FROM THE EDITOR

I recently read that about 40

churches are trialling the use of

contactless card machines and, if

successful, to be rolled out to

more churches later. These are

placed at the back of church for

donors to simply tap their

contactless card to make a

donation. This sounds like a good

idea for visitors to the church and would cut down the use of cash

as we seem to be heading for a cashless society.

Some churches are even trialling hand held devices to pass around

the pews during services. I wonder how this would work. Do you

type in your intended donation, then tap the card, then wait for

that little slip of a receipt? I can imagine the fuss as the machine

reaches each person. The search for the card in the handbag/

wallet, the decision making, the help needed from an offspring, the

wait for the receipt (assuming the paper hasn’t run out) and the

impatient foot tapping of the collector as he keeps losing the

machine. It would be easier to have the cash handy!

Now, there’s a lot happening in these two months not least of

which is the period of Lent leading up to Easter Sunday on the 1st

of April. You will find information on pages 7 and 17. There is also

Pancake Tuesday, Valentine’s Day, Mothering Sunday, a Parish

walk in March and even a photograph competition with a £100

prize fund and the winning entries will be used to produce the

church postcards (Page 11).

Check out the church diary in the centre pages.

Simon Says It says in the dictionary that the word preparation means: “The act or process of preparing, the state of being prepared: readiness." If I remember in school during home economics, all our recipes began with 'preparation', and all we ever wrote was 'hands, hair, equipment'. In other words, wash hands, tied back hair (if long) and get out equipment. I remember clearly such preparation, once drilled in it becomes as second nature. I still try and collect the tools I need for a job. However, I always seem to forget something, a certain screwdriver or saw etc. Is it a school's job to prepare children for life? I suppose in some ways this has to be true, especially when you think how long children spend in school. But then, I think back to theological college. We didn't expect to go into parishes as fully fledged vicars. We were just given the tools for part of our role and were to continue a preparation in our curacy. Then again, part of our training in our first parishes, and in college, was I suppose real preparation in the sense that we were not necessarily the finished article, but equipped with partial readiness. Then, I suppose, another preparation is recognising that God is with us. This means that whatever the situation that we meet on

Page 6: Network Magazine - WordPress.com · 2/2/2018  · 4. Photos will be judged in 3 categories: Classic interior, Classic exterior, Creative/Contemporary. 5. Each image entered should

6

a day-to-day basis, God is there, even for a green vicar, meaning we will get through whatever is thrown at us. The preparation of God's presence must be worth more than 1000 years in college. Lent is about preparation. Some people will give up things, others will take on things, still others use the time as a learning process. Are you prepared for Lent, which in itself is preparation for Holy Week and Easter? Do you need such preparation? A question you need to think about as Lent draws closer. Are you prepared for God, readiness for his love and grace? I suppose that when you have such acceptance, you quickly move on to look at the consequences and therefore, how you live. Preparation, does not mean you can sit on your laurels but rather calls us to action and learning. Indeed, are you prepared for the end of this life? Are you ready to meet your maker? My answer would be not just yet! Preparation means we are to think about such a questions now. You see, preparation is not about the future but about the present; the here and now. Preparation should be immediate, and perhaps even urgent. Perhaps we may have such a Lent this year. Readiness! Simon

How are we to mark our observance of Lent in 2017? Perhaps we can see a Holy Lent as taking on a task by which we may learn a little, question ourselves, pray some and prepare for Holy Week and Easter.

What is it that we do differently in the season of Lent? Our aim should be to take to heart the call to repentance and acceptance of forgiveness. The outcome? We should grow in faith and love of God.

This year's Lent observance is presented as a wide range of resources that can be used on your own or within a group of friends. It is hoped that people will be tempted to dip their toes into reading, watching, listening, doing & therefore meditating on God.

PRAYER

A short daily prayer is available for use during Lent as a separate sheet or in the ‘daily thought’ booklet. These resources may be just the start of a conversation by which you may be inspired to use some of the other resources available.

As part of the daily prayer you may use the prayer below a prayer that places at the centre of Lent the growth of the faith, in St. Peter’s and at the heart of individuals of faith.

O God who alone brings growth to your Church, Send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, Wisdom to our actions and power to our witness. Help our church to grow in numbers, commitment to you, And in service to our local community, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Further, as an offering of prayer, each Tuesday evening during Lent there will be a pilgrimage to join the Community of the Resurrection for ‘Compline’ - 9.15pm. This simple form of prayer and journey to another community is a significant ‘action’ for our Lenten experience.

You can offer them a cup of coffee and a biscuit if the kitchen is open. Postcards. See Page 11. Also note that we are expecting to hold a Christmas Card competition in October/November 2018; photographers may wish to take photos in preparation for this. Building Work. Simon C’s Spot

One phrase struck me particularly over the Christmas period, and I can’t remember where I read it. But, it said, “As Christians we are very good at being compassionate, but we tend to ignore justice.” There’s a lot of truth in this. For example, we might make someone who is homeless a cup of tea, but what do we do about the social and health systems that make the problems. We pray for people in war. But do we make sure that our pensions and insurance companies don’t invest in the arms trade? We pray for people who are starving, malnourished and without access to water. We pray for people who cannot afford to send their own children to school. And yet we buy things knowing that many of those who grew them and made them are treated unfairly, paid an unfair wage, and are trapped in that situation. Some even are children. We might buy a child we know a toy, or an outfit, or a meal to show our love; whilst that very purchase is blighting the life of another child. We hear rumours about certain shops and brands, but we still use them, because the price is better, or because we like them. We say that it is only those weird activists and campaigners making a fuss. We are very good at being compassionate, but we tend to ignore justice. What shall we do about it?

Another Yorkshire Joke John Willie was supposed to have a slate loose, but where money was concerned he usually finished up on the right side. Once when a chap had been trying to take a rise out of him, he coolly remarked: “Does tha know Joe, Ah can make sixpence into a shilling.” “Get away wi’ thi,” said Joe “Ah don’t believe thi.” “Ah can. Thee lend me sixpence an’ Ah’ll show thi.” The sixpence was handed over and John Willie went into a nearby butcher’s shop. Returning a moment or two later with a pork pie, he handed threepence change over to Joe. “Hey!” shouted Joe, “what’s tha tryin’ on? This isn’t a shilling.” “Ah nivver said it wor, but Ah’ve made that sixpence into a shilling, all the same.” “How’s tha mean?” “Well,” said John Willie, “Ah’ll tell thi. Tha sees this pie. Nah that’s threepence, isn’t it? And tha’s got threepence. And t’butcher’s got sixpence hasn’t he? Nah just thee reckon it up.”

SUCCESS

Success is speaking words of praise, In cheering other people’s ways, In doing just the best you can,

With every task and every plan.

It’s silence when your speech would hurt, Politeness when your neighbour’s curt. It’s deafness when the scandal flows,

And sympathy with others’ woes

It’s loyalty when duty calls, It’s courage when disaster falls,

It’s patience when the hours are long, It’s found in laughter and in song.

It’s in the silent time of prayer, In happiness and in despair, In all of life and nothing less,

We find the thing we call success. Thanks Sheila

Sandra spotted this paragraph in a Jodi Picoult book: In Heaven and Hell people sit at banquet tables filled with amazing food, but no one can bend their elbows. In Hell, everyone starves because they can’t feed themselves. In Heaven, everyone’s stuffed, because they don’t have to bend their arms to feed each other.

Little girl: “Mummy, who made Grandma?” Mummy: “Why God did, of course.” Little girl: “Mummy, who made you?” Mummy: “God did.” Little girl: “Who made me?” Mummy: “God did.” Little girl: “He’s getting better and better all the time, isn’t he?”

Why God made mums These were the answers given by some seven year-olds... Why did God make mothers? 1. She's the only one who knows all the passwords we use

online. 2. Mostly to clean the house, I think. 3. To help us out of there when we were getting born. Why did God give you to your mother, and not to some other mum? 1. We're related. 2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other kids’ mums like

me. 3. Other mums wouldn’t understand about me being afraid in

the dark. What kind of little girl was your mum? 1. My mum has always been my mum and none of that other

stuff. 2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be

pretty bossy. 3. They say she used to be nice. Why did your mum marry your dad? 1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mum

eats a lot. 2. She got too old to do anything else with him. 3. My grandma says that no one will ever know. What's the difference between mums & dads? 1. Mums work at work and work at home and dads just go to

work at work. 2. Mums know how to talk to teachers without scaring them. 3. Dads are taller and stronger, but they panic when the

dishwasher overflows.

St Peter’s Church: Maintenance and Mission

Almost fifteen years ago, during Catherine Ogle’s incumbency, a great deal of thought and prayer developed into the “Cornerstone Project” which was launched in 2004. Following comments from a fundraising consultant, the project was altered to ensure the building was conserved, rather than lots of money spent developing just part of the building. Perhaps the church and the Spirit were not quite on the same hymn sheet at that time! However, following this change of plan, Arthur Nightingale was instrumental in successfully bidding for grants amounting to around £700k from various sources, also using our own monies from the compulsory purchase of the old Venn Street School (totalling £500k), between 2007 and 2013, which allowed us to strengthen the balconies, repair and restore the roof and ceiling, repair some of the worst affected stonework on the tower, repairs to the north wall stonework, glazing repairs and work to the vestries. Windows were put into the crypt and drain repairs and a roof alarm system were put in place. The success of this is evident for all to see and I think if we look we see the work of the Spirit in this project. The third phase of work is current, again we have had HLF support and support from other grant bodies, signs that we are moving with the Spirit still. Our Second Phase application has been sent to the HLF for consideration. We have had a quote for the completion of the project which is higher than our initial estimates (no surprise there!) and we expect HLF to discuss this with us. As a church we may need to increase our own fundraising and we will be applying to additional grant bodies for their support. Watch this space, but prayers for a successful outcome would be helpful. The other aspect of our development is the improvement to the Narthex at the back of church, the reopening of an entrance where the current kitchen is and the major reordering of our area in the crypt including the provision of more space for our use and the use of others, the provision of a new kitchen (to replace the current inadequate one) and the re-siting of our office which will be more accessible too. There is to be a provision for hard car parking to the north of the building. Through our architect we had discussions with Heritage England and the Town planning officer

Pew Runners. As you will have noticed, most if not all of our new pew runners have been delivered and are now installed. Thanks to our fund raisers, the ‘Pew Runners’ and others, we now have much more comfortable seating in church. The colour gold was chosen by the majority of the PCC to go with the colour dark red, chosen for the carpet (a future project). Each runner is reversible and the covers are washable.

regarding the plans. After some alterations the plans went before the Kirklees Planning Committee and were passed without further change or objection. This is surely more evidence that we are working with the Spirit in terms of this project and its relevance to the mission of the church. The funding of this project should come from the sale of the church car park on Venn Street. Interestingly, the PCC were concerned about this as an investment, but its value to the developers makes it a useful resource to the church to provide capital funds. Again, we can see the work of the Spirit in this and we hope the deal will go through in the next year or so. We shall be applying for a Faculty to enable us to carry out the remaining conservation work and the changes at the back of church by the end of January. The plans for all the works that are to be carried out will be displayed in church from early February (hopefully at the Coffee Gathering) and I would ask everyone to have a look at them, ask questions and get behind the PCC and building group and support them going forward. This is a huge undertaking but we feel the church will reap enormous benefits in terms of it’s mission, openness and accessibility for all. Mike Bembridge, Churchwarden.
