., which can then be used by individual NetPro applications after they are deployed. When NetPro applications are deployed, additional application-specific components will be deployed and made available for use through the NetControl console.

• NetControl Service - The service is a core component of NetControl. Communication between the console and service provides you the ability to gain access to application data and to configure the application. The console locates the NetControl service via a Service Connection Point (SCP) and initiates the necessary communication.Since the service is your gateway into the application, the security model is housed here.

• NetControl Agent - Agents process the workload defined by the individual NetPro applications. Agents communicate with the SQL server database on a configured interval to receive a list of actions that must be processed.

Installation OverviewThe self-extracting package includes the following files:

• NetPro NetControl Server.msi - This msi installs the NetControl service. This service provides the console a gateway into the application. Additionally, this service will be responsible for communicating with SQL on the users’ behalf. Finally, this component will deploy agents to machines in the enterprise.

• NetPro NetControl Console.msi - This msi installs the base NetControl console. The console provides users access and control over the application components.NOTE: The .msi files are signed and can be installed on Vista computers.

Chapter 4: Upgrading NetControl Components

If you are running Enterprise Server 2.6.x, you can upgrade to NetControl 3.x; however, if you are running an earlier version of Enterprise Server, you will need to uninstall Enterprise Server and reinstall NetControl. In addition, you must be running the latest versions of the NetPro plug-in applications. See the note below for the application versions that are compatible with the new NetControl console.

NOTE: No change in licensing information is required to upgrade to NetControl 3.x. You can continue using your existing valid license keys. However, if you continue to use an existing Enterprise Server license, the reference displayed in the license manager will remain ‘Enterprise Server’ and not ‘NetControl’.

NOTE: Upgrading the NetControl platform will have no impact on the NetPro applications you may have previously deployed providing you are running at least the minimum version as listed below:

• AccessManager/AccessReporter 3.0.x• GPOADmin 2.1.x• LogADmin 3.0.x• Message Analysis 1.0.x• NetPro Business Insight 3.0.x• ReportADmin for ACS 1.0.x

Versions prior to those listed above, will NOT work with the new NetControl console.

If you are running a previous version, in order to use the NetControl console, you will be required to follow these steps:

• Stop all NetControl agents• Uninstall the ‘old’ plug-in application(s)• Upgrade to NetControl 3.x (service, database and console)• Reinstall the latest version of your plug-in application(s)• Start the NetControl agents
