“How do you know you’re a servant?” Maureen Grant offered this riddle long ago when I was feeling overwhelmed by parenting and pastoring and, in a few situations I was facing, being taken advantage of.

I suppose the better question to ask is, “Who the heck wants to be a servant in the first place?” Did you know that often in the Bible the words ‘servant’ and ‘slave’ are interchangeable? Not for me this servant business... Neither paid, like a butler or parlor maid, nor unpaid, as in bound servitude!

But then you hear the words of Jesus, “The greatest among you will be your servant. (Matthew 23:11)” And “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all. (Mark 9:35)”

This month’s issue of Network is a celebration of servants. Calvary simply would not, indeed could not, function without servant-hearted people! Hundreds of you make this church the great place it is! We want to celebrate you at our Fiesta Appreciacion on Friday, June 8.

You can learn about true Servanthood in this issue in Paul Williams’ “Servant’s Heart.” We take a quick look at the state of servant hood at Calvary in “Volunteers keep Calvary’s ministry wheels spinning.” And we explore our role in serving the community and the world in “Under Construction” about the Justice League of Calvary.

Oh, and how do know you’re a servant? You won’t like the answer, I’m sure. But then, remember Jesus. You really know you’re a servant when people treat you like one.

Recently, I had the privilege of going to a conference in Altanta and while there experienced some famous southern hospitality.

The first stop was an IHOP to get some breakfast. Our waitress was warm, welcoming and it was all “How can I help,” “What can I do for you?” and “Is there anything else?” After we ordered our food, three servers came with our food all at once. It was an amazing experience to be waited on that much. Then to top it off, as we left there was a big “God bless you.” I’m now an IHOP fan. Such service.

There’s a story in Mark (10:35) that talks about this idea of serving. John and James have just taken Jesus aside after a couple of years of miracles and wonders and had one request. First, whom did they think they were to make requests of Jesus? But this is because Jesus has lived a life of serving them and John and James had confidence to approach Jesus with a request.

Back to the story. Jesus replied, “Okay... what can I do for you?” “World Peace?” “Heal a broken relative?”

“Provisions for a suffering family?” Nope. Slightly more fleshy.

“Well, we’ve heard you talk about your kingdom and that’s awesome... what we are thinking is that we would sit beside you... one on your right and one on your left.”

Jesus replied, “You don’t know what you are asking. These are places are for those who they are prepared for.”

Well, when the other disciples heard this they were

ticked. Probably ticked not because James and John had done something wrong but because they didn’t think of it first!

Teachable moment. Are you ready? Here it comes.

Jesus sat his disciples down. You know how this government structure works. You are told what to do. Respect is demanded. You are afraid to make mistakes. You have to suck up to those in authority to get favour. You act out of obligation and anxiety to please those above you. Ordering people around. Not so with you.

Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be servant to all. The son of man didn’t come to be served, but to serve. Revolutionary!

No more striving to be better than the next one. God’s kingdom is built on people serving others. In fact, if you really want to be great in God’s kingdom you need to serve the most! (Phil 2)

Let that settle in for a moment. Growth as a follower of Christ will be seen in how we serve others. This doesn’t mean that you need to be always busy doing all kinds

of things but it does mean that you are making use of what God has given you.

A simple guide is to ask each other, “How can I help you?”

I can cook. I can sing. I love to teach. I can build. I am mechanical. I have spare time. I have experience. I care about you. I love Jesus. How can I help?

Servant’s Heart… become a Jesus fan.

Some days, don’t we all feel like we are under construction?!

Too big. Too small. Too emotional. Too dumb. Too useless. But that’s not the picture God sees! Righteous, persistent, trying against all odds, made a breakthrough today, job-like, remembered me and warmed my heart, spent time reading my words, did for others whom I love… these are the thoughts that God is thinking about you today.

Whether in a privileged or a developing country – every nation and person is under construction until Jesus comes. And because we’re intimately responsible for the constructing of peace and justice in our world, take a moment and reflect on these international dates:

• June 5 – World environment Day Are you green? How are we treating the planet God put us on?

• June 20 – World Refuge Day Where are the refuges of war, politics and slavery in Cambridge and how can we help?

• June 26 – International Day in Support of Victims of Torture Isn’t supporting these victims, indeed ‘doing justice’?

Last month, we celebrated with Mike and Cathy Martin – our missionaries in Turkey – as they baptized several new believers in Jesus. We are also watching awesome growth in their church plant in a restricted access nation! The Martins are doing justice and bringing people to Christ! To learn more about the church in Turkey, visit calvarycambridge.com/justice or worshipinephesus.com for church news from Mike and Cathy.

This month, we celebrate the many volunteers who attend Calvary Assembly and do justice in our community. If you haven’t had a chance to let us celebrate you – please drop by the Atrium kiosk to fill out our green survey form! As of mid-May, more than 100 people responded and are serving at over 50 different organizations in our community! Wow! More details to follow – watch this space!

As part of doing justice in the community, this summer we’ll be participating in a Cambridge-wide event called Backpacks for Bookworms. Our church will be partnering with the Cambridge Food Bank to give away nearly 1,000 backpacks to underprivileged children for school in September. Watch this space and listen for adverts during church services for more news on what is needed. The big kick-off event happens here on June 26 with the media, Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig and you. Plan

ahead to help, attend, and make a child smile! Speak to one of the Justice League of Calvary members, or Pastor Tim to get connected.

And though still under construction, check out the launch of our Justice League webpage at calvarycambridge.com/justice. As we develop this site, it will become your place to go for international and local missions’ news where Calvary is focused and involved, upcoming events, missions’ trips, and ways to celebrate and reflect.

Micah 6:8 “He has shown you O man what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.”

Serve

By Tim Hyjek

I grew up in a family of eight – two parents, two broth-ers, and three sisters. In order to keep things running smoothly throughout the house, everyone had to pitch in and do something. This is what kept our home func-tioning, well, that and my mom!

Church is sort of like that. In order to make things hap-pen and keep the wheels of ministry spinning, each member of the church family has a part to play. Here’s the only difference: at home the things we had to do were considered chores. At Calvary, we don’t see serving as a chore, but rather a great opportunity to express your God-given talents and gifts to help the church cre-ate and execute its ministries with excellence.

In fact, Ephesians 2:10 declares “we are God’s handi-work, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” My parents told me “never let something good go to waste.”

We are good…God’s handiwork in fact! God did not have in mind to waste that “good” but to use His handi-work to advance His purposes on earth. Let me rephrase that – God desires to use you to make a difference through His local church. And there are many opportu-nities for you to choose from. To give you some perspec-tive it takes hundreds of volunteers to make all that we do at Calvary happen and more than 200 volunteers just to have an effective Sunday morning experience!

So, only two questions remain: As God’s handiwork, where will you commit to serving at Calvary?

And finally, what are you waiting for?
