real people . real life . real God

Once upon a time there were cell phones and computers. You might call someone on your cell phone or e-mail them on your computer, but you couldn’t do both. Then someone got the bright idea that the cell phone and the computer could be put together into one device and voila! The Smart Phone! The first one came out in 1993, but it wasn’t till 2004 when RIM released the real Game Changer, the Blackberry 6210. Since then, the entire business has been transformed!

Churches need game-changing moments as well. One of those is happening this fall as we welcome new Executive Pastor John Ratz. John begins his ministry here on Labor Day weekend and he will prove to be a catalyst for refreshed focus and implementation. You can learn about John and Joanna in “Coffee’s On.”

A few other changes in our dynamic as a church are featured in this issue of Network. This summer we began an experiment with Living Bridge Chinese Church, looking for a way to include them as part of Calvary in much the same way our Hispanic Ministry has joined us. Read about it in “Bridge to China.”

As well, Lindsay Kivell gives us a preview of the new worship choir she is working on, a ministry that kicks off this fall.

Maybe you need a Game Changer in your life. Find it in a fresh ministry commitment, in a small group, or in a renewed engagement to “Read… Pray… and Do Justice.”

Bridge to China“I’ve dreamed and prayed for years about how Calvary could be a more multi-ethnic church,” says David Courey. The colouring of Calvary has been a slow process, but one the pastor takes a great deal of pride in.

“The emergence of our Hispanic ministry was an exciting confluence of events,” Courey says as he recounts his early conversations with Pastor Hugo and Celia Gomez. But perhaps even more surprising was a developing relationship with a new church in Cambridge, Living Bridge Chinese Church.

“These folks were looking for a place to hold their Easter service, and we were glad to open our door

to them,” Courey recalls. As a result of a series of conversations, Living Bridge, under husband and wife team Dr. Julia Lin and Dr. George Chu, is entering an experimental relationship with Calvary. Can we both benefit from working together?

Calvary’s hope is to nurture a warmth and openness to the Chinese community, while providing opportunities for the Chinese ministry to grow and develop within the framework of a larger church.

The provisional relationship will be evaluated in November, and if both parties agree, will be formalized in the new year.

He is a coffee fanatic. He roasts his own beans, and brews them through his own Starbucks espresso machine, a Christmas gift from his wife Joanna. It’s a meticulous job, “It’s got to be done just right,” he says. John Ratz is a detail man. An implementer. A doer.

Starting this fall, John will be Calvary’s new Executive Pastor. It’s a role he’s filled before at Philadelphia’s Christian Life Center. Before that John was a small groups pastor both there and in his father’s church, Brightmoor Christian Church, in Detroit. John self-describes as “a relational leader who wants to see people became all they can be in God.”

John has been married to Joanna, director of a church-based pre-school for 23 years. They have three children. The eldest, Cherise, was just married this August to James Martinez. Her sister Charissa joins them this September in Minneapolis, where all three are students at North Central University. Craig, the youngest will be entering Grade 10, and is the only American in the

family. John and Joanna are originally Canadians and started their ministry here, before following his Dad to the States.

“We’re excited to return to the Great White North and relearning how to spell the Queen’s English,” John quipped. It was clear from their trip to Cambridge that there are certain Canadian commonplaces the Ratzs’ miss…Swiss Chalet, for one.

Besides church stuff and his passion for coffee, John is an avid golfer. “It’s a sport that provides both relaxation and frustration simultaneously.” John is also a devoted techie. He loves being on top of every new gizmo and figuring out how to implement new apps into the flow of life and ministry.

Contemplating their ministry at Calvary, John reflected, “Calvary has an incredible past, and an even more exciting future. I’m excited about the potential of what God has in store.” David Courey, Calvary’s Lead Pastor

agrees. “I’m eager to start dreaming with John. His gifts seem to complement mine and I think we’ll make a great team.”

John will oversee the general ministry of Calvary, and help to facilitate the small group dimension. Wherever John has gone he has been a catalyst of small group formation. He sees leadership development as a key to church growth. David anticipates that John and Joanna’s genuine care for people and their authenticity as Christ-followers will be an asset. “The skills and spirit that John and Joanna bring will be invaluable to embodying our vision of being a church of real people, who experience real life with a real God.”

If John can bring that careful blend of sensitivity and technique he uses in coffee-making to the ministry of Calvary, we’re all in for a special treat!

Ahhh the fall is here. Time for putting the sunscreen away. Folding up the lawn chairs and sprinklers. Time to bring out the school supplies and all that goes with it. One thing I remember about the fall growing up was the chance to go back to school early for training camp for football or basketball. Sadly I never made it but I’m not bitter, I would just imagine myself playing. J

But each late August a bunch of students would go back early to get back into the team. They would train, practice plays, and get uniforms together. When the rest of us got to school, they would be wearing their uniforms and laughing together and already sharing memories. It was always a great thing to be a part of a team. So I joined a team, the audio/video club.

When Jesus left, he didn’t leave us alone and with nothing to do. He gave us the Holy Spirit so that we can go and do greater things in his name. And that is summed up with His last command, “Go and make disciples”. That was for all of us. His followers, his body, each of us doing our part and to make Jesus known. We are to do this together, as a team.

The difference between training camp for sports and God’s work is that Jesus has won the ultimate victory already. Sin and death have been defeated and Jesus offers eternal life. As we are trained, prepared and trusting our Father, we can see others believe and receive new life. Joining the team.

Some of us will throw the ball and some of us catch it. Some are teachers and some are preachers. Some change babies and some greet guests. Some are up front and some serve behind the scenes. Each of us doing what our Head coach asks of us will change our community.

We are a part of His team and we believe that we need to come together to spend time learning, growing and connecting with one another. On September 14th, you are invited to come and be a part of a one night training time. As we serve in different areas at Calvary, let’s take this night to come together as a team and build some team love. Let God guide us to become Game Changers in our church, community and the world.

Need…what need?

Cambridge…great city! There are lots of great neighborhoods with nice parks and excellent schools. The Cambridge Centre is a happening place…not every city has an ice rink in its mall! Cambridge seems to be a thriving community for the most part. But what would you think if someone told you there is a real serious need…the need for food? What if someone told you families are starving and kids are going to school on empty stomachs?

Facts:

• Over 1600 families and 32 community organizations use the Cambridge Self Help Food bank EVERY month.

• Emergency food hamper use is UP 39% since 2005.

• The need for serving dinners at Bridges Shelter has INCREASED 33% since 2006.

• Last year Bridges Shelter served nearly 28,000 individual dinners and nearly 18,000 individual breakfasts.

• There are 40 schools in Cambridge which run 50 meal programs (breakfast, healthy basket, snack or lunch).

Need…great need!!! That’s why we are asking you to participate in our FEED the NEED campaign this fall. Calvary is a big church with amazing potential…potential to help address this serious need in our community. We are partnering with

the Cambridge Food bank to participate in a church-wide collection drive. From September 16 – October 7, we are asking everyone at Calvary to get involved by bringing in as many non-perishable food items over this 4 week span. Our goal is to collect 2,500lbs of food by Thanksgiving Sunday so we can be a part of addressing a serious need in our own backyard!

Come on Calvary, let’s FEED the NEED together beginning September 16.

Worship

by Graham & Lindsay Kivell

When you hear the word choir, what do you think of? Often we think a detached group of people in robes, sitting in a loft, singing only classical pieces, and even…dare I say it, boring??? J

Some may think that having a choir in today’s culture is irrelevant, and outdated; however, we are about to prove them wrong!

Choir is God’s idea, not man’s idea. In 2 Chronicles Chapter 20 we see that King Jehoshaphat is leading the nation of Judea on a march across the wilderness. In the temple the night before, as they were praying and fasting, a choir singer had a prophecy in response to a question by the King, “what should we do”. The Lord answered through this choir singer saying, “Don’t worry – the battle is not yours, but mine!”

The next day, the choir was at the front lines going out even before the army. The choir led the nation into battle, and God chose to act when they sang his praise.

I believe we are called to do that as musicians. We have the privilege to help lead this generation into a deeper walk with God through music.

We are excited to be launching Calvary’s Worship Choir this fall and would love to have you join!

Some questions you may have about the Worship Choir:

When do we rehearse?

• Volunteer Kick Off Night Friday September 14 at 6:30 p.m.

• Our first practice will be Wednesday, September 26 from 7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m., and each Wednesday following.

What can you expect when you are in the choir?

• Community – our rehearsal time together will be fun, worshipful and a place to meet “like” hearted friends.

• Growth – you will see yourself grow each week not only musically but spiritually

Do you have to be able to read music to be in the choir?

• No! You have to be able to hold a tune, and we will teach you the rest.

Do you need to know if you are a soprano, alto, bass or tenor?

• No! If you don’t know what your range is, that’s okay! We will figure it out together.

When will we be singing?

• We will be joining the Sunday Worship Team once a month as well as singing for occasional special events.

What type of music will we be singing?

• A variety of songs, styles, and rhythms! Get ready to have fun and expand your repertoire!

Who will be leading the choir?

• Lindsay Kivell (Pastor Graham’s wife) has volunteered to lead the worship choir along side Graham

Will we be singing to a CD or live band?

• Live Band! Graham will be working with a live worship band that will be joining the choir

How do I join and what is required?

• We are looking for someone that loves to worship first, and sings second! If you have a heart for worship, then this is for you.

• A positive attitude and williness to learn and try new things

• Enthusiastic, and knows how to smile J

• Email Lindsay at [email protected]

We are looking forward to worshipping in this way with Calvary!

“What a beautiful thing, God, to give thanks, to sing an anthem to you, the High God! To announce your love each daybreak, sing your faithful presence all through the night.” Psalm 92:1

Ladies Bible Study Starting Monday, Sept. 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Prayer Room. God searches for a heart fully His: Neither Solomon, his son Rehoboam, or his son Abijam followed God fully. Nor did Jeroboam in Israel. Their hearts were divided. Would God ever find anyone to serve Him like David? Would he ever find one whose heart was fully his? God says we are to love Him with all of our heart. Is that really possible? This course has the answer. Secret Sister Join us for dessert and tea on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. This meeting will also be an opportunity to fill out the Secret Sister form and pick a new Secret Sister. This ladies get together allows women to secretly pick out a name of someone else at the meeting and throughout the year buy gifts for them on special occasions, send a card saying they are praying for them, or do something special for them. As a Secret Sister instead of writing down your own name you would sign it from your Secret Sister. GameChanger: What it Takes to Win

Fall is here. Ministries are starting. Are we asking you to get a job and do your chores, or are we asking you to change the world for somebody… maybe even the whole church? Will this year be the same-old same-old? Or can it be different? What will it take to change your game… and for you to be a gamechanger?

• Sept 2 coach: A New Name for the Game

• Sept 9 teammate: Wind Beneath

• Sept 16 hero(?): Ten Hands

Day by day, block by block, we are all building a life. Every action, every thought is erecting a destiny. So… how’s construction? The Bible says some build with wood, hay, and stubble, but in this six week series we check into the basic materials that form a sturdy infrastructure for the Christian life.

• Sept. 23 Knowing God: The Basics

• Sept 30 And Now for Something Completely Different: The Uniqueness of Christ and His Cross

• And through October....
