Julie Paterson – CEO
The countdown till Christmas is on, and
a much needed break for many of us.
I would like to thank all those who
attended our very first Netball Northern
Centre Forum on Saturday the 2nd of
Nov. We had a great turnout, and across
the board representation from the
centres.
Judging from the feedback we have had,
you found the forum to be informative
and a great way to further open up
communication within the zone.
All the slides from the forum
presentations can be found on the
Netball Northern Website if you need to
refer back to them, or please feel free to
contact Tash if you require any of the
resources talked about during the
forum..
We are excited at the recent launch of
both our 2014 Northern Mystics
Membership options, which are selling
well, and the 2014 Corporate Hospitality
Packages which are also on sale at the
moment.
Kind Regards
Julie Paterson

worthwhile weekend for all involved.

teachers in primary schools . This has
been met with fantastic feedback and is
now concluding with an interschool

Junior Pilot SchemeWe would like to thank Waitakere Netball
Centre for taking on a 6 week Junior Pilot
Scheme for year 1 and 2, and year 3 and 4.
Great work Moana Brown, Jess Coltman
and Natalie Pati for all your hard work to
make this pilot such a success.
Anne Nicholson has been observing the
weekly sessions and seeing the skills being
absorbed by the players and put into
action during the modified games. The
reinforcement of skills from one week to
the next is a credit to the game leaders.
Their support of the players through the
games and voicing positive feedback via
key words has been outstanding.
Practising skills, lots of catching and
passing and shooting in the Junior Pilot
games is receiving positive comments
from the majority of the parents on the
side line and the smiles from the children
showing total enjoyment.

Centre Rep Coach SelectionsThis month I have been part of the ANC rep coach interviews. This was a really
positive experience getting to know the coaches and getting a better understanding
of the coaches in ANC wanting to coach at the various rep levels.
Under 23 ProgrammeWe have named the U23 squad of 24 players, a very exciting mix of athletes. The
selection panel comprised of Kiri Wills- Head Coach, Paula Smith- Assistant Coach,
Judy Weston- HP Manager NNH & NNZ Emerging Talent Selector, TeAroha Keenan-
MAGS Coach, Robin Manihera- Counties Manukau LF Cluster Team Head Coach &
Hamish Barton- Netball Northern Zone, High Performance Manager.
The first Mental Skills workshop took place on November 28 at ANC. All of the Mental
Skills workshops will be facilitated by Daniel Stamp, who is a sports psychology
lecturer from Unitec and runs his own company called Ultimate Performance. Daniel
also works with a number of HP rugby academies and has been working closely with
Kylie Wilson who is also a sports psychologist who works with the Silver Ferns,
NZU21’s and NZSS and is fulltime with HPSNZ. The session focused on self-
awareness and reflective practice.
The first of 3 Fitness tests for the U23’s took place on Saturday, November 30 with the
players being put through their paces by the U23 Strength & Conditioning Trainer
Chloe McKenzie. The results from this first fitness test and the Body Movement
Screening will be used to compile the Individual Performance Plans for the athletes.
The U23 Management Team will be using an online Athlete Management Programme
called Total Coaching to manage each of the U23 athletes. Basically the programme
enables the management team to create training plans, monitor the athletes
performance including analysing their nutrition, sleep habits, goal setting etc, drag &
drop videos, generate reports, and communicate with the team or individual athletes.
The beauty of the Total Coaching Programme is that everything is stored in one area;
there is no paper trail or emailing of documents, printing difficulties, so basically no
excuses!
For more information regarding Total Coaching go to-
http://new.totalcoaching.com/sport/
Upper Northern Talent Development ProgrammeOne of the key focuses for the Northern Zone Performance Programme is to ensure
that athletes, coaches and umpires are exposed to equal opportunity in terms of their
development and also opportunities to be identified as potential talent for the future.
On Saturday November 23 and Sunday November 24, two days of Talent
Development took place in the far North. The first was held at Bay of Islands College
gymnasium in Kawakawa and the second was held at the ASB Leisure Centre in
Whangarei. There were 26 athletes, 8 coaches and 8 umpires involved in the first day
in Kawakawa and 36 athletes, 10 umpires and 11 coaches involved in the second day in
Whangarei.

Mystics First Training
U23 Mental Skills Session
Athletes were put through their paces with fitness testing, skill development sessions, basics of mental skills and game play at the end of the day.
For 99% of the 26 athletes and 8 umpires in Kawakawa they were taking part in their first ever Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test, which was fantastic
because it meant we were straight away exposing these athletes to something new.
The 2 best Yo-Yo scores from both days were from Grace Morrison from Kerikeri NC who made level 17 and Olivia Lobb from Whangarei NC making
17.1 in Whangarei. Robin Manihera- Coachforce Manager for NNZ was working with the coaches during the day discussing various aspects of the
day. The coaches were given a coach workbooks that they were required to work through during the day while observing and making notes.
Jan Skilton- Northern Zone Umpire Development Officer worked with the umpires developing their fundamental umpire skills and working on
aspects that will make them more effective on court e.g. positioning and vision.
Skill development session were facilitated by-
Lead Coach- Kiri Wills- Passing- variety /options /passing into space & shooting
Lead Coach- Trish Wilcox- Footwork – turning fully , pivoting & defence
Lead Coach- Tania Heap- Attack – method(s) of getting free & mid-court
All in all both days were a huge success and a lot of thanks needs to go to the Centres in the far North for helping with the organisation of both days
and for organising the people from their centres to attend the day, in particular Dot Dromgool from Kerikeri NC, Dallas Williams from Bay of Islands
NC, and Jean Hansen from Whangarei NC and everyone else who helped out from all the centres during the what was a successful weekend.
Also a big thanks to the Netball Northern Zone personnel, Trish Wilcox, Tania Heap, Jan Skilton, Anne Nicholson, and Kiri Wills U23 Head Coach and
NNZ Coachforce Manager – Robin Manihera for the work you put into making these two days such a success!
