WELCOME TO TRIALDIRECTOR 5 NETWORK

Welcome to TrialDirector 5.1 Network edition! We’ve worked to provide you with the most robust network-based version of TrialDirector yet. New to version 5.1 of TrialDirector is the Presentation Preview tool, which allows you to easily preview your exhibits and any corresponding annotations or treatments BEFORE showing them live in the Presentation Mode. In TrialDirector 5.1, you can also automatically create video clips from any issue codes applied to your transcripts. 5.1 is also fully compatible with the Windows Vista™ operating system.

From an administrative standpoint, we’ve made several changes as well! TrialDirector 5 Network server installations can now be performed from either an administrative workstation to the server, or directly on the server to itself, eliminating the need to keep that admin workstation intact to administer the TrialDirector Network installation. We’ve simplified the initial setup with a smarter application install path and case storage location wizard. We have introduced the Client Connection Viewer which allows administrators the ability to see who is using TrialDirector Network and what machine they’re logged in from; and lastly, we’ve introduced the Client Access License upgrade tool to help manage TrialDirector 5 Network Client Access Licenses (CALs) on your server.

We hope that you enjoy the newest version of inData TrialDirector 5 Network. We’ve worked hard to bring you the very best, with ease of use for both administrators and end-users built right in!

Thank you for your continued support!

NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE RECOMMENDATIONS

These Network Infrastructure Recommendations shown below will ensure that the inData TrialDirector Network software has a robust operating environment. Adhering to these recommendations will allow faster response times when accessing case databases and image information across the network.

100MB/1GB BaseT Local Area Network connections between server and client

Microsoft NetBIOS based network connectivity for UNC path resolution

MAN and WAN networks require fiber backbone connectivity between sites

VPN access via an internet connection is NOT recommended

Use of NetBIOS TCP/IP protocol supports both IPv4 and IPv6

Note: Multimedia Playback over Networks It is recommended that audio/video files (such as MPEG, AVI, WAV, etc.) be stored locally on client workstations. Supported Client Operating Systems

The inData TrialDirector 5 Network has been installed and tested on the following operating system plat-forms. If you do not see your operating system listed, it has not been tested and is therefore not supported.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (SP4)

Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2 required)

Microsoft Windows Vista

Client System Microsoft Windows Components Requirements

The following Windows Operating System components should be installed on each workstation. These com-ponents are necessary for optimal operation of the TrialDirector 5 Network software.

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 (or newer)

Microsoft DirectX 9.0c

The client installation does NOT redistribute/install these components. The client installation will simply check the current version and enter the results into the Install.log file generated in the C:\Program Files\in-Data\TrialDirector 5 Network folder. If you are not sure if your target workstation has the components listed above, check the Install.log file for the following entries:

*** CHECK FOR MDAC VERSION: 06/20/07 15:56;48 ***

***MDAC VERSION: 2.70 ***

*** CHECK FOR DIRECTX VERSION: 06/20/07 15:56:48 ***

***DIRECTX VERSION: 9.00 ***

In the example above, the target workstation has MDAC v2.70 and DirectX 9.0 installed. This meets the requirements listed above.

Updated versions of these components can be downloaded from the Microsoft website or via Windows Update.

6

INSTALLING THE TRIALDIRECTOR 5 NETWORK SERVER

The network install procedure consists of three main steps:

1. Mapping the Target Network Drive

2. Selecting the Case Data Network Drive

3. Installing the TrialDirector 5 Network application on the server

Selecting and Mapping the Application

Files Network Share

TrialDirector 5 Network must be installed to a Microsoft Windows network share that is accessible by all client workstations intended to access the TrialDirector server.

A new feature of TrialDirector 5.1 Network is the ability to install the server from either an administrative workstation or from the server itself. In either case, the target Microsoft Windows network share must be a mapped drive on the machine from which the software installation is being run. Perform the mapping operation before launching the TrialDirector Network Server installation. The network share drive mapping is temporary and only required for the installation of the server. For example, your target server and share will be: \\SERVER\APPS\ , the “APPS” share should be mapped to an available drive letter on the administrative workstation or server in order to perform the install. The specific drive letter is unimportant. The installer will automatically detect the first mapped drive letter on the system; clicking Browse will allow you to change the default path.

The target location where TrialDirector 5 Network will be installed must be at least one folder deeper than the root of the network share. The default installation will create an “inData\TrialDirector Network Server” folder where the “Application Files” and “Client Install” folders will be placed. This directory structure segregates the TrialDirector program files from the TrialDirector client installation files. Using the example above, the final UNC path for the TrialDirector 5 Network installation would be: \\SERVER\APPS\INDATA\TRIALDIRECTOR\ .

Selecting and Mapping the Case Data

Network Share

The TrialDirector 5 Network Case Data must be a network share location that is accessible by all client workstations intended to access TrialDirector case data. Case data can reside on the same server as the TrialDirector 5 Network application files, or a different server altogether. Cases created and accessed by TrialDirector 5 Network clients can also be accessed and modified by TrialDirector 4.0, 4.5, and 5.0 Network and Stand-alone clients. New installations will create new a “Cases” folder from which all clients will create and execute cases.. Upgrade installations and installations where case data already exists on a network share should be pointed to the case data location. (This is the location of the director.dat file, which resides in the root of the Cases folder.)

Just like selecting the location for the Application Files, the Case Data Microsoft Windows network share must be mapped as a drive on the machine where the software installation is being run prior to launching the TrialDirector Network Server installation. The network share drive mapping is temporary and only required during the installation of the server. For example, your target server and share will be: \\PDC2003\DATA\ , the “DATA” share should be mapped to an available drive letter on the administrative workstation or server in order to perform the install. The specific drive letter is unimportant. The installer will automatically detect the first mapped drive letter on the system, clicking Browse will allow you to change the default path.

ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS

Client Connection Viewer

The Client Connection Viewer utility is a new administrative tool in TrialDirector 5 Network. This utility will allow Server Administrators to determine who is using the TrialDirector 5 Network application at any given time, which makes it easy to poll users when you need to free up a license for another user.

The Client Connection Viewer is accessed from the Start Menu/TrialDirector 5 Network/

Client Connection Viewer menu item.

The Client Connection Viewer screen displays client connection information based on Microsoft Windows networking usernames and machine names. In the example above, five clients are currently connected to the TrialDirector Network Server. In the event that the client license limit has been reached, the server administrator would use the Client Connection Viewer utility to determine which users are attached to the TrialDirector Server in order to manage the connection count.

As its name implies, the Client Connection Viewer only views current connections, it does not manage them. When all Client Access License connections have been filled and another client attempts to connect, their access will be temporarily denied. The Administrator will need to contact the currently attached users and determine who can to disconnect from the server (by exiting TrialDirector Network) to allow a different client to connect.

The dialog at right is displayed if a TrialDirector 5.1 Network Client attempts to connect when all Client Access Licenses are in use. Clients are encouraged to contact the Administrator for assistance.

20

Page 25: NETWORK INSTALLATION GUIDE
