real people . real life . real God

My friend Boyce has been taking his beagle Guinness to obedience school since he was five months old. It’s pretty remarkable what he’s learned to do in seven months. Guinness can actually stay in one place on command for an extended period of time, even when people come to the door (I’ve often wonder what happens if the masters forget them there!). He can sit and stare into Boyce’s eyes as long as necessary, even when a snack is dangled around his face. Guinness can, in one leap, jump into the cab of a truck.

In spite of all that, I learned the other week that Guinness will be taking Grade 3 over again. I’m not saying he failed. It’s just that he’s young for his grade, and beagles (like boys) apparently don’t mature as fast as others.

Good grief! Sounds like humans, doesn’t it? Turns out beagles can be more patient than you or I! And even they have to learn a few lessons over again.

This month’s Network reminds us that we are still in God’s Obedience School. It’s called Life. It’s chock full

of great adventures (Read “Say the Word” about the Justice League of Calvary); great challenges (Check out “Could You Spare 1.86 Minutes?”); and great motivation (about our Owner’s Manual, the Bible, “Best Seller. Least Read”).

Two last things. Remember: Jesus, himself had to learn obedience (Heb. 5:8). And, don’t worry, we’re all still learning.

Are you looking for a fun, faith-based place to send your kids this summer?

Calvary’s STOMP Day Camp is an eight-week program that runs Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the months of July and August. Cost per child is $110 per week, with extra hours available for an additional fee.

Each week, the children participate in onsite activities, such as baking, games, team skits and cheers.

“These activities provide opportunities for the children to build relationships, as well as compete in team activities to earn points to be the winning team at the end of the week. And yes, there are prizes to be won,” says Megan Schmidt, director of STOMP Day Camp.

Twice a week, day trips are organized at various tri-city area venues. In the past, day trips have included Earl Haig Park, Bingemans, African Lion Safari, Westfield Heritage Village, ice skating, and many more.

Chapel time is held three times a week. The children participate in worship, listen to a creative Bible story and spend time in a small group where they are able to apply the lesson learned.

“We believe, as STOMP staff, that this is our most valuable time with the children. Most of the kids that attend our day camp are from the local communities and many of these families do not attend church,” says Schmidt, adding, “Our hope is to build relationships and minister to these families. We want to show them the love of the wonderful Lord we serve.”

Volunteers Needed

To run a successful day camp, STOMP has a staff of four leaders, one coordinator and one director. However, what really makes the program flourish are the Leaders In Training (LIT). These volunteers serve on a week-by-week basis, 40 hours each week. LIT’s go through a training process similar to staff and gain valuable experience over the summer. If you are interested in applying to be a leader or for one of the LIT positions (20 spots available), call the church office at 519.621.6310.

For more information, or to register your child for the summer, visit www.calvarycambridge.com/STOMP.

What’s the best-selling book of the last decade? Some might say decidedly one of the Harry Potter books. Others, one of the Chronicles of Narnia. A young woman will declare absolutely it must be the Twilight series. And now we have The Hunger Games.

Many people will know, however, that the perennial best seller at any time remains The Bible. John Sawyer, former vice president of Bible marketing at Zondervan, estimated that between 25-26 million Bibles are sold every year. About 90 per cent of households possess a Bible, and those that do tend to have over three in their home.

The Bible remains the best selling least read book in the world! Statistics on how many Christians have read the entire Bible are unclear. They run somewhere between 10 and 25 per cent., though according to one reputable researcher, only eight per cent of Canadians read the Bible daily.

Why Our Bibles Gather Dust

It’s one of the toughest questions to answer. Why do we have such a hard time reading something that so many of us believe is essential to our spiritual health? While there are probably many reasons, here are a few possibilities.

• Been there, done that. I read that story before, why bother reading it again? But the benefit of Bible-reading is how it gives you fresh perspectives and nourishes your soul from integrating that already-read passage with other passages and your current life context!

• Leave it to the Pros. After all Max Lucado, or Joel Osteen or Rick Warren have already done all the work better than I could. Of course, that doesn’t take the place of your personal journey of discovering the value of Scripture for yourself.

• I Just Don’t ‘Get’ It... It’s so easy to get confused, and I can never remember all the names and dates and places, and I just don’t see how it matters!

• Dickens Syndrome. Like David Copperfield, I know I should read the Bible, but

does it really matter? As one blogger put it, “After all, it’s hard to prove whether reading the Bible does any measurable good - aren’t there plenty of nice, successful people who don’t read the Bible? And aren’t there plenty of jerks, racists, and annoying people who do?”

Tell Me Why

So why should we add the Bible as one more thing we ought to do? Calvary is committed to being a community engaged with the Word of God, and at the end of May, we will be embarking on a journey of exploration to answer two questions “why should I read the Bible” and “how can I best digest Scripture?”

It starts with a Saturday seminar on May 26 called The Bible Tells ME So. Dr. Jenn Shepherd is convinced we have an an individual style of reading and hearing God in the Bible. She’ll help us to discover our personal key to unlocking the treasures of Scripture.

Beginning Sunday, May 27, we will be following a three-week investigation called TXT: Download from Heaven. You’ll want to come each week as we ask some tough questions about how we can trust an ancient book that’s been through so many hands, or what do we do with some of the gaping discrepancies

of the Bible, and how do we find life-changing truth for ourselves?

As we roll into summer, maybe we can make a collective commitment to actually read, and react to the best-selling book in human history!

My wife and I came late in life to mortgage paying. We spent 10 years living in a parsonage. Big mistake! By the time we moved out of town the house we had thought of buying at $60,000 sold for $180,000. Instead we moved out of the parsonage and saw no growth in equity.

It turns out there’s a lot of good in paying a mortgage. But the best thing about it is paying it down. And the faster you do that the better it is. I know people who go on cruises and take vacations in exotic places because they paid down their mortgage. I’m told they have pretty nice RRSPs, too, but that’s none of my business (see next month’s gossip column for more on that!).

The same goes for the church. No, not exotic cruises for the pastor, but more money put to kingdom use, the faster and better we pay down our mortgage.

Last year we were able to collect $56,911.57 through a campaign called Day of Pay in May. The money we were able to save enabled us to pay two months of

extra mortgage and to take care of some ministry extras.

• The Hole in Our Gospel series

• Lite the Nite Halloween outreach

• A new roof on the worship centre at a cost of $40,536.21

All of these extra expenses and more were funded by your generosity. And Day of Pay money we raised for mortgage and principal payments meant General Fund dollars weren’t needed to support those needs, but went to real kingdom stuff.

So here we are again, hat in hand, asking you to once more carve out a day of pay in May.

I know, it seems like a lot to ask, but it isn’t really. We’re asking for one eight-hour stretch out of 2080 hours of pay in a year. That’s really only 0.385 per cent of your wages. We’re actually asking you to give, above your regular tithes and offering, 1.86 minutes a day of your work time. If you can work overtime that’s

1.24 minutes each working day this year.

Put it all together and we could easily pay what’s lacking in our mortgage payment scheme. This year the Board increased the General Fund draw from $15,000 a month to $18,500. Still, based on building fund giving so far this year, we will require an additional $48,750 to make our payments... anything beyond that we can put into additional mortgage payments.

As long as these payments are made we will have a healthy flow of General Funds for ministry. It all depends on you... and me. Your generosity allows ministry to happen. So as we roll into May, consider offering an extra Day of Pay for the mortgage.

420 minutes over 260 days!

Could You Spare 1.86 Minutes?

Justice League of Calvary

Say the Word!

Say the word ‘Justice’ and powerful images of fist banging, white wigs and large wooden gavels probably come to mind. Definitive and limiting adjectives like ‘right’ and ‘wrong,’ ‘guilty’ or ‘innocent,’ ‘death’ or ‘life’ ring in our heads. Synonyms for that word, however, spell out different images – ‘righteousness’, ’fairness,’ ‘reasonableness,’ and ‘integrity.’ Could it be then that Jesus’ love of compassion, mercy, and honesty could also be determined as ‘doing justice?’

We believe it! And as the Justice League, we are taking the task head on. With Micah 6:8 as our guiding verse, we are set to serve the church by communicating and administering a passion for justice in and outside our church walls. That means expressing the heart of Calvary Assembly by being involved in outreach that spreads the gospel of Jesus Christ and the love of God locally and globally.

The first task we’ve taken on is communication! We want to make sure you are well informed about what and who we (the church) is involved with by supplying you with the latest news, and also some amazing opportunities for you to share the talents God has given you.

That means the launch of a new webpage on the Calvary Assembly website – www.calvarycambridge.com/outreach. A place for you to read about and interact with the local and global ministries we’re a part of.

Watch for the ‘Justice League’ tab Sunday, May 13!

That means the launch of our own Justice League news. Subscribe to it on our new webpage after May 13, or watch for the first hard copy issue in June!

That means finding out what YOUR heart beats for. And so on Sunday, May 4 and for the next two Sundays you will have the opportunity to tell us where you already volunteer – where your passion is. Forms will be available in the sermon notes or in the atrium – fill one out and drop it in the offering plate.

We want to recognize and celebrate the justice you are doing right in our own community – the church extended.

We are working on establishing some friendship and awesome connections with local and global ministries to make sure you know where there is a need to fill – prayerfully, physically, and financially.

Watch this space for more news and events. And if you believe you have a talent you can bring to the Justice League team – we have a space for you! Talk with one of the pastors about your involvement.

Timothy Keller said that “Justice is care for the vulnerable.” The New Testament tells us to care for the orphans and widows (James 1:27), invite the weak to your banquets (Luke 14:13), help the weak and vulnerable (Acts 20:35). They are echoes of the same thought from the Old Testament, in Micah 6:8 when God said he expects us to ‘do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God’. This isn’t rocket science – it’s simple obedience as Christians to the Word of God.

Get involved! Read, pray, ask a question, lend some time and watch what God will do.

The Justice League of Calvary is Gord and Anita Cooledge, Jim Estok, Erik Vicujnic , Allison Andres, Donna McGaghey, Everett Hamilton, Jackie Gilmar, Janos Sera, Kaelie Gray, and Pastor Tim Hyjek, ... what about YOU?

...what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Funny Things Kids Say to their MothersA little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination, and looked at the old pages as he turned them. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. “Momma, look what I found,” the boy called out. “What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered, “I think it’s Adam’s suit!”

My son had attended his first Sunday School class earlier in the day. After his class, I filled up his inflatable swimming pool and let him wade in the water. Pretty soon, I caught him scooping out all of the water and dumping it out onto the grass. “What are your doing?” I questioned. “Mommy, this water is broken so I’m getting rid of it!” my son replied. I questioned him again “What do you mean its broken?” He replied “Jesus could walk on top of his water, I just sink in mine!”

Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother Joel were sitting together in church. Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had enough. “You’re not supposed to talk out loud in church.” Joel asked “Why? Who’s going to stop me?,” Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, “See those two men standing by the door? They’re hushers.”

One day my son Sebastian and I were walking back home from the store. The sun had just recently set and the moon was up. The moon was so huge and beautiful. It was perfectly in half and the color was as if it were an orange and lemon blended together. My son Sebastian said,“WOW mommy look at the moon, it is picture perfect,” and I said, “It sure is.” He said, “It looks like a lemon and orange mixed together then cut in half.” I said, “It sure does.” Then after a moment of silence, He said, “You know, that man sure must have a lot of food up there.” Trying hard not to laugh, I said, “Yeah?” and He said,“Yeah, cause I’ve seen him sometimes... and he’s full.”

In our town there is a graveyard where the main street runs right through the center. My two daughters were discussing the situation when my 11 year old said she didn’t understand why her grandmother would want to live right behind it. My 9 year old piped up,” That’s because when she goes, they won’t have far to take her.”

When my oldest son Dalton was two-years-old, he found his first box turtle. After playing with the poor thing for what seemed like hours, he began studying it very closely. After seeing him stare at it face to face for a long time, I couldn’t resist any more. I finally asked him what he was looking at. He said, “Mom, does he have a nightlight in his shell so he can see in there?” http://familyheart.net

May 27 Who Needs the Bible? There are a thousand voices vying for our attention, why add another to the din? Does the Bible have any claim to our attention? How do I read the Bible and actually make useful sense of it for daily living?
