Introduction - Netquiz 4

IntroductionThis User's Guide was designed for a person wishing to build exercises orformative tests on the Internet.

Netquizbuilds exercises or tests using software that runs on a stand-alonecomputer. It produces a file or directory which must be uploaded onto anInternet server. (It is also possible to run a quiz on an intranet, or locally on astand-alone computer; however, an Internet browser must always be used.)

1.1 Basic System Requirements

To Create a QuizThis software application can be used with a Power Maintosh or an IBMcomputer or compatible that has 32 MB of RAM. The computer must beequipped with a CD-ROM drive and a color monitor which can acceptthousands of colors and a resolution of 800 x 600. QuickTime 4.0 must beinstalled.

To Run the QuizTo access a quiz, you must use a computer that can run an Internet browser. Therecommended browsers are Netscape 4.6, Explorer 4.5 (Macintosh) and Explorer5.0 (PC).

The quiz user must have already installed the appropriate plug-ins to run themultimedia elements in the browser (Netscape or Explorer). QuickTime 4.0 isrecommend.

1.2 CD-ROM ContentsThe CD-ROM comes with Macintosh and Windows software versions as well asan example of a quiz. You will also find the ACROBAT READERTM softwareapplication on the CD-ROM, ready to be installed on your hard disk; thissoftware enables you to read or print the User's Guide for the Netquizsoftwareapplication.

You can run Netquizdirectly from the CD-ROM or copy it onto your hard disk.To install it on your hard disk, just copy the Netquiz folder or directory onto thisdisk.

Introduction - Netquiz 5

1.3 Running the SoftwareNetquiz permits the construction of exercises or formative tests on the Internetwithout programming or prior knowledge of HTML language. The softwareapplication offers several functions. Indeed, it is possible to use five differenttypes of questions: Matching, Multiple-choice, Fill-in-the-blank, List Orderingand True or False. You can also insert images, audio files and video sequences.A quiz can contain up to 100 questions.

To understand the logic underlying Netquiz, you just need to remember thatNetquizis an authoring tool for the Internet. It generates all the quiz componentsin a folder or directory that you then upload to a server.

Quiz ConstructionTo understand how the software works, here is an example of how you would goabout creating a test on Haendel's Messiahusing Netquiz. This test comes withthe software application on the CD-ROM.

N.B.: If you install Netquizon a hard disk, make sure that you keep theconfiguration of the directory intact.

2.1 Questionnaire FileOnce Netquizis open, a dialog box asks you to choose between Open anexisting test and Create a new test.

If you choose to create a new test, a dialog box will permit you to save the fileunder a new name. The default name is: untitled.

N.B. Do not choose the name of a file which already exists because this file willbe erased.

If you choose to open an existing test, a dialog box will allow you to choose thefile to be opened. An existing file has the .txt extension, (newquiz.txt in ourexample).

N.B. Although you are able to open the .txt files with most text editors, you arestrongly advised against editing questionnaires generated by Netquizto avoidinvalidating them.

It is possible that your Internet server imposes certain restrictions; for example, that it doesn't accept capital letters or accents in file and directory names. Inother words, you must make sure that you give a valid name to your project.

The reason why you must create a new project right from the start is becauseyou must create a subdirectory for the images, audio files and videos that will bepart of your questionnaire.

Once you have finished choosing the file, the .txt file (newquiz.txt in ourexample) for the questionnaire and the directory for the HTML pages and theircontents will be displayed side by side.

Let's look at the Newquiz directory. It contains the HTML pages for thequestionnaire as well as the two subdirectories: Misc. and Media.

The Misc. subdirectory contains the images that are intrinsic to thequestionnaire; it is generated from the ImagesNQ directory.

Initially empty, the Media subdirectory will contain the images, audio files andvideos that you choose to include in your questionnaire.

The abc.html file is the title page for the questionnaire.

Click this file twice when you want to open the quiz.

All these files, automatically created by the software application, together makeup the quiz. At the start, there will only be a single question contained in thequest01.htm file. Files entitled quest02.htm, quest03.htm, etc. will be addedaccording to the number of questions that you compose.

2.5 Placing the Questionnaire On-lineSave your completed questionnaire in HTML. Select Save in HTML in the Filemenu. This command also saves your source file.txt.

To place the questionnaire on line, you just have to place your project folder onan Internet server, create a link (URL) to the start page abc.htm, and that’s it!

Reminder: If you removed a link to a media file, the file still remains in themedia folder of the current project. Be sure to remove all obsolete files beforeany transfer to a server.

Also, if you deleted a certain number of questions from an existingquestionnaire, some HTML pages in the folder of the current project may beobsolete. It is recommended to delete those pages.

Example: You had 15 questions in the original version, and there are 12 left inthe final version. Pages quest13.htm, quest14.htm and quest15.htm are thenuseless. Netquiz never deletes automatically any file.

HTML pages saved with Netquiz have been designed to be used withQuickTime 4, Netscape 4.6 and Explorer 5.0.

In the Appendix, you will find an example of the screen pages for the quiz onHaendel's Messiah.

N.B. In order to run the quiz using Netscape or Explorer, you must make surethat the appropriate plug-ins have been installed in order to access themultimedia elements (audio and video).
