Most of us credit Galileo with the invention of the telescope, but it had actually been invented a year earlier in Holland. Galileo improved on that device by increasing it to 8 times magnification. It turns out Galileo was an obscure math professor looking for a salary hike to support his numerous illegitimate children. He beat out the Dutch, selling his telescope to the Senate of Venice as a spy glass to protect their ships at sea.

But with that first telescope Galileo went on to search the stars and to propose, along with Copernicus, the outrageous notion that the earth was not the centre of the universe! We’ve been looking out ever since.

In this issue of Network we want to take an outward look. We feature an interview with Murray Cornelius, the director of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada’s International Missions efforts. His outward focus will inspire you.

Murray will be our guest Thanksgiving Weekend. We include an update on our investment at the Village of Hope, Zimbabwe with Elizabeth and Gaye Norrie.

We take another look out, but a little closer to home with some information about our efforts to support the less fortunate in Cambridge through our Food Drive in aid of the Cambridge Self-Help Foodbank. And looking out just beyond our ceiling, (I suppose, this is a stretch!) we contemplate our roof situation right here at Calvary.

It all starts at home, I guess, but it doesn’t end there. Every church needs to be outward bound!

“When God has a plan He starts with a child.” Think of Moses, Samuel, Joseph, David and even Jesus. While others just saw a baby in danger, a small child serving in the tabernacle, a spoiled sibling, a lowly shepherd boy or an ordinary baby born in poverty, God saw a man who would deliver 3 million people from slavery, a great prophet, a mighty ruler, a king and the Savior of the world.

When people come to visit us here at the Village of Hope Zimbabwe they may only see 70 orphaned and/or abandoned children in our homes and another 250 disadvantaged children attending our schools along with about 325 other students but God may be seeing an accountant, a lawyer, a

doctor, an advocate against injustice, a nurse, a diplomat, a Christian statesman, a teacher, a pastor. . .

When God has a plan He starts with a child. We don’t presume to know what that plan is but we do know He has a specific plan for each child and we at the Village of Hope are here to help that dream/plan become a reality.

Gaye and Elizabeth Norrie (Gloria Aide’s sister) serve the Village of Hope in Harare, Zimbabwe. Calvary supports the Village with $10,000 a year

‘Kepler’ is a space telescope that searches Sun-like stars for planets. Its major goal is to determine the fraction of Sun-like stars that have planets like Earth. Kepler’s science team has determined that 1.4% to 2.7% of stars like the Sun are expected to have planets similar to Earth. Of course, pondering what that means is the next step. But it does give us something to wonder about!

It’s part of human nature to look out… to look beyond ourselves. And it’s an axiom of church health that positive, growing churches are about looking out.

Murray Cornelius’ job is to help churches look beyond themselves to the world that needs their engagement. Murray is the man in charge of International Missions for the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC).

Outward looking churches are living in exciting times. “We are living in an era, without question, experiencing the greatest harvest of souls that the world has ever seen!” says Cornelius. Just give him a chance and he’ll rattle off the kinds of earthshaking developments taking place in the Islamic world, in Buddhist-Hindu nations, and in the atheist-materialist world of former- and still-Communist countries. “It’s not a day to sleep!”

But things aren’t simply rosey everywhere. The church has never been as persecuted as it is today. There are more martyrs today than ever before. “We shouldn’t be surprised,” Cornelius points out. “Jesus said it would be this way. With increased harvest comes increased martyrdom and cost.” It’s a matter of prayer we should all shoulder.

The PAOC is at the forefront of world developments. At least 275 workers serve in 52 countries, spanning Africa, Eurasia, Latin America and Southeast Asia.  Nineteen per cent  of our workers serve in Restricted Access nations or in places  closed to the open preaching of the gospel. Another  18 per cent  work in the 10/40 window, that part of the world with the largest non-Christian population.

Cornelius has helped the PAOC sharpen its focus by defining four major emphases: reaching (frontline

evangelism); planting (starting new churches): equipping (training leaders); and caring (mobilizing justice intiatives). More than 3,000 students in affiliated Bible colleges and 15,000 students in extension programs are being trained to be the next generation of leaders that will make a lasting impact on their nations.

Through ERDO (Emergency Relief and Development Overseas), the PAOC’s humanitarian arm, more than 15 ministry centres with children’s homes provide refuge for young lives. Over 6,000 children are sponsored, and there are water well projects in six countries. Millions of people in crisis are fed and cared for.

It’s a big operation. With all agencies accounted for, it takes over $25 million dollars a year to keep the machine humming. But Murray Cornelius has a larger vision than that. “If every adult in a PAOC church gave a dollar a day to World Missions, we would more than double our current investment,” he dreams. Imagine what we could do!

It’s a great dream, looking out from here. Looking beyond our church to the world that Jesus called us to. Like the Kepler telescope, it takes a visionary to see beyond what is, to what could be. Murray Cornelius is that kind of visionary. And, like Kepler, when he shares what he sees, it not only gives us something to wonder about, but possibilities on which to act!

Murray Cornelius is the Assistant Superintendent for International Missions for the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Murray was raised in Africa, and fills the post that his dad, Bill filled back in the 80’s. Murray will also be David’s new boss, so be nice to him when he visits Calvary on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 13.

our church to the world that Jesus called us to. Like the Kepler telescope, it takes a visionary

to see beyond what is, to what could be.

“Oh, come on! It’s got to be the easiest thing to raise money for!!! People give to vision! People give to need!”

“Yeah, I could understand if you were raising money for starving kids, or girls caught in the sex trade. But this? It’s a cinch. How could people not give?”

The conversation went on… and on… It was pretty obvious. We had a winner.

“David, trust me when I say this, people will give when we tell them we’re raising money for…”

For what? For toilet paper? I could see the headline in next month’s Network now. “Toilet bowl budget liquidated to build roof. Give to the toilet paper fund now!”

No, we’re raising money for the roof.

But this was the transcript of one of the intense discussions we had around the board table as we discussed how we were going to raise money for the roof! OK, no, it wasn’t, but I want to communicate the urgency we were feeling so I took a little (a lot?) of creative license.

We must repair the roof over the gym. It hasn’t been fixed since before I was pastor here. That’s pushing twenty years! We’ve pared back the cost to the bare minimum, and that’s $110,000. Back in the spring we aimed for $130 000 on the roof, but there are some things that can be put off, the gym

roof itself can’t. We need to do it.

So short of rationing TP, I’m doing the next most drastic thing. I’m appealing to you!

Are there cheaper approaches. Perhaps. To quote author Jarod Kitz, “As long as you are wearing a hat made out of shingles, you’ll always have a roof over your head.” We could provide hats, but really, how practical is that.

The good news is that this spring we raised $55,000  and that money is designated for the roof repair. More good news. We normally take up a special offering celebrating Calvary’s Anniversary each October. Usually we try to make the Anniversary Offering outward focussed. This is our 93rd Anniversary. Not red-letter, but still a great occasion to take up an offering for our roof! –and let’s face it, that’s pretty outward focussed!

All kidding aside now. In my closing months of ministry here at Calvary, nothing would make me happier than to see this roof thing cared for. I would be so pleased to know that a new in-coming pastor wouldn’t have to care for this item in addition to all the other challenges and opportunities he or she will face! This fall if we could all dig a little deeper, and pull out enough to put this roof thing behind us, or under us, or whatever is appropriate for a roof… perhaps above us!... We may not have the most compelling item to motivate giving, but if this doesn’t work, stay tuned for Calvary’s Toilet Paper Fund in the near future!

Give to Vision! Give to Need! Give to...

Only a few months after we said goodbye to youth intern Adam Goudreault, the 23-year-old has returned to Calvary to fill some big shoes.

Goudreault, known for being loud in his love of Christ, has accepted an interim position as youth pastor, replacing Jamie Nelson who recently took on a leadership role at a church in northern Ontario.

“I am excited to be once again working alongside Calvary’s staff and to be ministering to the youth. I had such a blast during my internship. I also couldn’t have asked for a better youth pastor to precede me. Jamie has an absolutely amazing infrastructure of youth leaders established and that is no small task to set up. “

Recognizing that Calvary is in the midst of staffing changes with Jamie leaving and then David, who is leaving in the New Year, Goudreault says he won’t be making too many changes to the Fuel youth program.

“This is a time of change for the church, and with our students adapting to school life I am hoping to provide some stability. That being said, I do plan on evaluating the programs already implemented to see if we can make them even better.”

One change brought in before Goudreault arrived back at Calvary is the wider age range of students that can attend the youth program. Up until this September, Fuel was for students in grades 9 to 12. Now the program allows students in grades 7 and 8 to attend.

“I think it was a great move to bring the junior and senior high groups together. The reality is most of the media available to Grade 12s, largely secular in nature, is available to Grade 7s. The junior groups will benefit from the example set by older students in their approach to worship, surviving school, and even handling theological issues. And the older students are going to learn the importance of ministering to others through interactions with the younger students.”

Goudreault also wants to address those who may

be concerned that the older students will be missing out at Fuel because of the curriculum being “watered down” for younger students.

“It’s always been my experience that older students are never satisfied with simplified versions of the answers they’re looking for. In fact, in my experience, younger students will almost always rise to the occasion of tackling more challenging material and subjects, and are eager to grow spiritually under the right conditions. It’s one of my biggest concerns to make sure that our younger students are given every opportunity to grow, and when we raise the bar, it’s exciting to see what can happen!”

So what can youth expect from Fuel this year? Retreats, events, and small groups, says Goudreault.

Becoming a Christ follower

Before becoming a youth pastor at Calvary Goudreault says his faith journey began when he was about four years old. However, it was sometime during his preteen years “when my faith had to become my own.”

“I chose to continue to pursue Christ not because I was raised in a Christian home but because I wanted to grow spiritually. This ultimately led to my growing passion for Christ and eventually landed me at Master’s College and Seminary.”

Goudreault describes growing up in a loud and loving family. “I have two brothers and four sisters, biological parents and awesome step-parents. It’s a lot of names so if you are curious, come ask me sometime.”

In his spare time, Goudreault says he can be found performing with his band Beacon. Band members include Goudreault’s twin brother as well as some of his closest friends.

“We love using our musical creativity to bring

God’s love into places where it can be hard to find. One of my dreams is to see Beacon sharing stages with mainstream artists like Billy Talent, Katy Perry, and other social leaders who need God’s touch on their lives.”

Song writing isn’t the only thing the youth pastor writes, admitting that one of his hobbies is writing fiction. “I’m working on a fantasy novel right now and it should be out in about 2,000 years! But seriously, it would be surreal to have a book on a Cole’s bookshelf somewhere.”

But more important than writing is Goudreault’s continually adapting goal—growing awareness of God’s life-changing love in young people and families.

“I believe God is just as able and eager to change the lives of hurting students as He has ever been, and I want to be an instrument to that in whatever way possible.”

When asked what his favourite scripture is, Goudreault says Ezra 7:10. For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel. “This verse always reminds me that before I preach anything to anyone, I need to have first studied it in God’s Word, and then carry it out in my own life.”
