    1 NetApp FAS2500 Overview

    The NetApp® FAS2500 hybrid storage array provides more value for your money than any other system

    in its class. From hybrid to all-flash configurations, FAS2500 offers a wide variety of price/performancechoices to meet your budget and speed requirements.

    By delivering more on-board ports to support drives, clusters, and host connectivity, the FAS2500 offersexceptional flexibility. FAS2550 (FAS2552 and FAS2554) has integrated unified target adapter 2 (UTA2)ports that support Ethernet (1GbE or 10GbE )and Fibre Channel (8Gb FC or 16Gb FC), so your storage isready on day one for whatever choices the future holds. FAS2520 comes with 10GBASE-T on-board portwhich can also work at GbE speed and it helps to reduce infrastructure costs.

    The FAS2552 and FAS2554 are based on the NetApp leading-edge SAS storage shelf technology andprovide investment protection by allowing controller conversion into a shelf that can then be connected tohigher-end storage controllers. The FAS2520 also leverages NetApp SAS storage shelf technology,

    including using the same capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) as the DS2246,DS4243, and DS4246.

    The FAS2500 features an Intel® chipset and leverages high-performance memory modules and system

    memory to accelerate and optimize writes, which maximizes application throughput. Building on thisoptimization, FAS2520 has an increased maximum drive count of 84 drives to keep up with continualgrowth in storage demands.

    With the NetApp Data ONTAP® 8.3, the FAS2500 series supports 16TB flash in hybrid arrays and offers

    significant improvement in storage efficiency.

    What are the FAS2500 model numbers?

     Answer: The model numbers are FAS2552, FAS2554, and FAS2520.

    What are the new FAS2500 model transitions?

     Answer:

      FAS2552 replaces FAS2240-2.

      FAS2554 replaces FAS2240-4.

      FAS2520 replaces FAS2220.

    What are the key features in the FAS2500 family?

     Answer: The key features are:

      Intel Jasper chipset

    Does the FAS2500 support an expansion with a mezzanine card?

     Answer: No, the FAS2500 does not support a mezzanine card.

    Which model string extensions are used to denote HA?

     Answer:

      FAS2500 single-controller model strings are FAS2552, FAS2554, and FAS2520.

      FAS2500 dual-controller model strings are FAS2552A, FAS2554A, and FAS2520A.

    Are the FAS2500 controllers hot-swappable?

     Answer: Yes, the FAS2500 controller is hot-swappable and, it is important to note, it does not require that

    you turn off either power supply unit (PSU).

    Are the FAS2552 and FAS2554 controllers the same for both models?

     Answer: Yes, the same PCM is used in the FAS2552 and the FAS2554 and automatically picks up the

    model type based on the chassis in which it boots up. For sparing efficiency purposes, only one PCM is

    needed for a site with both FAS2552 and FAS2554 models.

    Can a FAS2550 controller be moved between a FAS2552 and a FAS2554?

     Answer: Yes, the PCM can be moved between FAS2552 and FAS2554 models and automatically picks

    up the correct model type after it has been booted up in the new chassis. However, you may have to

    change the ha-config setting for the controller or the chassis from the maintenance menu in the new

    configuration. When moving between HA and standalone configurations, the controller and chassis each

    must have its ha-config setting changed. Details about changing this setting are covered in the “Data

    ONTAP High-Availability Configuration Guide” on the NetApp Support site.

    What is the FAS2500 chassis ID set to in manufacturing?

     Answer: The FAS2500 chassis is set to ID 00 in manufacturing.

    Can a FAS2500 controller be inserted into the FAS2200? Answer: No, FAS2500 controllers cannot be placed in a FAS2200 and they are not supported.

    3 FAS2500 HA and Standalone Configurations

    Which standalone and HA configurations are supported on the FAS2500?

     Answer: Table 1 lists the configurations supported on the FAS2500.

    Which bay is populated on FAS2500 standalone configurations?

     Answer: The FAS2552 and FAS2520 should be in the left bay (slot A) when you look at the rear of the

    chassis. FAS2554 should have the PCM in the top bay (slot A).

    Are PCM blanks interchangeable between FAS2552 and FAS2554?

     Answer: No, the PCM blanks are not interchangeable and are keyed to prevent them from being used in

    the wrong chassis.

    Are dual-chassis HA configurations possible on the FAS2500 series?

     Answer: No, this series does not support dual-chassis HA configurations.

    Is NetApp MetroCluster software available on the FAS2500 series?

     Answer: No, MetroCluster ™

     technology is not available on the FAS2500 series.

    Which field upgrades are available with the FAS2500?

     Answer: All FAS2500 standalone controllers can have a second controller of the same model added to

    become HA.

    The FAS2500 can have additional external SSD, SAS, or SATA storage added later. External shelves

    purchased with a FAS2500 can be migrated to higher-end controllers as part of an upgrade.

    The FAS2550 PCMs can be replaced with IOM3 or IOM6 on FAS2554 or with IOM6 on FAS2552 and

    connected to higher-end controllers. The FAS2520 internal-capacity HDDs and SSDs can be migrated toDS4243 or DS4246 shelves without having to copy data when upgrading from the FAS2520.  

    Upgrading from FAS2200 to FAS2500 by swapping controllers and using the same chassis is not

    supported. Purchase of new controllers in new chassis is required.

    Does hardware-assisted takeover work on the FAS2500?

     Answer: Yes. Hardware-assisted takeover on the FAS2500 uses the SP, and the hardware-assisted

    takeover functionality is similar to that of the SP in the FAS2200, FAS/V3200, and FAS/V6200 controller

    families.

    What is the interconnect in FAS2500 HA configurations?

     Answer: FAS2500 HA is supported within the same chassis, and the HA interconnect uses InfiniBandpaths over the backplane.

    Are there any single points of failure in the FAS2500?

     Answer: Although the chassis backplane is not fault tolerant, there are no active components on the

    backplane that controllers rely on to remain in a running state. This passive backplane is a highly reliable

    component that is very unlikely to cause an outage on a FAS2500 series system. Reliable passive

    backplanes are used in almost all modular storage systems with two controllers in a single chassis, as

    well as network switches.

    Is the FAS2500 series also available as NetApp V-Series systems?

     Answer: No, the FAS2500 is not supported in V-Series configurations.

    Is a NetApp FlexCache version of the FAS2500 available?

     Answer: No, the FAS2500 does not have a FlexCache® personality option.

    Does the FAS2500 support NetApp SnapLock software?

     Answer: Yes, SnapLock® technology is supported.

    How much memory and NVMEM / NVRAM does the FAS2500 have?

     Answer: Table 2 shows system memory.

    What are the hyperthreaded cores on the FAS2500?

     Answer: The FAS2500 processor has hyperthreading capabilit ies. Data ONTAP uses eight cores in an

    HA FAS2500. Utilities such as sysstat –M or statit also report the number of hyperthreaded cores

    versus the physical cores.

    Which Data ONTAP release is required for the FAS2500?

     Answer: The FAS2500 is supported starting with Data ONTAP 8.2.2 RC1 and later releases.

    Which Data ONTAP build does the FAS2500 use?

     Answer: The FAS2500 uses the x86_64 build. The same build supports FAS2200 platforms based on

    Intel.

    How are NVMEM contents protected on the FAS2500 upon dirty shutdown?

     Answer: As with the FAS2200 series, the FAS2500 series uses battery-backed-up system memory, called

    NVMEM, and it provides functionality similar to that of NVRAM on other FAS platforms. Unlike NVRAM,

    which uses separate battery-backed-up memory, NVMEM uses space carved out of the battery-backed-

    up main system memory to provide NVMEM functionality. On the FAS2500, the DIMM slot closest to the

    NVMEM battery is backed up by the battery to maintain the contents in the event of a dirty shutdown.

    How long does it take for the FAS2500 NVMEM battery to charge?

     Answer: The NVMEM battery lasts at least 72 hours, and it takes 15 hours to charge a completely

    discharged NVMEM battery.

    Does the FAS2500 have an LCD display?

     Answer: No, the FAS2500 does not have an LCD display. However, LEDs are provided on the chassis

    front to help determine the state of the controller. Remote management has proven to be the primary

    Does the FAS2500 series support remote management?

     Answer: The FAS2500 uses the service processor (SP) deployed on the FAS2200 or FAS8000 series.

    The SP has all the features of an RLM and a BMC, along with new features that improve RASM

    capabilities. The SP firmware level version is 2.2.2.

    What are the service processor management features?

     Answer: The SP performs FRU reporting and tracking, monitors and reports on internal sensors, reports

    on and can set LED states, and actively manages fan speed.

    In addition to the 10/100/1000 Ethernet management port interface (the external management port is

    shared by the SP and e0M), the SP can also be accessed from the serial console by toggling with Ctrl-G.

    Use Ctrl-D to get back to the serial console. e0M now has an increased speed of 1000Mbps.

    Is the SP connected to both the Ethernet and the serial console?

     Answer: The SP is always connected to the Ethernet and serial console, and it can be accessed from

    either. If the SP is accessed over the Ethernet, you can toggle to the serial console with Ctrl-D. If you arelogged in to the serial console, you can toggle into the SP by using Ctrl-G. To get back to the serial

    console, toggle with Ctrl-D.

    Is the SP an FRU like the RLM?

     Answer: No, the SP is integrated on the motherboard, but it runs its own kernel outside Data ONTAP and

    is always available.

    Is there a new command to administer the SP?

     Answer: Yes, Data ONTAP has added a new command to administer the SP. The new command is sp.

    The setup command also prompts for the TCP/IP information needed to use the SP over the Ethernet.

    What are the recommended SP firmware levels?

     Answer: The FAS2500 uses system-level diagnostics, or SLDIAG, in place of the older SYSDIAG on most

    platforms. SLDIAG is accessed by using maintenance mode during boot-up. If sysdiag is entered at the

    loader prompt, the system boots into maintenance mode.

    What is the boot medium in the FAS2500?

     Answer: The FAS2500 uses a USB flash instead of CompactFlash. The USB flash, which is an FRU item,

    offers the same reliability as CompactFlash.

    The FAS2200, FAS/V3200, and FAS/V6200 also use a USB flash for boot media.

     Answer: Unified target adapter 2 (UTA2) ports can be configured as 8Gb FC, 16Gb FC, 1GbE Optical

    SFP or 1GbE Copper SFP or 10GbE Optical, and, in the case 10GbE Optical supports FCoE, iSCSI,

    NFS, and CIFS. 1GbE supports iSCSI, NFS, and CIFS. With the addition of FC capabilities, UTA2 hasbecome the second generation of NetApp UTA ports.

    Does the FAS2500 have on-board UTA2 ports?

     Answer: Yes, the FAS2500 has on-board UTA2 ports. The FAS2552 and FAS2554 have four UTA2 ports

    per controller, and the FAS2520 has no on-board UTA2 ports.

    What are the configuration rules for UTA2 ports?

     Answer: UTA2 ports are based on dual-port ASICs, and both ports have to be to set to the same

    personality. Both ports on the UTA2 ports share the same ASIC and have to be set to the same type:

    1GbE, 10GbE, 8Gb FC, or 16Gb FC.

    When UTA2 ports are set to an FC personality, individual ports on the ASIC can be set to either target orinitiator mode. ASIC with 16Gb FC can autorange its speed to 8Gb or 4Gb, while ASIC with 8Gb FC can

    autorange its speed only to 4Gb and not to 2Gb.

     Answer: The maximum shelf depth for stacks containing SSDs is three. This applies to pure SSD stacks.

    What is the maximum shelf depth for stacks with all HDDs or Flash Pool?

    Can external DS2246 and DS4243 external shelves be mixed on the FAS2500?

     Answer: Yes, you can mix DS2246 and DS4243 shelves on a single FAS2552 or FAS2554 SAS stack,but you should minimize transitions between the two shelf types. Note that mixing DS2246 and DS4243

    shelves is supported only on FAS2520, FAS2552 and FAS2554 and FAS2200.

    Can the FAS2552 and FAS2554 be converted to a storage shelf?

     Answer: Yes, the FAS2552 and FAS2554 can be converted to a storage shelf by changing the PCM with

     Answer: Advanced drive partitioning is introduced in Data ONTAP 8.3 to improve usable capacity and

    storage efficiency. Advanced drive partitioning is a way of provisioning storage to improve storage

    efficiency. HDD partitioning is only available in entry platforms with Data ONTAP 8.3: FAS2500 and

    FAS2200. Increased usable capacity is a benefit.

    What are the types of advanced drive partitioning? Answer: Following are the types of advanced drive partitioning:

     –  Root-Data Partitioning

      Applies to all-HDD and all-SSD configurations

    How can FAS2500 systems be ordered with advanced drive partitioning?

     Answer: PTO bundles will be shipped with Data ONTAP 8.3 by default and will have advanced drive

    partitioning enabled. CTO bundles will give an option to select from Data ONTAP 8.2.2RC1 or 8.3.

    Selecting Data ONTAP 8.3 will enable advanced drive partitioning in the shipped system.

    Does the customer need to perform any additional setup on FAS2500 with Data ONTAP 8.3?

     Answer: No additional configuration is required. In the case of Flash Pool, the customer has the flexibility

    to partition Flash Pools to improve efficiency.

    Is advanced drive partitioning supported on 7-Mode?

     Answer: The advanced drive partitioning is NOT supported in 7-Mode and is available only with Data

    ONTAP 8.3.

    Can I upgrade FAS2500 with Data ONTAP 8.2.2 clustered Data ONTAP systems to Data ONTAP8.3?

     Answer: Yes. However, it is a disruptive procedure.

    What is the upgrade procedure to Data ONTAP 8.3 with advanced drive partitioning?

      Upgrading existing FAS2500 clustered Data ONTAP platforms with clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.2p to

    How many fans does the FAS2500 chassis have?

     Answer: There are two fans in the FAS2552 and FAS2520 chassis and four fans in the FAS2554 chassis.

    Are the FAS2500 fans assigned to a particular chassis bay?

     Answer: Yes, there is one fan for each bay in FAS2552 and FAS2520 and there are two fans for each bay

    in FAS2554.

    How are the FAS2500 fan speeds set?

     Answer: The SP on each controller sets the fan speed based on temperatures on the controller. If the SP

    malfunctions, the processor complex sets the fan speed.

    Which type of fan and power supply failures can the FAS2550 withstand?

     Answer: The FAS2552 can run indefinitely with one failed power supply per chassis. The FAS2554 can

    run indefinitely with two failed power supplies per chassis. Fans must be operational and Data ONTAP

    initiates the shutdown.

    How long does a FAS2550 run if a power supply or fan FRU is removed?

     Answer: The FAS2550 initiates a shutdown if a fan FRU is removed for more than two minutes. The

    FAS2500 also initiates a shutdown if a power supply is removed for more than two minutes.

    Can DC power still be ordered with FAS2500?

     Answer: No, as of April 2012, DC power can no longer be ordered for any NetApp controller or shelf. Formore information, review the EOA DC Power Product Bulletin.
