3 Dependencies of Network Updater

3.1 Supported Operating Systems Network Updater Release 3.20.19 does not support Red Hat Linux v9 or Enterprise Linux v3, which are both out-of-date according to Red Hat's own documentation. Although nothing direct prevents their use, this release is not tested for use with these OSs, and customer support will not be able to provide support to customers who are using one of these out-of-date operating systems.

Release 3.20.19 expressly supports

Windows Platforms (32-bit OS)

− Windows 2000

− Windows Server 2003

− Windows XP or XP Professional

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (32-Bit OS)

− Version 4

− Version 5

This release may successfully function on 64-bit versions of these OSs, but has not been tested on them and, consequently, is not supported on them.

3.2 Required Ports Release 3.20.19 requires the following ports to be open on the host device:

ftp, Ports 20 (active) and 21 (active and passive) in TCP

tftp, Port 69 in UDP

telnet, Port 23 in TCP

http, Port 80 in TCP

snmp, Port 161 in UDP

for enabling/disabling SM autoupdate, Port 2501 in UDP

3.3 Java Runtime Environment Since the external tools in Release 3.20.19 require that JRE Version 1.5 or later is running on the host machine, the installation tool for this release loads a proper version of JRE.

4 Network Updater Software Installation The Network Updater Release 3.20.19 installation tool successfully runs without preconditions on either a machine without Network Updater or a machine that has a previous version of it installed.

4.1 General Installation Information The Network Updater Release 3.20.19 installation is a single-file Install Anywhere process. The installation file can be downloaded from http://motorola.wirelessbroadbandsupport.com/software/. The operator downloads either the Windows version (.exe) or the Red Hat Linux version (.bin) of the installer. When the operator double-clicks on the installation file, the wizard assists the operator through the installation. Release 3.20.19 automatically detects whether a previous release of Network Updater is already installed and, if it detects one, prompts the operator to upgrade the Network Updater installation on their computer. This is the recommended installation practice, because the tool in this case automatically imports existing preferences and external tools that were associated with the previous release of Network Updater into the Release 3.20.19 installation.

note .............Operators who are still running CNUT 1.0 should uninstall it before installing Network Updater Release 3.20.19.

Full details about Release 3.20.19 installation are provided in the section titled "Installation" in Network Updater (CNUT) Release 3.20.19 On-line Help.

4.2 Launching Installation or Upgrade on Windows To run the installation on any supported Windows platform, download the file setupCNUT_3_20_19.exe to your local computer and double-click on the file name to execute it.

4.3 Launching Installation or Upgrade on Red Hat Linux To run the installation on any supported Linux platform, download the file setupCNUT_3_20_19.bin. Before running the installer in Linux, change the permissions on the downloaded setup file by executing the following command: chmod +x setupCNUT_3_20_19.bin Then, to run the installer, execute the following command:

setupCNUT_3_20_19.bin –i console

5 Issues in Network Updater Operation

5.1 Issues Resolved With This Software Release The following issues are resolved in Network Updater Release 3.20.19:

Issue Description of Resolved Issue Item ID

The Gather SM Passwords and Extract IP Address and SNMP Settings option does not work.

The Gather SM Passwords and Extract IP Address and SNMP Settings option specifies whether the Network Updater should automatically attempt to discover SM IP addresses and SNMP community string information for SNMP v1 and v2c SMs. However, it does not work for v3 SMs.

0016317

The launch script for the application in Linux requires a dos2unix conversion.

This is no longer required.

It continues to require that you be logged in as root or execute the launcher as a superuser.

5.2 Issues Acknowledged With This Software Release The following issues are acknowledged in Network Updater Release 3.20.19:

Issue Description of Acknowledged Issue Item ID

The Create New Folder option is unavailable for saving a network archive file.

As a result of a known issue in Java 1.4 through 1.6 (Bug #4847375), the Create New Folder button in the Windows Save dialog is grayed out ( )

◦ while Save In is set to My Documents.

◦ when Save In has been set to My Documents and then changed to Desktop.

0009787

The encryption type not available from certain SMs.

Network Updater relies on the link table in the radio to display the encryption type of the radio. Certain SMs (for example, those that operate on System Release 9.0) do not include this as a field in their link tables. The workaround for this problem is to upgrade the system release in these radios to the current release.

However, there is no risk that Network Updater would upgrade such a radio with the wrong encryption package, because it correctly discovers the encryption type as it discovers the SM through its IP address.

0008122

Sometimes a page is absent from the customer support information that the support tool assembles.

The output of the Gather Customer Support Information Tool may omit a page of data that the design of this tool intended to include. Some of this data, including VLAN configuration and membership and the results of link tests, typically could be significant in support efforts.

Issue Description of Acknowledged Issue Item ID

If you move an SM out of its auto-detected tree branch, but not back into it.

This has been documented in the Network Updater On-Line Help file under "EditMove Selected Network Elements."

0002566

The maximized Network Updater GUI obscures the Windows task bar.

As a result of known issues in Java (Bug #4737788 and 4472411), the GUI overlays and hides the Windows task bar until the GUI is resized (restored) to its last previous size.

0002321

The Restore (resize) function sometimes does not work on the maximized state of the Network Updater GUI.

As a result of known issues in Java (Bug #4737788 and 4472411), the GUI sometimes cannot be restored to its last previous size from the maximized state. When this occurs, you may move the maximized window by a distance that is sufficient to allow manually resizing it.

5.3 Caveats That Apply to This Software Release The following caveats apply to, or continue to apply in, this release.

5.3.1 HTML Entity Symbols Problematic

Because of how Network Updater processes passwords, HTML entity symbols (special characters such as, but not limited to ~, !, and @, º, ª, á, é, í, ó, and ú) as characters in configured passwords typically prevent the associated user from logging into Network Updater. Although a particular symbol may not prevent log in, all operators are advised to ensure that none of passwords associated with users, even the root user, contain any of the entity symbols.

Similarly, the inclusion of these special characters in the values of the Site Name, Site Location, and Site Contact fields typically causes processing problems for Network Updater storage as XML data and should be avoided.

5.3.2 Semicolons Problematic in External Tools and Radios Passwords

Network Updater’s external tool interface uses a semicolon delimited list to pass input parameters to the external tools. One of the input parameters is the radio password. If a radio password contains a semicolon, and that element is selected to be manipulated by an external tool (either a customer supplied external tool or one of the tools included with the Network Updater installation), issues may be encountered in the proper processing of the tool and/or element. To work around this issue where External Tools usage is desired, the user should change the passwords on the network elements, such that they do not contain semicolons.
