EYFS & PRIMARY DECEMBER 2016 Dear Parents As we come to the end of the first semester of this academic year we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the support you have given your child and Network teachers to enable your child to make good progress. Our triangular partnership of teamwork between parent, students and Network International School is the corner stone of every student’s future and success. We have had a very busy second term in the Early Years and Primary phases at Network School. In Foundation 1, students have looked at “people who help us” while Foundation 3 have been out on exciting field trips. In the Primary phase our sports programme goes from strength to strength with an excellent range of activities for our students to participate in. Years 5 and 6 have been on interesting field trips and Year 4 have been learning about Shan Culture. In January we will produce a short Newsletter to reflect on our recent Christmas Concerts and the Secondary Talent Show. At the end of the newsletter I have included information about our new school App and hope that you will download this to keep up to date with everything that is happening at Network International School. In addition all our letters to parents are now emailed out so please help us by ensuring your email address is up to date. We look forward to working with you in the second semester and we wish all students, parents and Network International staff a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with best wishes for 2017. EYFS & PRIMARY DECEMBER 2016

Dear Parents

As we come to the end of the first semester of this academic year we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the support you have given your child and Network teachers to enable your child to make good progress.

Foundation 1 Fire Fighters, Fishermen, Doctors and

Farmers In term 2 Foundation 1 student’s topics were based on “people who help us” Topics were rotated around the 4 classrooms where the children became brave firefighters, caring doctors, hardworking farmers and busy fishermen. During this time the children grew plants, looked after their friends who were “sick” and reflected this in their art work that they produced. We also started swimming in the school swimming pool which was a great success and very popular! Now the next step is our Christmas Concert which we are busy singing and having fun preparing for!

foundation 3

Foundation 3 classes Discoverers, Explorers and Inventors have had a very exciting term. All the classes went on a field trip to Sein Lan Soe Pyae Park and although it was raining when we set off it did stop shortly after we arrived. Everybody had a lovely time playing games and playing in the park.

This term’s theme is ‘Bears’ and the children have been very interested in finding out facts about bears and listening to bear stories. They have learned about the solar system, a bear rap, made porridge and had a teddy bears picnic.

Foundation 2 and 3 children started swimming this term. It is wonderful to see how confident the children are in the pool and how much they enjoy swimming.

We are now preparing for the Christmas concert, the children have learned the words of the songs and we are sure that they will provide a marvellous performance.

From all the staff in Foundation 3 we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you all in January for the start of the next semester.

The year 5 Field Trip

In the first term of school, the years 5s have been going on a fun field trip to the National Myanmar Museum. We went there to see what information the museum had to pass out to us and the main purpose was to see what Myanmar’s past was like. While we were walking, we had to answer our questions in pairs. We had somebody saying what they liked about it. Year 5 Geckos Charlie said, “I liked the Fossils of the teeth and how big the museum was.” We wonder where the next field trip is and when.

Network students at the sailing club

Tr. Alex, Tr. John and Tr. James have prepared a trip to the sailing club for most years. It was absolutely AMAZING! We collected some quotes from some selected people that were at that wonderful moment. Year 4 Anna requested “My favourite part was going on the speed boat.”

“My favourite part was going on the stand up paddle boards and watching people fall in the water.” Tr. Yas Geckos Teacher.

Both articles written by O’Pyi, Maeve, Emma and Amber in Year 5 Iguanas

Year 4

In PSHE, Year 4 have have been learning all about Shan culture. On Friday, November 25th we had a special Shan day! We prepared Shan tofu from a chickpea powder with Teacher Maeve and Teacher Ah Bu cooked it for us. Then, we chopped up tomatoes, garlic and onion (there were some tears from the onions!). Teacher Chaw Su and Teacher Sara cooked the tomato mix together and it smelled delicious! Finally, we mixed it altogether with some Shan noodles. While we were waiting for our feast, Teacher Kho Thet taught us a fun Shan game, Teacher Maeve read us a Shan folktale and Teacher Ah Bu taught us a Shan dance. At lunchtime, we gathered together to eat our tasty feast. We had a wonderful day!

Sports

What a great start to the year it’s been for Primary sports so far! Our Primary sports program has never been better here at Network thanks to the brand new sports field and swimming pool. Primary sports is also growing in Yangon, due to the Primary sport leagues we’ve been able to set up locally, to help push and maintain a high level of Primary physical activity which is really exciting!

Our students so far this year have thrown themselves into every sporting opportunity I’ve given them, always showing the highest level of sportsmanship in everything they do. From basketball to football tournaments, to handball and bench ball matches and not to forget our recent swimming gala competition! Our students here at Network, without a doubt, have definitely done the school proud.

One of the most exciting events to happen within our sports program to date, has got to be our recent trip to Yangon Sailing Club. Here a large number of our students took part in the beginner sailing course - ‘Discover Sailing Clinic’. During the course students got the chance to sit, stand and touch sailing boats that are used in local competitions, as well as trying out the SUP boards on the water (stand up paddle boards). After all of that we finished off the course with a speed boat ride all the way around Inya Lake to watch the sun set over the city. Since this trip, I’ve been asked a number of times by different students, if we can fit any sailing boats into our school swimming pool to practice on… Maybe one day!

We’ve got loads more events, tournaments and matches already lined up for after Christmas and I can’t wait to share in our student’s success.
