automatically and seamlessly perform the tasks of the failed router. VRRPe extends the capabilities of VRRP by providing network managers the convenience of a virtual interface to aid in traditional IP troubleshooting tools to ensure that a default router is actually up and operational.

Industry Leading Layer 2 Features Today’s routers are also being deployed at the edge of the network as well as farther into the Metro network reaching closer to the Enterprise to offer alternative private line services using the advantages of 10GbE. The NetIron 40G offers extensive features directly aimed at Layer 2 Metro service providers.

• Metro Ring Protocol (MRP) — Offers an alternative to Spanning Tree based designs and provides sub-second fault detection and a fail-over specifically for Metro Ethernet ring topologies. MRP works in conjunction with VSRP and 802.3ad based link aggregation to provide bandwidth scalability and SONET-like resiliency in Metro Ethernet networks.

• Virtual Switch Redundancy Protocol (VSRP) — Offers an alternative to Spanning Tree based designs and provides sub-second fault detection and fail over protocol for mesh topologies. VSRP works in conjunction with MRP to provide SONET like resiliency required for critical Data Center and Metro Ethernet networks and protects against link or switch failures.

• Foundry's next generation STP innovations — Foundry’s innovative features such as SuperSpan, Rapid STP (802.1w) and Per VLAN Group STP (PVGST) based on 802.1s, dramatically improve the availability and scalability of Spanning Tree based networks.

o Single-instance STP — Provides a single instance of STP to run on all the port-based VLANs within a single device, enabling NetIron systems to support third-party devices that run a single STP instance in accordance with the 802.1q specification.

o Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol based on IEEE 802.1w — Dramatically improves the spanning tree convergence time to sub-second by automatically renegotiating port roles in case of a link failure without relying on timers.

o Per VLAN Spanning Tree (PVST) — Allows Metro service providers control over STP on an individual VLAN basis to provide traffic engineering.

o Per VLAN Group Spanning Tree (PVGST) — Allows Metro service providers dramatic improvements in STP and VLAN scalability by servicing up to 4,096 VLANs with 2 to 16 STP or Rapid STP instances. PVGST also provides VLAN load balancing for all 4,096 VLANs for efficient utilization of all fiber in a Metro network.

o Topology Groups – Goes beyond PVGST to scale all supported Layer 2 control protocols including STP, RSTP, MRP and VSRP while providing to ability to isolate the provider from any subscriber-influenced changes.

o SuperSpanTM — A unique innovation from Foundry that allows Metro service providers to build very large Layer 2 Metro Ethernet networks while simplifying manageability and network operations. SuperSpan gives Metro service providers the ability to tunnel BPDUs, and organize the network into smaller, faster converging, easy-to-manage standards-based STP domains using, while being isolated from STP changes caused by subscriber network settings.

• Super Aggregated VLANs (SAVs) — Allows service providers to decouple the provider VLAN domains from customer VLAN domains. SAVs extend the number of 802.1q based VLANs beyond 4096 by aggregating traffic from multiple VLANs for a single customer into a single provider VLAN. This allows service providers to carry traffic for up to 16 million VLANs

Advanced 10GbE Routing for Service Providers

The NetIron 40G offers an array of robust and proven routing protocol implementations designed to scale with the needs of today’s service providers. Multi-Service Operators (MSOs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Metro Service Providers (MSPs) building IP-based backbones require super-fast route learning and scalability to keep up with the ongoing demand for high-speed broadband services to the home, such as high-definition video on-demand. Feature-rich BGP4 implementation that scales to hundreds of peers and millions of routes, along with OSPF and IS-IS are essential for large-scale service provider deployments. The NetIron 40G leverages its distributed routing architecture to provide a highly scalable and robust 10GbE routing platform. With the capacity to accommodate twice the size of the current Internet routing table in hardware (at each of its packet processing engines), the NetIron 40G offers ample room for future growth without any sacrifice in performance. The Foundry Direct Routing architecture offers increased platform stability and faster recommencement of traffic forwarding at wire speed in case of failure.

Also, with its super-fast packet and route processors, the NetIron 40G delivers 480Mpps of throughput, while maintaining 1 million IP routes in its forwarding table. This level of performance illustrates the architectural strengths that are a hallmark in all of Foundry’s products.

As a next generation 10 GbE router, the NetIron 40G offers service providers enhanced control and flexibility with respect to service provisioning. Advanced Bandwidth Management (ABM) offers highly granular control over the bandwidth offered to end subscribers using many traffic classification options. Hitless Management Failover* (HMF) enhances the overall service availability, and allows carriers to more easily meet stringent SLA requirements.

The NetIron 40G is the industry’s highest-density 10GbE router. Unprecedented 10 Gigabit Ethernet port density of up to 32 10GbE ports in a single system and up to 96 10GbE ports within a standard 7-foot telco rack allow service providers to maximize the utilization of expensive floor space by consolidating systems into fewer units. With Foundry’s standards-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules, service providers can immediately scale the backbone and offer 10 Gigabit uplinks for Gigabit aggregation switches and routers at the edge, while keeping operational expenditures (OpEx) under control. The 4-port 10GbE interface modules come with hot-swappable XENPAK optics, offering both maximum flexibility and serviceability. The 1550nm ER optic allows high-performance connectivity between Internet data centers in different parts of a city up to 40 kilometers apart. 10 Gigabit Ethernet port density, superior serviceability, high availability, security and advanced Layer 2/3 feature sets, along with Foundry’s sFlow (based on * Layer-3 HMF will be included in a future release.

RFC 3176) to provide wire-speed traffic accounting for accurate end-user billing, make the NetIron 40G the product of choice for advanced 10GbE metro routing and service provider applications.

Scalable Layer 2 Metro Solutions Foundry’s NetIron 40G complements the existing NetIron product family for Layer 2 metro solutions, allowing service providers to build simple, cost-effective and very scalable Layer 2 networks. Metro service providers are being challenged with delivery of high-speed services at various levels. Metro service providers are increasingly turning to 10GbE as a transport technology of choice for building metro backbones. By taking advantage of the qualities of optical Ethernet such as its low cost, near-ubiquitous coverage and large pool of trained professionals, Metro service providers are building Layer 2 Metros for delivering Transparent LAN Services (TLS) for point-to-point and multipoint-to-multipoint connectivity. Foundry’s Terathon IronWare operating system powers NetIron 40G routers to provide a range of Layer 2 features specifically aimed at Layer 2 Metro networks. IronWare includes Metro Ring Protocol (MRP) for sub-second fail over and recovery in ring topologies, VSRP for sub-second fail over in mesh topologies, SuperSpanTM, Rapid STP based on 802.1w, Topology Groups, and Super VLAN aggregation for STP and VLAN scalability. Large MAC tables and ultra-low latency of under 10us offer unprecedented Layer 2 Metro Ethernet network scalability and wire-speed performance. High-speed technology, such as 10 GbE requires innovative approaches for proper monitoring and accounting of network usage. Foundry offers sFlow (based on RFC 3176), to accurately monitor the network activity at 10Gbps speeds, giving the MSP the ability to know how and who is using the network. This built-in intelligence lets the service provider accurately bill for used services, while pacing their investment in harmony with subscriber growth.

10GbE Peering Services for Internet Exchange Points The NetIron 40G allows cost-effective 10GbE bandwidth for Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), promoting large-scale, non-blocking Gigabit Ethernet and direct 10GbE peering arrangements between major Internet Service Providers. The increase in high-speed broadband services to both businesses and residential markets has increased the level of traffic handled by both first and second tier Internet service providers. IXPs are effective because they allow seamless peering between ISPs. The NetIron 40G offers wire-speed, non-blocking, low latency connections with unprecedented 10 Gigabit Ethernet port density of up to 32 10GbE ports in a single system and up to 96 10GbE ports within a standard 7-foot telco rack to create an extensive switching fabric for Internet traffic. The IronWare operating system provides important features, such as Rapid Spanning Tree (802.1w), MRP, VSRP, and Layer 2 control protection, using SuperSpan to build a resilient IXP network. Additional features such as wire-speed access control lists (ACLs) and intelligent MAC address security at the interface level, ensure that the IXP can prevent unauthorized use and minimize network outages created by improper use. Cross-module trunking using 802.3ad link aggregation scales the bandwidth between any two NetIron 40Gs up to 80Gbps with added protection against link or module failures, allowing seamless expansion of the IXP. Advanced network management using out-of-band network connections and distributed processing gives the IXP full control of the network regardless of user traffic activity. Foundry’s implementation of sFlow in hardware makes accurate monitoring of the network activity at 10Gbps speeds possible. The Terathon ASIC technology, combined with the industry-proven IronWare OS, makes the NetIron 40G an effective platform for meeting the demanding needs of Internet exchanges.
