A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I was greatly saddened at the news of Sheila Brierley passing away. She was a good friend and contributed lots to this magazine. She will be sorely missed. RIP Sheila. Well, another year gone! I can’t believe it. Is someone turning the handle faster on the world? However, a brand new year beginning so let’s look forward to it. Expect lots of Christmassy things in this edition. We have some wonderful jokey snippets from Margaret (I don’t put surnames down anymore as some people don’t want me too, but you know who you are). We have a Christmas quiz (it’s dead easy) and try the Christmas Calculator on Page 7; I tried it but had to stand on my head as the calculator I used was on my computer. So relax over the Christmas period (if you can that is) and enjoy your magazine and think the next issue will be the start of Spring. Peter Chadwick

A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS FROM YOUR MAGAZINE PRODUCTION TEAM

Simon Says

Another Advent has seemed to come around again. It seems to come increasingly quickly year by year. It only seems two minutes ago that we were celebrating the coming of the year 2017. Where has this year gone to? This year has flown by and we are approaching the season of Advent again, and continue hurtling on towards another Christmas.

As many of you will know I have a love for poetry, hymns, jokes and the poetic general. I often quote such sources during sermons; and so not wishing to pass up an opportunity to quote John Betjeman — here I go.

No love that in a family dwells, No carolling in frosty air,

Nor all the steeple-shaking bells, Can with this single truth compare,

That God was Man in Palestine, And lives today in Bread and Wine.

There is not room here to quote the full poem, but it compares the message of an all too secular Christmas with the timeless truth of Christ’s presence here with us on earth. It goes on about the:

Provincial public houses blaze And Corporation tramcars clang,

On lighted tenements I gaze Where paper decorations hang,

And bunting in the red Town Hall Says 'Merry Christmas to you all’.

The days of the year fly by, the months pass all too quickly and another year is nearly over, but the one constant truth that remains is that in Christ we have an ever-present Saviour. The word Advent is derived from a Latin root meaning “coming” or “arrival”, and the season was developed in the early Christian church as a preparation time for the nativity. However it is also a time to focus on the coming of Christ again at the end of time. As Advent comes this year we have the opportunity to stand aside from the headlong rush towards what John Betjeman called “those tissued fripperies” and focus on the truth on the solidarity of the love of God in the person of Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit. We should spend Advent looking forward with a glow of expectation; expectation of the coming of the Christ-child in Bethlehem and expectation of the Second Coming of our Lord. For it is in the expectation that the truth of Betjeman’s verse lies;

And is it true? And is it true, This most tremendous tale of all

Seen in a stained-glass window’s hue, A Baby in an ox’s stall?

The Maker of the stars and sea Become a Child on earth for me?

Take some time this Advent to reflect that the Christ-child became a child for us, and that in the power of His heavenly Father he will return again. There will be no “tissued fripperies” for us this Advent, just the love that God shares with his children. A promise greater than any gift we will give or receive this Christmas. Simon

Joseph Complains

Did Joseph book his trip

to Bethlehem via Thompsons? Dear Thompsons Direct, I acknowledge safe receipt of your epistle, in response to my epistle, reference the recent sojourn with my wife, Mary, in the city of David or, as your brochure puts it, Bethlehem. For a travel company of your repute, both Mary and I find your explanation of the accommodation arrangements far from satisfactory. If we have to make the journey again - which I hope we do not, in the light of what occurred once we were there - it will not be with ''Thompson 18 - 30 Holidays!'' I offer the following response to your explanations: 1. I have looked at your brochure again. I do not agree that the description of the Inn includes outhouses. The words ''travelers with cattle can expect the use of the stables'' surely refer to the cattle, not the guests. You may say that there are many worse off than ourselves - unfortunately, they all seem to have booked with your company! 2. You will have to take it from me that Mary giving birth to the Son of God was totally unexpected and as much a surprise to me as anybody. I can assure you that, had I known he was on the way, I would have given you the opportunity to bring in your best PR people. 3. I agree with your proposition that, from every point of view, the story has more appeal as it is, in a stable, than in a twin-bedded room, with en-suite and half-board, in the inn that we had booked. I also agree that it must have been more convenient for the angel to make his way across the yard and into the stable than through the residents' lounge. Of course, I accept the presence of the entire heavenly host, praising God along the corridor on the second floor, might have resulted in complaints by your other guests. But it does not address my main complaint. My wife, Mary, has little in common with shepherds. It was bad enough having to cope with livestock

in the stable, but, to have to face a deputation of local shepherds, who claimed they were tired of abiding in their fields at night, was not our idea of local colour. Your decision to include it, as an optional extra, in next year's brochure, does not impress us. 4. I know you are denying that you had anything to do with the couriers, who arrived from the East, bearing gifts, but I still maintain that I had seen one in your office, when I booked the trip. I do not wish to appear ungrateful, but, at a time when I was struggling with a newly born baby, an exhausted wife, a group of fanatical shepherds, assorted livestock, an angel explaining that my son was the everlasting Father, and the entire heavenly host, the arrival of three Thomson Holiday representatives, in fancy dress, did little to help. And, by the way, they could have left something slightly more practical! Your very truly, Josephus. (The above is based on a radio programme by Alan Titchmarsh some years ago)

NEWS FROM THE PCC

Building Work. What do you think of the reordering at the back of the church? What a difference it has made to our socialising area. It still needs finalising, decorating, carpeting etc but hey! What a start. The tower is completed, stonework on the South wall to be completed and the windows go in before mid-December. Work on the West entrance is to begin in January.

Car Park. Plans are being drawn up for the new car park on the North side of the church and the associated works (eg drains) to enable work to start.

Constable Poles. As a result of the reordering at the back of church, the two constable poles will need to be relocated. It has been suggested that they be restored and displayed in our new reception area. What do you think?

Finance. As we reported in the last issue our finances are at present in good health. We were able to claim £2,034 in gift aid for the months of September and October.

Christmas Leaflet Drop. Following the success of our leaflet drop about the Summer Fair, we repeated the process for our Christmas events. Volunteers went out in November to take and distribute the leaflets along Leeds Road.

Social and Funding Events. The Christmas Charity Fayre is taking place on Saturday 1 December. Our usual stalls will be there together with several local charity stalls. There will be a Burn’s Supper on 25 January and wine tasting in March.

Health and Safety. Our new Health and Safety officer, Alastair Maclean has highlighted a few Health and Safety shortcomings in the church which are being addressed.

Electoral Roll. In accordance with the C of E rules, the Electoral Roll will need complete renewal, so more forms to fill in early in the new year. More information later.

Choir Robes. We have ordered new robes for the choir having received a grant from the Bishop’s Trust together with fund raising by the choir. A progress report is found on Page 13.

Choir report We have received funding from the Bishop’s Fund towards new/replacement choir robes and these have now been ordered. The choir themselves are working on fundraising ideas, mainly concerts, to secure additional funding. The following extract is from our Choral Director, Richard Quarmby’s latest report to the PCC: 1. A design for the embroidery has been completed and sent to

F&M church supplies in order that the embroidery can be completed once the cassocks have arrived.

2. Fund Raising: Three events have been planned between now and June 2019:

a) Sponsored Songs of Praise – March 2019. Sponsors for hymns to be requested.

b) Joint concert with Huddersfield Voices on April 7th. Programme Mozart Vespers, Vivaldi Gloria, Mendelssohn Hear my prayer. Tickets £10, proceeds to be shared between HPC and Huddersfield Voices.

c) Joint concert in June with Emley Band – details to be confirmed in due course.

3. Armed Man performance. This was held on Sunday 18th November, with an appreciative audience including the Mayor of Kirklees as part of the Armistice 100 Commemoration. It was particularly poignant that the candle marking the 100th anniversary of WW1 was finally extinguished at the end of the concert. Musically the concert was very well received by audience and singers, and we are grateful to visiting singers who came to swell the ranks of the church choir, and to Saul who played the organ magnificently. It was also good to have percussion, oboe and trumpet music drawn from within the choir, alongside vocal soloists. Financially the concert raised in the order of £70. All in all this has been a successful event with lots of favourable comments, and will hopefully serve to help raise the profile of music in the church, and of the church choir within the Huddersfield community.

Snippets from Margaret

Yesterday is in the past, tomorrow far away Use whatever time you have

And that means act today Forget past faults and failure

Lay future cares to rest Do what you have to do today

And do your level best. *******

Truth is heavy, few therefore can bear it. (Hebrew Proverb)

******* FACTS OF LIFE “Mummy, where do I come from?” The little girl asked one day on returning from school. Taking this as a golden opportunity, the young mother proceeded to explain the facts of life to her daughter. After some time and some strange faces from the little girl, she pipes up: “Thanks mummy, I wanted to know because there is a new girl in our class and she says she comes from Edinburgh.”

******* HOLIDAYS The word holiday comes from Holy Day. In the past, people did not have time off as we do now, instead they didn’t have to work on special Holy Days like Easter, Christmas and Saints’ days. Each Holy Day started with a special service in church. These Holy Days were spread throughout the year. Most were only a single day to celebrate a particular Saint, but the Christmas Holy Days were 12 days long. Altogether the Holy Days added up to eight weeks, which is longer than most people get for their holidays now, although people then probably didn’t have weekends off.

******* A PERFECT GIFT A hug is a perfect gift

One size fits all And nobody minds if you exchange it.

Philip Clements-Jewery preached a sermon at Huddersfield Parish Church in October, appealing for chaplains volunteers, lay or ordained, to join in this work. Philip writes about his work as a chaplain in Huddersfield town centre:

When you go shopping, I wonder if you ever give a thought to the people who serve you and the conditions under which they work. Many shop workers work long hours for low pay and are often on their feet for the whole day. I have come across some who work shifts as long as 14 hours. Think what that might mean for their time with their families.

The Huddersfield Workplace Chaplaincy, under the auspices of Churches Together in Huddersfield Town Centre, serves to offer support to people who work in the shops and businesses in the town centre. It is made up of an ecumenical team of 7 or 8 people - ministers and lay-people from the Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, United Reformed and Black Churches. Each of us has our own patch.

Mine is New Street from one end to the other. Although I don't visit all the shops on my patch, nevertheless I support shop workers in about 65 premises on a 4 or 5 week rota. Essentially, this is a pastoral ministry of care for people. It is not overtly evangelistic, although of course we do seize opportunities to share faith when they arise. Interestingly, this can more often and more easily happen with Moslems, like the woman who once asked me why God allows bad things to happen to good people. She was in a bad way at that time, but recently I met her again and reminded her of our last conversation. I asked how she was and was pleased to learn that she was in a much better place.

Workplace chaplaincy is very much a ministry of building relationships. This can take a long time. Sometimes, people who apparently don't want anything to do with me at first over a period of patient visiting will soften and become quite open and talkative. Others will almost immediately show their pleasure at coming across someone who cares about what they do when I explain to them why I am there.

One thing I especially value about the work of retail chaplaincy is the opportunity for an hour or so a week to engage with people who for the most part do not attend church! There are, as I've said, people of other faiths, and some who would see themselves as being 'spiritual', like the man who likes to go and sit in the Parish Church for a few minutes before starting work. But I do find it refreshing to spend time with such people and often return home buzzing.

The other thing about this work is that it has taken me into places where at first I was out of my comfort zone - places like betting shops and casinos. Even so, I have had some of my best conversations with people behind the counter in such places as they have shared with me their problems and family issues. I have also talked with them about their duty of care to customers who are difficult or who might display symptoms of addiction to gambling. Recent government proposals to change the conditions of use for Fixed Odds Betting Terminals will go far to help address this problem.

Although not directly the purpose of the chaplaincy it is impossible not to come across beggars and rough sleepers in the town centre. I sometimes try to engage with them, and offer them a meal voucher for the Cafe at the Methodist Mission in Lord Street. If you feel you want to help these people and hesitate to give them money, then vouchers are available (3 for £10) from reception at the Mission.

Recently, the chaplaincy team has suffered some losses with members retiring or moving away, and there is a need to recruit new people. As I have said, this is a ministry not only for ordained people but for lay church members too, both women and men. All that is required is an interest in other people and the lives they live and an ability to engage with them. If you feel that this is something that you could offer please ask me about it. Perhaps you will find it as rewarding as I do.

A Grandchild’s Hand

The promise for tomorrow

And the hopes of dreams come true

A reminder of the childhood

That is still a part of you

The wonder of a miracle

From which this love began

There is so much found in a touch

Of a Grandchild’s hand

This was given to Sandra on her recent birthday by our Great Grandson Harvey, aged 5, with help from school.
